      It's a good concept but to an average consumer it's confusing. It's similar to how Playstation gamers make fun of Xbox's naming convection. I think after the XZ3 it's just an enthusiast smartphone brand. The market is over saturated & it stands out. They need to rethink their naming convention & marketing. Marques' Sony 1 ii & now iii criticism still valid.

      I think it's just another way to complain about Sony. Maybe the company is not as generous as others to reviewers. If Sony made the perfect phone they would complain about the colors or that the headphone jack is not sideways or other things that strangely are not as vital if it's a Samsung or Apple product. The fact that a 30 watt charger is included passed unnoticed while the others barely put the phone in the packaging. But they are fantastic.

    Would be curious to know if you guys have tested the impact of decreased display resolution on battery life in other phones.
    A 4K screen will still have to render and illluminate 4K worth of pixels, even if you decreased the graphics output to 1440p or 1080p through software. The battery savings would really only come from the GPU not having to process as much display data. That would show up in gaming or watching videos, but that's when you'd probably have 4K enabled anyway? This is very different from refresh rate, where the screen and processor have significantly less work to do if you cut the frequency of redrawing the screen.

    • @hnielsen123
      @hnielsen123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But... if you disregard the GPU rendering, why would it take more battery to illuminate 4k pixels over 1440p or 1080p? It's the same size screen, and the same brightness. The pixels are just smaller.

    • @yustwastaken
      @yustwastaken 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As someone who preordered this phone, I look at this aspect in disappointment. IMO it's the only real weak point and I simply wouldn't use 4k if I had the option. I have two 1440p 27 inch monitors and at roughly 20 inches larger than a phone, pixelation is just simply not an issue. 4k on a phone is overkill, there is no defending this point IMO. If I could, I would switch it down to 1080p (or possibly 1440p) just for the chance at a higher battery life. I don't know if this is something that could be included in a software update, although it seems like it could, I'm not going to hold my breath.

I don’t know if it’s correct but the first waterproof or resistant phone I knew was from Sony, it even claimed to be a dust proof because lot of the phones then had open back for battery removal. Even some of the thinnest phones I knew were mostly from Sony. Have to wait to see the real world results, but I find it hard to believe that a Sony phone with Sony lenses, Sony sensors, and Sony color science takes "meh" photos. I'd be curious if the MKBHD team does a lot of photography and photo editing. An unedited or RAW image is going to look muted and shallow until you take it to post. This isn't a point-and-shoot which is what Google, Samsung, and Apple are aiming for so the 1 iii won't produce high contrast, saturated, and sharp photos out of the gate. I'd like to see a Sony Alpha photographer use this and edit the photos using Lightroom.

    So i think like youtube has this ad region revenue whre viewers from some countries like canada, Australia gives more revenue if they watch an ad than others, youtube can make regional membership plans which i know will be less money from an individual but if you have 2x the members for 30% deduction of membership plan than that's good and more ppl use that service.

    I’d love to hear an episode talking more about new markets for subscription models rather than owning products. Your conversation about a Tesla subscription reminded me of a car subscription service I’ve heard of on the Not Just Bikes TH-cam channel where you can “reserve” a car when you need it while the company maintains their fleet. Sounded interesting!

  • @zaqsd
    @zaqsd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it is interesting that Marques talks about a car subscription, because in switzerland we have kind of a similar thing, where our rail company (SBB) offers kind of a subscription where you can put it together with a travelcard or free parking for so many hours per month at rail stations and you can also choose to add a car and more detailly things... Of course it is not directly the same thing and it is still from a transport company so it is not fully car focused in the sense that he meant it but it still is a step into that direction to a future where you just pay a monthly fee for a car and transportation bundles or just a car or just the transportation bonuses...

  • @imicca
    @imicca 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The problem with subscriptions is that you don’t actually own anything and that’s also a benefit in a way but in my opinion it’s mostly a problem in the long run

    • @BrotherChimaobi
      @BrotherChimaobi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I saw this argument a lot 10 years ago, and based on the popularity of subscription services alone I would say this is a problem for a minority of consumers. I am from a generation where owning physical media was normal, so the idea of paying to "borrow" something as opposed to "owning" it is definitely strange buuut - it works. It's us oldies balking at Spotify I think, because the current generation of consumers understand that what they are paying for is access to songs/albums they can listen to as opposed to ownership of those. Not to mention the ownership question is not involved when subscribing to a creator on Patreon for example, you are funding their creations - not paying for ownership of what they create right.

    • @imicca
      @imicca 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrotherChimaobi I am 27, so for me its also normal to own things. But some things I agree, makes no sense to pay huge upfront. But then more and more things are becoming sub-based. We are approaching utopia of own nothing, share everything

    I think Marques is right about robots and the Boston Dynamics thing. They are precise. And only do exactly what they are programmed to do. Where people get freaked out is the thought that somehow the robot will start doing things on its own. Which we know is “impossible”….unless they start to introduce AI to these robots. Where you allow them to start to think on their own and do things without being prompted.

    Android Apps: I would be interersted in Android Apps in Windows and I feel this accommodates a specific group. My reason is because I use a Galaxy Tab S7+ about 50% of the time and an Android phone the other 50%. If at work, Windows takes about 30% for that day and the rest is split between the other two. The big reason I'd like Android on a Windows device is the size of the devices screen. Not in resolution, but in physical size. I do a lot of image/video editing on my S7+ and it would be nice to use it on a bigger laptop screen and not need the Galaxy Tab anymore. Interesting. This could cut into that last bit of Android tablets, and for good reason.

    Great discussion but I don't understand why youtubers have an issue with saying 'mark ii or mark iii'? It's just a simple way of denoting a further iteration of a particular model. If the 4K screen operates like on previous Xperia models then it won't be running at 4K all the time. The 4K resolution is only used when necessary, like for movies and photos. Sony are not new to the periscope camera as they used them in their Cyber-shot pocket cameras many years ago. I would not be surprised if future Xperias have full optical zoom functionality. I think the Xperias are now on a steep developed curve (refinements to screen, cameras etc) but for me they still make better photography tool than the Galaxy phones as they over process their images. Great for social media but not so for photographic control. No phone is ever perfect but there should be room in the market for different style of smartphones.

    Is it dangerous if we get to a point of super individualised subscriptions? Regardless of a value standpoint, by tailoring the content we consume so precisely, we're closing our eyes so much information... When talking about the issues raised in The Social Dilemma, e.g. political divide, aren't we just exacerbating confirmation bias and driving individuals further and further apart? It sounds fantastic from a consumer enjoyment and creator success perspective, but surely society will increasingly become tight-knit groups and we will lose a sense of oneness and broader community? Especially as interactions are increasingly online, our ability to discuss and compromise seems to be deteriorating rapidly.
