I remember walking through Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester and heard someone singing this song. The person's voice immediately jumped out as being completely different class to the buskers usually in that area. Then i realised it was actually Seal.
He is a magician. He looks so calm, so serene, he's playing guitar almost as an afterthought, all while he's delivering a phenomenal vocal performance. Most people would struggle with doing one thing this proficient and casual
Singing, live singing, is hard work. He was working hard but his throat was relaxed. That's how it's done. There is so much orchestration here the guitar is not needed. Seal used it probably because he's comfortable singing with it. BTW, he was playing his guitar upside down. I guess he learned to play that way. It may have been Seal who came in too early with the chord change at 7:07 of this video but maybe it was the keyboard.
@@John_Malloy He probably has switched out the nut and restrung it for lefties. Given the limited choice southpaws have it's not uncommon. And my guess is that it's the keyboard, I think Seal can play that song correctly while being asleep edit: He has done no such thing, at least when I'm not mistaken that's a legit leftie thinline Telecaster. The small horn is at the bottom
While all true... he's been singing this particular song nearly every night for -- are you ready to feel old -- 30 years 😂. He's had a couple practice attempts.
The story goes when Seal wrote this amazing song he wasn't convinced it would be a great success, until he played and sang it some people within his immediate musical circles and they all said how much they were blown away by it, so he put it out, and just look at the global appreciation he's received for it, so much so, this tune was chosen to be played as part of the Batman movie franchise (Batman Forever 1995). Seal is a wonderfully talented singer/songwriter with an amazing voice. Lovely reaction as always Beth. Thanks. 🙋♂ ❤
I'd never heard him sing live. Man, his pitch is flawless. It's not an easy song to sing, since it moves from chest to head to mixed and has some large interval jumps as well as some unusual note choices.
This is one of those where you hear the studio version and think, he probably ain't gonna get there live and will be pulling back various parts. But none of it. Very impressive.

I have seen Seal live doing jazz, swing, and his regular songs (this is also a songwriting masterpiece!). Its a bit like Nothing Else Matters in the great songwriting tradition. But that aside, as a live performer, he is just incredible, one of the best singers I've ever heard.
What I love about him (apart from his obvious talent) is he's such a nice bloke. The videos of him singing with buskers are great. He doesn't take their limelight, just sings with them... Great stuff.
This is not an easy song to sing. The jumps make the song, but also make it harder. You can't sing this song tense, you have to relax or it all comes apart. Breathing is always important but in this song very much so.
His MAGNIFICENT version of Who Wants To Live Forever in 1992... From Argentina, I know him thanks to SpaceJam and his voice just get stocked in my head forever
When originally written, he actually threw it in the corner of his bedroom and forgot about it, only pulling it out when he needed another contractually obligated song for an album. The original version was slightly different than the one we know today. The history of the song is actually pretty wild -- all the things that happened when they did and how they did -- and then to go on to be the song that made him what he is today and one of the most famous songs AND from a movie soundtrack at that (this version we know anyway). It's a pretty interesting read.
Sounds so easy when he sings it. He is an awesome singer with great control and a great silky tone. I struggled a lot when I covered it. Quite hard to sing. :)
Nice one for covering this Beth!😊 Can't go wrong when it comes to Seal, beautiful earthiness to his voice, it's warm and airy! He's a really great artist! One of my faves!
Beth you've done it again, I just love your technical explanation of singing ! Gives me more appreciation for this craft. I hope in the future we wold be so lucky to hear you sing an entire song. I would love to hear you sing Teena Marie's part in FIRE AND DESIRE ! Well a fan can dream. Peace
Can't remember where, but somewhere on TH-cam tube people had the gall to say that he couldn't sing or something. I mean, this is a very rangy song! From how high he is when he sings "baby!" To how low he is when he says "grave" . It's quite a journey, that he makes look easy.
