I love my 23 F1.4. But looking at your photos with the 18mm, I completely unterstand why you are using it that much. Lovely pictures. Thank you for sharing.
I hear rumblings Viltrox has a pro line (f1.2) 50ish lens coming, could be a winner. The 18mm 1.4 looks great for tight spaces and capturing a wider eyes view. Lovely work Kevin. Whats your go to Shutter speed for bride walking down the aisle?
Great photos Kevin! I love the way you capture moments. In the last 6 months, I have used the following lenses most often with the XT4: for travelling, family, environmental portraits, close ups, low light Viltrox 27mm f1.2, XF 16mm f1.4, Xf 33mm f1.4, for traditional portraits Viltrox 75mm f1.2 and in confined spaces xf 50mm f2.0. For architecture and real estate, I use the Viltrox 13mm f1.4
Beautiful images, Kevin. I also added the 56mm II to my Fuji kit. It is a stellar performer. The compact 50mm f2 is also a wonderful lens. The Viltrox 27mm f1.2 & 75mm f1.2 lenses are also useful for wedding photography.
Great job Kev, I absolutely love the Fuji 56mm 1.2. I still have the mk1 version and it really is one of the finest portrait lenses out there. QQ which focussing mode do you find best at weddings? Do you use face detection at all? Or do you move the focussing area around manually?
As always, an interesting, informative, and entertaining video. I do street photography. That will color my lens preferences. I use the 23 & 35 f2 crons a lot. I started using the 90 when on the street with a two body two lens setup. I like the 56 but recently have been using the 90 more. Who knew? Recently purchased the 27 pancake. It makes the XE1 combo very small. I sometimes borrow the 18 when going to a demonstration or a parade. For me, the focal length is too wide. I don’t like I have to get closer to my subjects than I feel comfortable with. In addition, I have to be more aware of what is happening at the edge of the frame. Not my cup of tea. As an all rounder there is the 18-55 kit lens. Sharp. Fast at the wide end. Includes all the focal lengths I like and use. Plus it has the image stabilization so many XF lenses lack. Always, for me, a good choice. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Amazing photos Kevin, it was the best wedding pictures I have seen so far. I use Fujifilm xt3, after seeing this video Im considering to get the 18mm. Thanks a lot and Best regards from Nepal.
Interesting choices with good arguments and beautiful pictures to illustrate 😊. I have the 18, the 33 and the 56 (old), too. What about the 23mm f2 of X100VI in future? Or the Viltrox 75 1.2? I have both and am very happy with them.
Amazing images! I have several Fuji bodies and lenses, love the 56mm f1.2. I feel that without using a flash you get more depth and body to photos. I was curious to whether you shoot the B&W images with Acros or convert from color during editing?
I edit with my own presets now. However, I always have my cameras set to Acros so I can "see" in black and white. I have a video all about that on the channel too :-)
You take amazing wedding photos, it's clear you feel the subject, but i think you also have a street photography background, that eye for interesting moments. Amazing photos, you have a lifetime subscription to the channel.
Superbly presented 👌 most of your images are shot wide open at f1.2 or f1.4 giving your images character and depth! Do you think you’ll ever use your medium format gfx for weddings? You you think it’s over kill ?
Fantastic video. Just a thought but do yiu ever think about making the images in your video downloadable , as it would give people the chance to have a really good look at tte images if theu are thinking about spending on a certain lens
The 18mm is truly exceptional! Looking forward to investing in this lens later this year. The Viltrox 27 is also on my list 🙂 Thank you for this fantastic line-up of your favorite lenses, Kevin!
Lovely video and wonderful pictures 👍🏻 i live the 16f2.8 in 16x9 to have a filmic look, rarely used the old 18mm but love the new version, for me the 33mm feeled better on the tx4 then on the xt5, love the 50mm, snappy and agile, don't use rhe 56mm but the 90mm. The 35f3 and 23f3 are clean and reactive but with little character and i use them less.
Hi there, I going to be one of those with a kind of related question but kind of not! I’ve been asked to be a second shooter at a wedding, I’m no pro, a classic case of the couple likimg my photos, I’ve invested in a Viltrox 27mm, felt I needed a lens with a larger aperture and am on a right budget. There is the related part. The next part is my camera is an X-T3, which I really like and don’t have any plans to change. My question being, how did you get on with the X-T3 as a wedding camera? Pros and cons? How would you see it paired with the Viltrox? Do you have a video perhaps somewhere in the archives?
Wow Kevin SUBSCRIBED! Incredible wedding photos, you really have an eye for B&W, and when it really looks stunning. I used to shoot Pnatomic-X back in the day and loved it above all else! Anyway, I have an X-T4 with the 16-80mm kit lense and wanted to upgrade (I think to a prime). I mainly shoot landscape and desert towns and distressed subjects. I really don't care about bokeh, nor mind some vignetting. However, I like shooting maximum DoF and want really razor-sharp images, preferably with low distortion. You said something that really struck a chord with me: you said that you really didn't like the 33mm/50mm equivalent focal length. This has been really bothering me as well. My thought is, that I should go to a slightly wider (27-28mm/40mm equiv.) to be a little more panoramic; but I worry that I may miss the old 50mm FF look. The other issue, is that for me 50mm FF has always been a bit too much magnification, so I've always had to 'back-up' ro could take the shot as I wished. Also, I would like good low-light capability, not for bokeh but flexibility. I do want AF with high performance (for some video), but above all sharpness and clarity. I'm not too much worried about the money (within reason!) I would like to stay with Fuji (esp. the LM WR) but seems like the Viltrox is the only f1.2-ish lens. Anyway, sorry for the long comment Kevin--would appreciate your thoughts; these things never seem simple! Thank You!
23 is my favorite focal length, but it's not wide enough to be my widest lens. 🥲 I mostly use the 18 & 56, and I'll often bring the 30 macro with me too.
Great images as always Kevin. That 18mm does look excellent . I love my 56mm but it has to go into Fuji for repairs after my camera fell down during a shoot.. oops. Keep up the great work man
@@kevin_mullins You must be quick with that thumbstick! I need to set my X-T5 up like that and try it. Do you use backbutton focus on the rear wheel like you did on the X100F?
@@CityOfLakes612 I never use the joystick. Always use the central point with focus and recompose. I find it much quicker than moving the focus box around.
@@kevin_mullins oh that makes sense. Brilliant, really. Sorry, but I have one more question. For moving subjects are you using continuous tracking when you do that? Like a bride walking down the aisle.
Many thanks, Kevin. I know feeding the insatiable TH-cam beast is a pain in the butt, however I always appreciate your insights. Also, continued thanks to you and your personal assistant, Neale James, for the excellent Fujicast podcast. Cheers, James (from LA) P.S.: Just kidding, Neale.
I stopped shooting Fuji about 4 years ago, but every single thing I see about Fuji at the moment makes me so tempted to come back to them. I can't afford to, but I want to 😂
The Viltrox 27mm is beyond excellent. The crispness and tones… well-worth the money. The Sigma 30mm, while excellent in image quality, feels like a toy in comparison.
I think expression comes out much clearer in monochrome images. By a long way. But it's OK to not have the same thoughts. The world would be very boring if we all thought the same thing :-)
Don't mind me...just a full grown man getting emotional over here. Your ability to capture emotion through image is incredible man
:-)
I just put all my Sony gear up for sale. I’ll be getting the XT-5 and some of these lenses.
I love my 23 F1.4. But looking at your photos with the 18mm, I completely unterstand why you are using it that much. Lovely pictures. Thank you for sharing.
No problem. And Thank you for watching (and commenting).
Perfect, made a tea just in time for this new vid :D
Hope you enjoy it 🙂
After using several lenses, I've finally found my holy trinity:
XF 16mm F1.4.
XF 33mm F1.4.
Viltrox 75mm F1.2.
Very nice combos.
Exact same combo for me.🎉
Stunning imagery! I love m 35 1.4. The one I use most.
Good choice!
Gorgeous photos Kevin, full of emotion :)
Thanks, Lawrence.
Beautiful images.Thankyou for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
1:44 is that Frank Skinner?!?
Also - Minor point but you’ve got a typo in your description. XF56 is marked as XF65 right now.

Usually around 1/125 but it depends a little on the light.

That's very kind. Thanks.
Can I ask what you’re using for flash?
I have all the lenses you do except for the Viltrox. I prefer the Fuji 23 and I absolutely love the 33.
I don't use flash at all. I use a Lummimuse LED light for the dancing sometimes.

I have a GFX100S but won't use it for weddings. It's way too big and heavy and not quick enough for the way I work.
Your storytelling is absolutely f.....g stunning
Thank you. That's very kind.
I use the XF 18 mm F1.4 on my X-T4 too. Love the images captured with this lens.
Hi Kevin, more in a non-professional setting, any use for a manual focus lens?
Not really for me, tbh. I do have some old legacy MF lenses but haven't really used them.
33mm f/1.4 is the most magical lens in the Fuji selection personally for me.
That's the very lens I film my videos on. It is wonderful.
I have quite a lot of Fuji lenses but this year have bought the 27mm and 75mm Viltrox lenses. Really love them both.

How far you are when using 18 mm, and what body?
It really depends on what I'm shooting. Sometimes close, sometimes further back. I'm using X-T5s and X-Pro3s.
I just ordered the new Viltrox 56mm 1.7. Super cheap…. And surprisingly small. I’d like the 33mm at some point

My 18mm 1.4 hesitates slightly as the aperture blades adjust, really bugs me, that's using an XT3

Ooh the function band, they are amazing! Great shots!
I found the 18mm noisy on my XPro-3.
Shouldn't be noisy?
