      Loved the video Afzal! First time viewer, definitely subscribing after this one. Question for you (and Alex M would love for you to chime in if possible). I'm 2.5 years into corporate banking at a global bank and my long-term goal is getting into PE. I know that may sound like a drastic jump but I'm determined. I'm thinking that trying to get into IB first would give me a better chance. What are your thoughts? How should I go about it? Am I out of my mind? Lol. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

    • @alexm8954
      @alexm8954 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fmooosa my personal opinion is that making the move into IBD is pretty key to making the step. Getting some experience and deals under your belt will give you the skillset needed to make the move into PE.
      Also I think important to think what type of fund you want to join - MF, UMM, LMM, sector focus, geographical etc.
      In Europe languages are also a consideration that you don’t have so much in the US.
      All that being said, totally realistic ambition, I work with guys at my fund now who started in audit and then got big 4 corporate finance experience. Hard work and you can achieve it

      @@alexm8954 Thank you so much for responding! That's great advice. I actually work in the Canadian office of a European bank and have considered transitioning to one of our offices in Europe where we have more deal flow. BTW would you say CFA is a must? I just started studying for level 1.

    I am currently a trainee at a City law firm, and will qualify into the M&A/corporate/private equity team. I like my job but I've realised I'm more interested in the "business" side of the deals themselves than providing legal advice on them. My plan is to get as much deal making experience as possible and then work my way over to the business side - whether through switching to the M&A department of an investment bank, and then going into PE, or going straight into PE.
    It would be good to know what you think firms like Goldman would think of an experienced lawyer switching into IB. I am considering doing the CFA in my spare time, which although it is not really tailored to M&A, I think would help to show I'm serious about finance, and also be good for general knowledge of the financial markets. Maybe you could do a vid for people like me who have started other (related) careers but are thinking of switching. Really great vids btw - keep it up!

    Investment banking is easy to get into. Do not have to go to top houses. Can go to lower ranked none BB. However, getting into a top PE firm is far harder. Much easier to go to Goldmans and Harvard than land a top PE job. From Goldmans they only take say top 10% of staff

    There's one thing that i desegree. I don't know in USA, but here in Brazil, these banks does not care about your university. You'll just need to have their culture and stuff; you don't need to be graduated in a Top 10 university (like University of São Paulo). In J.P Morgan Chase of São Paulo, you fund a lot of differents universities, Top 10 or not

    Could I get a job as an investment banking analyst at the age of 14? I really have a high passion of one day working and I can't wait. I do not care if I will be stressed out but what I care is to achieve my dreams. I even predicted the crash of Bitcoin when it was at $59,000 I really wanted to short it but my dad didn't allow. So I lost a large opportunity lol 😹

    Hey Afzal, really like your content, super helpful and enjoyable.
    Just had a quick question:
    I'm trying to work towards getting an insight week in a decent firm (2022), and I want to learn some basics by completing a Financial Edge training course, maybe the 'Modeler' course.
    My question is 3 part:
    1. Could you put the Financial Edge training course on your CV/Application, seeing as they supposedly train bulge bracket analysts?
    2. Would that benefit your application or just look out of place?
    3. Finally, what course from Financial Edge would you recommend?
    Thanks Afzal!

    • @AfzalHussein
      @AfzalHussein  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, thanks.
      1. You can indeed, and most definitely should, include any FE certificates that you do in your CV/application. It'll help you stand out and shows initiative.
      2. It wouldn't look out of place. It'll stand out in a positive way.
      3. It really depends on what area of an investment bank you're interested in working in. For example, for front office areas such as trading, asset management and investment banking, Financial Edge have a trading course, an asset management course and investment banking courses (modeller and a valuation course).
      If you do decide to purchase an FE course be sure to use the code AFZAL25 at checkout for 25% off the normal price.
