One of my FAVORITE songs of all time. To me it's the definitive ballad. You've no idea how many times I've had this blasting in my car, singing along (badly).
Easily one of my top 10 favorite songs of ALL time! An absolute majestic masterpiece!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The story goes when Seal wrote this amazing song he wasn't convinced it would be a great success, until he played and sang it some people within his immediate musical circles and they all said how much they were blown away by it, so he put it out, and just look at the global appreciation he's received for it, so much so, this tune was chosen to be played as part of the Batman movie franchise (Batman Forever 1995). Seal is a wonderfully talented singer/songwriter with an amazing voice.
I just listened to a Song Exploder podcast on this song today. Hearing the vocals isolated is a stunning experience. This is definitely one of favorite songs from the '90s. The use of the major chord where you'd expect a minor is what makes it for me. Well...that and the lyrics, vocals, and arrangement. Lol.
Great reaction, Nina. Kiss From A Rose is beautifully written. It reminds me stylistically of the folk song Greensleeves, or perhaps an English madrigal. Like you, I also love the switch between major and minor, since he uses the named minor rather than the relative minor to signal a bold emotional change. This is a nice performance of it, too. Seal still gettin' it done. It's nice to see who your musical idols are, as well. Now my musical idol is Angelina Jordan, and I can't wait for you to experience her in beast mode with the black & white video of I Put A Spell On You. :)
Had a beer with Seal when he played with Adamski (singing Killer), really nice guy. I loved the way he slides the timing of certain phrases as well, puts a nice dynamic on it and tricky to keep in check, a few milliseconds longer and he is late, but he stays in the groove pocket….nice!

Great choice! I bought the 'Seal' album only because (1) I heard this song watching Batman in the theater and (2) It got a lot of Grammy attention. I totally went in blind. It remains one of favorite to listen to from start to finish when I want something a touch on the quieter side. The record is brilliantly arranged and produced. And, of course, then there's his voice. Many thanks, Nina.

@ninaschofield it's funny you reacted to seal because I watched his video for crazy today and that too is my favorite song of his. Nina I'm not even sure you do reaction requests anymore but if you do could you please react to this live version of When the War is over by John Farnham. It's John aged in his 50's but he still shows he has a great voice and its such an emotional song.
