    STORY
Fred has been an avid gardener for over 25+ years--gradually growing and expanding his organic garden, to where it is now, during that time. He has been a general contractor, owning his own contracting business (Detwiler Builders), for over 40+ years.
Now 60 years old, since he adopted a whole-food, plant-based (WFPB) lifestyle in 2012, Fred has lost 60+ pounds of fat, lowered his cholesterol to 129 mg/dL (from the high 200's) and lowered his blood pressure to 110/70.
    He takes absolutely no medications.
He can help you do the same through his practical gardening tips and ideas, his comprehensive 'how-to' and DIY project videos, as well as, his helpful advice on how to live a 'Plant-Smart' lifestyle!

Yes! It is art work, that's what I've always felt. Thanks for what you do and who you are.

Thank you for your kind and warm words, Val! Although she has 3 children that occupy most of her time now, my oldest daughter is a terrific painter; she has some of her paintings hanging at her home which is a roughly 15-20 min drive from my home. Her work, and the act of painting in general, really inspired my outlook on gardening/a garden as a canvas--an ever evolving work of art that is painted. I am glad that I could share some of those thoughts in this video. Have a wonderful day!

Happy Memorial Day! You have the most beautiful garden! I have gotten so much inspiration and ideas from your channel. So happy to see your channel grow just like your garden!

Thank you for your kind and warm words, ThymeToSow! It is always exciting and encouraging to me when I hear that others are inspired by what they learn on/from my channel. With so much knowledge bottled up from my years as a contractor, and gardener, I have been extremely fortunate to have discovered a platform like TH-cam to share this knowledge with the world. It is something that I certainly don't take for granted. If there are any particular topics you would want for me to cover/record videos on, don't hesitate to let me know. I hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day! By the way, I love your name! Very smart and creative! :)

Thanks for the in depth tour of your lovely garden Fred. Your accomplishments are soooo impressive. You don't mention having to deal with squirrels. They ate most of my tomatoes last year in spite of my efforts. Particularly disheartening is when often they'll just take a few bites and waste the rest. Have you found a method to enclose them? I appreciate your advice.

Thank you for your kind and encouraging words… I do have some squirrels on my property but I never have experienced them eating my tomatoes…but I have had a few groundhogs in the past that just take a few bites out of the tomato and leave the rest…It sounds like you may have a groundhog in your garden…the red tail hawks around my property take care of most of my squirrels!

Plant-Smart Living w/ Farmer Fred no groundhogs in Colorado to my knowledge. A relative of theirs, the marmot, lives at higher altitude. But the squirrels are lined up waiting for my goodies to grow. Very brazenly will take things even if I'm watching. I grow lemon cucs for them as that seems to be their favorite, but the late frost destroyed them last year. Sigh.
      Congratulations on your new grandchild!

Birds will sometimes do that also if they don't have a water source. A birdbath near the garden helps in that case.

You have a beautiful garden. I'm a southern gardener and avid seed saver. My I ask if you grow any heirloom vegetables and save their seed? Being self sustaining is so important and economical. Thank you for sharing your world with us.

Thank you so much for another amazing garden tour. Could you please explain the teddy bear? 🐻 I'm sure you have a story about it. Thanks again!

Hi there, Crystal! So glad you enjoyed this garden tour! As for the teddy bear...there isn't really any deep insight or meaning behind the placement of it in my videos; my family was fortunate and blessed to welcome our newest baby--our granddaughter, Elizabeth--into our family last week (Tuesday, May 22nd, she was born). Leading up to that, and now that she is born, the teddy bear just reminds me of cherishing the fun and play with my now 4 grandchildren--something that has been made possible, and more enjoyable (like playing outside or on the ground with them...), in fact, now that I have regained/restored much of the health I had lost prior to adopting this plant-based lifestyle (I mention my story in some of my past videos...). Overall, the placement of the teddy bear in my videos really helps to incorporate a bit of warmth, fun and spontaneity. I hope that helps to answer your question about the teddy bear! Thanks for asking! If there are any particular topics you would want for me to cover/record videos on, don't hesitate to let me know! I hope you have a wonderful day! :)

I really enjoyed your overview. Thank you for sharing your past. I've been gardening for over 50 years now. It is fun sharing with people on TH-cam. I agree with you in that I try to encourage people who know little about gardening to start small, even a couple of pots on the deck with a few vegetables.
If you can please check out my channel.

We use kale in our salads and also steam that as a side dish and also in soups!
