Starry Night Cichlid “Madagascar” Care

  • The Starry Night cichlid is easy to care for. It is also referenced as the Madagascar cichlid. This gourmet mix of food sold on amazon is my favorite. It’s 10 brands mixed together.
    More Fish Tank Randomness:
It says to use this for water changes. I also read it could help with ich. My question is wont it make my water too salty if I use it on weekly water changes? No because the water change takes the salt out if it's large enough.
so do you only dose the water you take out? For example if I do a 5 gallon water change do I just dose the 5 gallons or the whole 30? I only use if my fish have ich. But if they do I use this stuff also turn up the heat on your heater to make the parasite fall to the gravel and then the salt kills them much like a slug and salt idea.
I think they have ich. The fish had it about a month ago for sure i could see it spreading and growing after a few days. Now my gold severum and green severum had small white spots on their tail fins. I raised the temp to 86. I also put in the salt Friday. The spots never got bigger and they didnt spread. I do not see the spots now but I need to do a water change because my nitrites are high so would I dose for the amount I put in or for the whole 30g.
Starry night cichlid Care. I would micro dose to raise the the water column perameters slowly as to not crash the column I use a teaspoon at a time drop let it dissolve and add if need but.. Usually but is about he gallon size if the tank is a good measurement to go by.
Why are people putting salt in a fresh water tank on a regular basis? Depending on what fish you keep, salt can be a great addition. Some fish and plants do not like it at all, so make sure you have a quick google of what you keep. It is indeed a great treatment for Ich, and also the general health of fish. I use this for my weekly water changes
1gm per L so if your tanks 30l add 30gm and if u take out 10L every water change just add the 10gm of salt in for the new water
I have fish over seven years old and have been adding Aquarium Salt to my freshwater tanks since the late 1980's. I have all kinds of tropical small to medium size fish and plants too. What I don't have is any ich or parasites.
    Ever.
Salt does not evaporate so only use with the water u remove and replace with water changes. I use 1tbls for 5 gallons and i have a planted tank with over 40 fish.
One dose as on the package is beneficial to fish. You would need more than one dose for ick 2-3x. But i do not like doing that.. esp not to salt sensitive species.
I tend to keep one dose in my tanks. After the initial dose, obviously only replace what you take out with water changes. If you have a digital salinity meter, you are targeting 0.1-0.3% salinity. 0.5% is target for ich. 0.8% is potentially danger zone. 1% matches the fish and means they switch to starting to try to export salts, which freshwater fish are terrible at, so they will sicken as they use too much energy trying to do that. All things in moderation.

Dont keep them with mbunas. Mbunas will pick on other fish and eventually kill them. They’re best with peacocks and haps

It takes experience as an aquarist to understand the difference between hardline “rules” and just general “precautions/preferences” when it comes to water column chemistry and tankmates.
Like I have a successful, happy tank in Orlando, FL which has had 1 oscar, 1 clown pleco, 1 albino bristlenose, 2 severums, 1 T. duboisi, and thousands of tiny local silt snails for almost a decade.
Speaking of the Paratilapia polleni, I just introduced a juvenile to my tank. The oscar is about 8 years old and is at that stage where he prefers sitting on the bottom in various spots and eats when I bring food directly to his mouth (he doesn’t go looking for things to eat anymore but will eat if it’s right in front of his face, so now I wonder if he lost a lot of his eyesight). By the time the oscar passes he should be almost full grown.
I considered a new juvenile oscar instead but my duboisi can be an asshole so it would have to be larger than the duboisi and those are hard to find, outside of finding a rehoming-bound oscar. The baby polleni is a lot smaller, but he’s stealthy and the duboisi doesn’t really pay much attention to him at all. Plus the Starry Night cichlid is gorgeous and I have black sand substrate that would really show him off. 😊 We will see how it goes.
UPDATE: My Oscar is back to being fully active again, swimming the entire tank so I guess he had a lazy phase that passed or he just felt like sulking for months back then. The Polleni is now about as large as the Severums, and he enjoys going in and out of the cave I placed in the tank (the Duboisi did pick on him for a little while, but he doesn’t harass him anymore now that he’s larger, go figure). Everyone seems to be getting along great. 👍🏽

You are correct. Three is a difference between healthy population of farm raised fish and fish being almost extinct in the wild which is true not only true for "Starry night" cichlid but for all the fish from Madagascar which is the case. Although Madagascar is an island off the coast of eastern Africa. This means the fish of Madagascar not really African cichlid.

I think bleekeri or polleni go better with African cichlids as they are African cichlids or New World cichlids. They do great with other more laid back haps. . . or even an all Madagascar species tank with larger sized Madagascar tetras, etc. They can do well with larger Rainbowfish as well. Thanks for your video!

  • @Nobodyreallyatall
    @Nobodyreallyatall 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, they are in danger of extinction in NATURE, which is important. Yes, you can buy tank raised juveniles, at least now. The problem is that tank raised fish can be mixed race or minor hybrids, there are multiple collection points, and quality of tank raised fish can get very crappy over many generations especially with mass breeding. After many generations the tank raised fish are not really the same as the original fish and you can't get any more wild fish to breed for new stock or to continue the species. Eventually the fish can disappear in the hobby as well as nature.

i always referred to mine as a "black diamond". one of my favorite fish, i have ever had! i will try to grab some video in the near future for you. i dig your vids, and your knowledge! i just recently had a large tiger oscar pass away, so i have been grabbing a couple more fish to fill the void. i just recently got a pair of fire mouths, a green terror (another one of my fav types of fish), and another oscar (my very fav type of fish), to swim with my black diamond, jack dempsey, a white african cichlid, some type of cat fish, and one pleco. i did not realize the black diamond was also african, until i watched this vid! they are all living in a 180 gal tank. ill work on those vids, and try to send them to you! thanks for your videos, they really help me out! take care, my brother!
