Well actually, it was originally supposed to just be a placeholder title, but Nintendo just got so used to it that they didn't bother changing it, and it was called Super Mario 64.
Russell Sapphire Yeah, that’s what I meant by the original comment. It’s funny that at the time they were not set on a final name, when it ended up just being Mario 64 anyway. Lol
This is a really cool project. Hope it gets finished. Also hope we could actually get the real demo leaked one day, kinda like the Pokemon Gold 97 Spaceworld Demo. So much old stuff I wanna see
Sadly it most likely will not happen, as that demo was leaked because someone hacked Nintendo's servers and stole the rom from the servers. Time will tell, however
its criminal your sub count, the quality of the videos, the stuff shown, the lack of screaming and click baity and attention begging is amazing. I trust when I click on your videos that I will get quality, learn stuff, and see something I have not seen before. TY for letting me trust you.
It's interesting how famous the story is, that supposedly they perfected Mario's movement before making the levels. But here we see levels pretty close to their final versions with Mario movement that still had a way to go. However, his basic run speed and jump height, etc. seem to be pretty consistent. On another note, thanks for posting about these old beta versions of great games. As a developer, it really helps demystify the process a bit and make me feel more comfortable with it - Nintendo doesn't get it perfect the first time either, just gotta keep working at it.
Some other things I noticed: The trajectory for the Side Somersault looks much closer to how it originally was in Donkey Kong '94, and the slowly regenerating health reminds me of Yoshi's Island.
You know what I like about the channel Tony? That to me,it feels like you don't off a script and instead, say what you want and have fun as you'll do it,hope you hit 1m subs soon Also, why does Mario sound like Michael Jackson when he...side flips?
This channel is a N64 fan’s dream come true. I read every bit of information that I had access to when Ultra 64 was a rumor. Being able to watch the Mario 64 demo from Shoshinkai is amazing. Plus the original Ultra 64 controllers are amazing. I would love to see Mario 64 be redone somehow using the graphics from the original Killer Instinct and Crusin USA arcade cabinets. The N64 didn’t really live up to the graphics as promised when playing in the arcade and I always thought of that as a bit of a bummer.
OMG in 1995, I was 13, and awaiting the hell out of the Ultra 64. I made monochrome photocopies of magazine coverage of the Dream Team. Shoshinkai was a special thing in my world back then. I read as people way more fortunate than me got to play these games, while I just continued to wait again and again as the N64 got delayed more and more. When I eventually bought the N64 used at Gamestop in 1996, I didn't have enough money to buy Mario 64 and had to settle with Blast Corps (which was great). I always regretted not having Mario 64. I still have not beaten it to this day, but my goodness I recently started playing it and I'm determined! Shoshinkai long played out as my Nintendo dream that I'd never experience first-hand. This is great!
That was incredibly cool. I also noticed something you didn't mention. It looks like Mario's yawn animation started up very quickly as opposed to the normal game which takes several minutes. Also that was spliced variations of Mel Blanc for Mario's voice.
When I was little, I missed Mario's gruff brooklyn voice from the cartoons, but I did end up enjoying Charles Martinet's now iconic portrayal. Either would be better than the screechings.
Fun fact: On SpaceWorld 95 if you look closely, there is an inscription on the TV: SUPER MARIO 64 (TEMPORARY).This means that this is not the original name.
I Always dreamed to play this beta and the restoration project Is fantastic! Keep up the good work all this Nintendo stuff from the past need to be preserved!💪💪
‘Space world, as it was known then Soshinkai’ according to the schedule Soshinkai was the introductory event (lit) on the Friday for press and industry people with an address from Yamauchi. Space world was the public event on the weekend.
You are correct, but Space World was eventually the name for the entire event. Hence, it being formally known as Shoshinkai. The distinction/separation of the two was only in earlier years.
this was great. There's something about this prototype that is so interesting. I wish we could do the same for Super Mario World, that game's beta is fascinating
3:41 I beg to differ on that. The slower descent has the potential to make the spinning triple jump really good for clearing larger gaps. Usefulness is not its main issue. I have to imagine that the spinning triple jump was rather exploitable in many regards but it would also really suck accidentally falling out of the level at a snail's pace if you missed a jump with it.
I remember years ago when a very similar project like this was being made and shown on TH-cam, only it had the long jump. Unfortunately it was canned. Also, I noticed that in footage of the Shoshinkai demo, Mario would take a bit longer to accelerate, whereas this recreation seemed to have kept the final's acceleration.
Man, these are some spectacular videos you make... One last detail about the beta game: when you're fired from a cannon, you can fly out of it! So, no caps, but you can still fly around! Also, may I add you look kinda like Ash Williams but with neater hair?
I don't know why we all have a fascination with playing old builds of games because most times they are always worse, but it's weirdly satisfying and makes the final product just look that much cooler because the game was once so much worse. I imagine it makes us appreciate the final game even more because we could see the night and day differences between old and new, and we could sort of become understanding of the work that needs to be put into a game to make it a good game.
I think without a doubt the controls and movements are improved in the final version. Even the sideways jump is much more useful than the tiny jump in the demo. I think more importantly, while the demo looks absolutely great, and was much better than anything else at the time, the final game's level designs are nearly perfect. Even with its camera problems, given its time I think it's as close to a 10 as a game can get. Yes, it still frustrates me at times and I wonder why I can't move the camera more freely, but it was soooo good back then. You can't expect a better camera years later when it has been perfected. I'm actually surprised by how different the demo was from the final game. It just goes to show how much care and effort Nintendo put into really fine-tuning the game. It's really impressive. I know they only claimed the game to be at 50% at Shoshinkai but this looks like a lot of changes to me.
The leak brought a lot more accuracies to TPP than it had before. Mario's shading was different, the UI elements are 3D modeled, some textures looked different...
Fun Fact: Mario's Shoshinkai voice was voice samples from Warner Bros. studio open audio library (probably has a different name, feel free to correct me.) So, this voice was probably never meant to be a final decision, but probably was put in place so that a voice actor for Mario couldn't leak anything. (Only a guess on my part, don't take that speculation as anything definitive.) Looking forward to trying this rom!
I remember seeing stills of this in CVG and ONM as a kid, in 1995 this was unbelievable. Super Mario 64 moved forward in such a short length of time. Interesting bit of history to play.

Why the editing of the person's name? Was it in an original version of the video. Or you recorded it as such and upon asking for approval the person requested to remain anonymous? I know, I'm weird. Lol
This whole recovery of the beta is amazing but the shoshinkai name rang a bell outside of the Nintendo convention and i was right. The word has a few different meanings in Japanese, all of which seem fitting for a video game trade show. Same goes for the words shoshin and kai. I knew they were separate words as well from all my anime days but couldn't remember what they meant other than kai can mean king of kings. Anyways for those interested i won't spoil it and let you do your own research, I just wanted to put the info out for those who would find it interesting as well. Personally the Japanese language always has fascinated me with its intricacies so things like that really peak my interest.
@@JoeMama-pd7nt basically, since so many people wanted wario in Mario 64, the mind would make a ghost of wario head in the game when you went inside a corridor. At the end of the corridor, there's a portal. When Mario gets close to it, wario head will appear and say "YOU WANT FUN? WARIO SHOW YOU FUN." and start chasing Mario, chomping and laughing crazy. People who had this experience had memory loss or seizures because of it. And if the player thinks about wario or what happened enough, it would give wario enough power to be inside the players reality.

At the end of the corridor, there's a portal. When Mario gets close to it, wario head will appear and say "YOU WANT FUN? WARIO SHOW YOU FUN." and start chasing Mario, chomping and laughing crazy. People who had this experience had memory loss or seizures because of it.
