Car passing with oncoming traffic on Terrebonne

  • The majority of drivers on Terrebonne are courteous and patient, but there are also quite a few who seem intent on passing cyclists at all costs - even when they are riding at the speed limit of 30 km/h. Of this latter group, most wait for a point where they can cross well over the centre line (which is legal) and give a good amount of clearance. There is, however, a significant minority of drivers who pass much closer and in some cases at less than the minimum 1 metre car/cyclist clearance.
As we've noted before, this suggests that many motorists do not like driving behind cyclists in the same lane even when the cyclist is travelling at the speed limit and thus not slowing them down.
Even when a car passes with the obligatory 1 metre separation, a cyclist on Terrebonne may also have parked cars on their right at a very close distance. I might be comfortable riding in a 1 metre gap between parked and passing cars, but many less experienced cyclists as well as kids and seniors may not be.
In this morning's BLR shoot, the black car passed us heading East on Terrebonne, shortly after the light at Grand. He gave a lot of clearance, but had to cut back into our lane and brake rapidly due to the oncoming car seen in the latter part of the video. It was close enough that the oncoming car honked at the overtaking driver.
It's important to note that, when the car passed, the cyclist was as far to the right as possible given the current Terrebonne configuration (with a row of parked cars on their right). There was also a thick pack of uncleared snow along the strip used by the parked cars, which would be difficult to ride onto from the road (there was a sharp ledge between the hard packed ice/snow and the dry road surface).
SAFETY NOTICE: Video footage is recorded by an experienced adult cyclist wearing a helmet and complying with applicable traffic laws. Some situations involve higher risk due to compromises and/or deficiencies in road design and motorist conduct. Always comply with all road safety laws and wear a helmet when cycling. If a situation is outside your comfort zone, consider briefly dismounting and walking on the sidewalk until conditions improve. Talk to your local elected officials about any safety concerns and what they can do to improve conditions for cyclists.

Anything to be stuck at the next red light 4 seconds quicker!!
It's an issue here in Germany too, where people know how to drive...
Dedicated bike lanes are the way, with actual space in between the road an them that is.
