      you show a lot of ignorance when living in a city of millions, bike lanes are for everyone either on foot, jogging, walking a dog or walking to school......You don't see me making a video when I see cyclist on the road with cars (btw stupidest idea ever) but hey I am respectful despite my views and treat others how i would wanna be treated.

    • @onecyclistinlisbon
      @onecyclistinlisbon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +736

      Do you like order? In Portugal bicycles can be fined if they use the sidewalk and what I do....I cycle where it's legal such as bike lanes and on the road. Pedestrians are fined if they walk on a bike lane. I like order and if all were able to follow the rules this video wasn't even made because there weren't reasons.

    • @5tyxx
      @5tyxx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Straight forward question how can they fine you while riding a bike on the sidewalk..... since bikes have no need for licensing therefore you do not need to carry I.D just ride away...unless you have a criminal record and your prints are on file they have no way to tell who you are to issue a ticket....same with pedestrians.

    • @onecyclistinlisbon
      @onecyclistinlisbon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +526

      Again, you are not Portuguese and you do not know our rules. I do have to carry an ID when I cycle and they don't need licensing. If they catch me without one I have to go the police station, especially if I get involved in an accident. Read more about my country before making all those assumptions.

    • @5tyxx
      @5tyxx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Dont need to be portuguese to know human behavior plain and simple......
      There are ignorant cyclist who ride where they want just as there are ignorant pedestrians who walk and jog where they want......no amount of you video taping and recording this will ever stop them....no laws will stop them......but if you just learn to live life and not worry what others are doing your life will be much better. they will be caught and they will face the fines one day for their behavior....relax ride your bike take in the scenery life will be much better

    • @jupitherdanach7643
      @jupitherdanach7643 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@elaine5504 I actually find it even more annoying than pedestrians walking on the right side. If there is someone walking in front of me and I cannot overtake in that moment, I can slow down. If the person is walking towards me, I actually have to stop (mostly resulting in the pedestrians then stepping into the other lane without looking, with oncoming traffic from behind them). I know this is the recommendation for walking on a road without sidewalk, but then it is assumed you would actually get out of the way if the oncoming car doesnt see you or due to traffic is not able to leave it's lane. Pedestrians walking on the left side of the bike lane do not get out of the way for a bike (at least in Valencia, Spain. Might be different elsewhere.)

    • @mettaursp309
      @mettaursp309 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jupitherdanach7643 Yeah, in my experience pedestrians on the oncoming side are far worse, especially when there are other pedestrians around. The people walking on the opposite side are usually alone in my experience, so you end up with people on both sides of the trail going the same direction, acting as a funnel for traffic in both directions which makes it far more dangerous for everyone.
      Those people also don't get out of the way because it seems like they just expect you to go around them anyways. What's the point of trying to travel in a way that makes it easier to get out of the way in advance if you're just not gonna get out of the way to begin with?

    In America, the bike lanes are painted on the road. So if you’re walking in a bike lane in America, you’re walking in the road. Which is weird. Especially because of how big our roads and sidewalks are, there isn’t really a good excuse for walking in the road because of how much space you’re already given. And it’s not as common to see people walking at all, at least where I live. Everyone’s driving. I actually feel less safe riding a bike or walking somewhere than I do driving a car. Because with cars, you have the power and you can do damage. But without a car, you’re powerless and vulnerable. It’s pretty different from where you are. I think I would rather live where you are.

    "sometimes I feel safe surrounded by cars..."
    My explanation:
    Even if you are right, you'll be wrong and judged by others. Thats because now you are not considered anymore the "weak" like you was when surrounded by cars (the strong ones)
    Example: Car (strong) - bike/motorcicle (weak)
    Bike (strong) - pedestrians (weak)
    So, now you are the one that needs to worry about them and be sorry even when you are completly right. Yep, I know, thats strange and crazy but thats how our society works, besides many other situations.
    Edit1: here in Brazil, for example, its completly normal to motorcicles run (and faster than majority vehicles) beetwen the lanes and switching lanes like crazies, even if the traffic is going well. Unfortunately, sometimes car owners just can't notice from where or when a motorcicle can sunddely appears and accidents happen. However, even being right, some will try to beat you or kick your rear view just because you are the big one (strong) compared to them (weak). So many people feel that you are the one that should worry while the other can just receive a free pass to do whatever they want. Thats completly wrong in my opnion because not just one side , but both should be listen and care of it other.
    A good example of it:

      @Beep the Sheep yes, the bell is like a car horn, it means get out of the way asshole, you're in the wrong lane. So when the pedestrians are going 6 wide and occupying the bike lane you should ring the bell and not dismount.

    This seems like a pretty universal problem in areas with designated Bike lanes. Its a nightmare in New York city whenever you are trying to ride your bike in central park with the amount of pedestrians in the bike lanes. And then whenever you swerve to avoid them or almost hit them, they always look at you like your the one in the wrong even though you literally just swerved to miss them in the middle of the fucking BIKE PATH!!

    Sim, Miguel, tens razão. Eu sou tolerante relativamente àquela malta que vai correr para as ciclovias - embora eu tenha a noção de que é perigoso, porque pode surgir um terceiro elemento ou imprevisto entre ambos na pior altura e provocar um acidente -, mas só até ao ponto em que os peões percebam que a prioridade nas ciclovias é dos ciclistas; isto já evoluiu para alguns acharem que nós é que temos de ter atenção a eles, desviarmo-nos deles, pararmos e tudo fazermos para eles agirem como bem entendem e para isso, não contem comigo. Ontem, por exemplo, quase provocaram dois acidentes em menos de 1 minuto. Primeiro, salta-me um a correr numa curva sem visibilidade, na ciclovia. Por uma questão de centésimos de segundo não ficávamos abraçados no chão. Menos de um minuto depois cruzo-me com outro vindo de frente que, circulando eu à direita, tendo parado de pedalar, tendo-me tornado visível e detectável por todos os meios há 100 metros atrás, não se desvia. Acaba por se desviar já à minha frente, tropeça no pino separador de sentidos na ciclovia (que também deve ter achado que devia desviar-se dele) e quase acaba em cima de mim. Isto para não mencionar que o único acidente que tive até hoje aconteceu numa ciclovia, patrocinado por um grupo de peões de costas para o trânsito; infelizmente, tenho de mencionar que o grupo vinha na conversa com...um ciclista!...holandês! Que achou tudo aquilo naturalíssimo.

    Great video, and I appreciate that you acknowledge the times when pedestrians are forced into your lane.
    I also don't think you saying you feel safer between cars is crazy. Cars have rules they are set to follow, therefore it is much more predictable in terms of what they will do. Granted there's always the few.
    While with peds, if you ring the bell often times they will jump, and rush to some side without even knowing where you're at, potentially causing a crash. Too often they move into your assumed path (I try my best to stick to the left when overtaking) forcing you to slow down, and /or veer into traffic. With time people will hopefully get more accustomed to the unspoken rules of bike paths, and cycling itself.

    in mass, just outside of boston, i have hit 13 people that have not looked and just walked out right into the middle of the bike lane about 2-3 feet in front of me, there are many close calls as well. cars also dont respect bicycles, i have been run off the road 4 times now, broke my left wrist twice cause of them. i have also been hit by many cars as people are just stupid. every time someone tries to sue me, i win. 4 tries, all without a lawyer in small claims, 4 wins. the magic of gopro footage.

      If you're hitting pedestrians with your bike then you're a menace. I'm sure that you don't see the irony about cyclists hitting pedestrians and it's not YOUR fault and if a car is too close t you when you're doing the exact thing that you complain about it's once again somebody else's fault.

    same problem in my homecountry, estonia (living and cycling in lisbon at the moment which is why someone introduced me to your channel), pedestrians just aren't used to bike lanes and think they can walk freely everywhere there's no cars. if a person doesn't cycle themself it probably even doesn't cross their mind to check if they are on a bike lane

    You are right, it's safer among cars. Since a car changes direction a lot slower, and usual the driver looks around before acting, because another car might him him. I don't feel safe on the sidewalk with pedestrians. And yes they always tend to walk on the cycle path. This gets solved when there will be more bicycles on the path, but until that time, it's very dangerous. Pedestrians can change direction without notice, or just touch the bicycle and you get broken bones.

    • @ElliotFlowers
      @ElliotFlowers 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I agree. A car can't stop dead and move two feet to the left at a moments notice. If the cycle lane is part of the road it's not really an issue. But the bike line in the video, that looks more like a pavement to me.

    • @pedrofskymtb
      @pedrofskymtb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah city planners and the council in all of Portuguese cities don't know SH*t about what they are doing. Look at the way they do the bike lanes.. ridiculous. There is not even a physical barrier between road and bike lane, so what cars do? Park their car on the bike lane, what does the police do? Nothing really. I see this every day in Porto bike lanes.

  • @AlmostBipedal
    @AlmostBipedal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I can sympathise. I was thrilled when a cycle lane was introduced on one of the many roads I commute on every day. Unfortunately, it's unusable due to the number of pedestrians blocking the way and conveniently not hearing requests to be allowed through.

    Young mountain biker here, I was once out goofing off on my hard tail on a old trail (this trail was fairly wide and not really used by bikers anymore) and a old man probs 70s no joke started shouting at me because “people walk on these paths and I should not be going so fast or even on a bike for that matter” now I get not many bikers use the trail anymore but it’s still a mountain bike trail yknow and I am always very careful because I also know people do like walking on that trail but most people are respectful and move to the side (I also brake quite a bit) but this old man not only watched me go down the full descent and not move an inch but he also watched as I struggled to brake in time to not crash (bumpy descent + hard tail = some pretty ruff braking since the rear just bounces at times) pedestrians can be so disrespectful

    I wouldn't call myself an avid cyclist, I only really ride on paths designated as mixture bike/pedestrian paths for exercise and recreation. However, my favorite path is marked with paint dividing the two halves of the pavement. In the US we drive on the right side of the road and typically respect the same rules when walking/cycling on a designated path. However, on a marked path like this, it completely puzzles me when people don't stick to the right side of the path. I get that often times your area of the path gets remarkably quiet with no other foot or cycle traffic around for a while, but you should always be alert for bicycle either coming from behind or in front and be ready to jig to the right if you're not allowing them any room to get by between you and your friend. Even when walking alone... don't walk directly down the middle! The cyclist has no clue which way you're going to move when you do notice them. And if you see a cyclist coming head-on, for god's sake move over well in advanced! The cyclist seriously shouldn't have to ring their bell at you! You see them, they see you, MOVE!!!
