I was recently in hospital for three days. A hospital menu booklet was given to me (Advent Health hospital) on the front of it was the statement: Believe in the power of food. It was something I could take home with me, and I did. It sits on my counter where I prepare the meals. Every day now I tell myself, "believe in the power of food." A balanced diet.

Dieticians think they know it all but they apparently dont. The new info out about sucralose (Splenda ) is evading them. Sucralose is being studied as bad for the environment and our gut biome. It doesn't break down and causes painful digestive problems. It causes problems in our water and water environments BECAUSE it does not break down. To, me, it's an emergency that needs to be a banned ingredient....asap.

I have Celiac Disease diagnosed later in life and had copper deficiency. I had extremely pale skin, skin/joint laxity, impaired balance/coordination, hair thinning, brittle nails, etc that have improved since my diagnosis. Copper is also important for synthesis of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine and this can contribute to depression/impaired attention, etc.

The more I look into supplements, the more they seem useless or problematic. Iron can be cancelled out by calcium. Folate can cancel out B12 I believe. Potassium to sodium. And now copper by zinc. I’d dive into a rabbit hole and try to mentally log these tidbits but it’s not easy to remember and find again. I wish there was a simple list.

Most supplements have an easy way to tell if you're getting too much and you should back off awhile. I'm not talking about an overdose. Please don't overdose; do your research.
With B6, it's exceptionally vivid dreams. With zinc, too much will give you a metallic taste in your mouth. Not enough and your sense of taste and smell will be reduced. Too much vitamin C will loosen your bowels; not enough will give you mouth sores or skin rash. B vitamins can change the smell or color of your urine. Not enough D3 will make you anxious or depressed.
Honestly, it's a fascinating subject. If you dont want to do the research, take the advice of a professional. But I recommend doing the research.

I had my blood tested, which showed that I was very high in copper. I was then prescribed zinc to get rid of the copper and ended up with Severe Symptoms of copper deficiency,my hair went grey overnight. Truth be known. I think I was already copper deficient in the first place. I didn’t have an excess. The reason that the blood test was so high is because I wasn’t absorbing it. It was staying in the blood.

It's astonishing that copper and zinc aren't usually included in anemia blood testing panels given the intricate roles they play. You usually have to request a copper or zinc panel specially and certain labs charge extra or won't draw it.
Interestingly, there's some weird link to copper deficiencies in neurodivergent people or people with hypermobility. I think it might be because some of the genes don't cause it to be absorbed as well.
Certain chronic infections are also linked to copper deficiency bc the bacteria utilizes the copper. I had undiagnosed Lyme disease and developed a copper deficiency from it.

@@ashleys4263 An alternative perspective is that a mineral can be high because other co-factors for it's utilization are missing so the mineral in question builds up. The problem is that we look at serum levels and not tissue levels, and we don't have ways of measuring many of the nutrients with accuracy and relevance. So, high is low and low is high .. mind boggling. Personally, eating a lot of pastured beef (we live in Alberta) seems to have corrected all my highs and lows over time. These are cattle raised in the Foothills which are naturally irrigated with glacier meltwater from the Rockies. Lots of minerals in the soil and spring water.

I don't know how it works in other countries but where I live we have copper water lines and we drink tap water. I would think we run a bigger risk of having too much copper rather than too little. As a doctor, how would you measure copper levels in patients? Isn't excess copper stored in tissues and therefore difficult to detect?

I use the Ordinary 10% Azelaic Acid for my Rosacea, but you mentioned that it helps with bumps vs redness. I don’t have any bumps but more of a tendency to have redness in my skin. Too much copper can deposit in different organs in your body. I’m not sure if this an inherited factor or other reason. plus i have to read labels well, because some zinc supplements will have copper with them too

Every time I try to take a supplement containing copper, I can't keep it down. I vomit within less than an hour, completely emptying my stomach. This happened for the first time when I was in high school (I'm in my 40s now). Every morning, I was throwing up, and it took me over a month to figure out that it was the supplement that was causing it. I have this issue to this day, in liquid trace mineral drops, in a one-a-day multivitamin containing copper, etc. Any idea what might hypothetically cause this reaction? I realize that you can't give me medical advice, I'm not asking for this, but just, what might you consider as the possible cause(s) in a patient with this reaction?
