What is an asset class in finance?

- In this video I cover the different asset classes within the financial markets. These consist of, but are not limited to, equity, fixed income, cash and cash equivalents, real assets (think infrastructure, real estate, etc.), and alternative investments (hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, etc.). I also talk about the benefits of diversification in portfolio management and why investors split their capital across asset classes. Huge fan of the channel, has been really helpful in my application process and career prospects. If at all possible, I would love your opinion or a video on what to do if you can't land yourself a Summer Internship (in my Penultimate year now). I have a particular interest in Asset Management and Distribution, but am starting to get scared about my prospects in the industry if I don't get an internship this summer. A plan B/alternative route into the industry video would be much appreciated.

Hello Afzal thank you for the massive value you're constantly giving us. I have a question, can you explain why investors in the first place deal with investment banks ? why is it a better investment when they buy those financial products like the "half a yard for 4 cents" in the Industry series or stuff like that, why those investors don't put their money in hedge funds or real estate ? I am trying to understand this in order to get the bigger picture of IB. Thanks!

Hi Afzal! I'm currently studying for my Batchelors in Business Management and want to work in the finance sector and one day run my own company so I'm debating doing a masters/CFA/both and which side I want to go into and your videos have been SUPER helpful! One thing I'm still not sure about is the difference between asset management and wealth management offered by private banks. Is it basically the same thing just a different service package?

Hey Afzal, can you provide insight or a video on transferring from back office to front office (ex. Risk to Investment Banking) within an Investment Bank. I don't see any resources for that online, thanks
more formally, grouping of investments that have similar characteristics. the most common ones: equities, fixed income, cash, cash equivalent, real asset, and alternatives.
0:50 equity is part issued by publicly traded companies for investors to purchase. normally in stock exchange.
the asset class of equity is typically subdivided by sector, such as technology, healthcare, and so on.
or by company size, such as large-cap, mid-cap, and so on.
1:30 bond or fixed income, they are debts, loan, and interest payments. fixed income are less riskier.
if you're risk-adverse person,
2:00 cash in money markets. this is liquidity. compared to real estate.
2:30 real assets: real estate, infrastructure, and other physical assets. they have protection against inflation. property. this is illiquid, you could lock your money for at least more than 5 years. illiquid but you can expect higher return generally.
3:20 alternatives: hedge funds, private equity, and venture capital. not consider safe and thus risky.
4:15 diversification: spreading eggs across different boxes. not gonna dampen the other asset class allocation.

I know that for Investment Banking or private equity, financial modelling and valuation skill is very helpful
But will it help for asset management or hedge funds or private wealth management devisions?
I am thinking to learn financial modelling and valuation, and my main tartget is asset management devision. But if i will get chance i will go into investment banking or private equity.

Hey, financial modelling and valuation are more relevant for investment banking and PE as opposed to AM and PWM.
