    medieval found footage most likely refers to the concept of medieval people being capable of photography, it is a very fringe theory but there are some interesting things about it. like for example we still don't know how Da Vinci executed his sfumato technique, the paint particles in his paintings have been shown to be only 5 microns thick (human hair being 70 microns thick and many of our modern paint particles being 30 microns thick), we don't know how he did it but he was able to produce nearly photographic accuracy when it came to lighting and shadows. it could also be a literal film of the medieval world.

    • @bulletghost3452
      @bulletghost3452 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

      There is also the technique of "Camera Obscura" which was invented in the late renaissance which you could argue is still in the medieval age as there were still feudal states and there could've been some very realistic paintings or even be called photos which could be very interesting if there was a surviving artifact.

      Yes, there is another Iceberg, I believe entitled "the photographs iceberg" that has the last section dedicated to pre-photography experiments, but the ones referenced only go back to 1614 (Angelo Salas silver nitrate experiments) so not necessarily medieval.

    • @KingFluffs
      @KingFluffs 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      It doesn't. It was a creepy pasta/meme started on /x/. It's clearly fictional, but it's reported to be an amateur recording either made by a peasant or a time traveller which shows a group of knights leading away a very scared old peasant woman as a crowd gathers around to watch. There's various "stills" which claim to be from the footage, but they can all be traced to either AI generation or purposefully blurry screenshots from known movies set in the medieval era.

    As someone who really enjoys the concept of mystery icebergs as well as medieval history, I really appreciate this video.
    One remark/critique: You could have mentioned that the term Dark Ages is also often used to refer to the scarcity of written sources in this period, not necessarily about this era being primitive. Its not necessarily a term denoting an obsolete understanding of the early medieval period.

    • @kacperwoch4368
      @kacperwoch4368 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True but most people are not familiar with comparable period known as Greek Dark Age so in most cases "Dark Ages" is used as a pejorative term for Middle Ages (which itself was originally negative)

      When I was listening to a podcast on the roman empire loads of names like that came up and I never knew if it was 1) coincidence, 2) the word for what they were associated with came from their name 3) they were retroactively named after what they became associated with etc, nvm the mess of them having later ancestors that sometimes supported opposite sides, or everything else changing to make it look that way. So many things today are relics from decisions made by just Diocletian, Just Constantine, Just Augustus etc.

    The Green Children story is actually pretty fucking sad- the current belief is that they were most likely sole survivors of a shipwreck and that they were the children of Flemish dyers which is why they had a greenish tint to them and the locals couldn't communicate.

    Firstly, Bluesquid, I would like to thank you for making a well-edited and scripted video about my iceberg, I wish you success in TH-cam. I created this chart back in 2022; I remember I was interested in the Middle Ages at that time after playing the game “Kingdom Come: Deliverance”. This was my second iceberg, the first was a small iceberg about the Titanic, it was also my first post on reddit.
    The truth is that seeing your video and recalling this work of mine, I realized how strange this iceberg was, unfinished, with entries that should be in different places, with wrong or misspelled names. I'll list all the items that I think were unclear, my mistakes, and topics that were not correctly mentioned in your video (something I don't blame you for, as I said, this iceberg turned out a bit strange).
    1: The original name of the iceberg is "Medieval (and early modern) Iceberg". I'm mentioning this because, despite having mysteries, most entries are about a theme “known” to historiography. I decided to include the beginning of the early modern era (1453-1580s) since the transition from the previous age's thought, economy, and way of life was very gradual.
    2: Crusades entry: Yes, I wrote Crusades with a “Z”, sorry.
    3: Vlad II Dracul: This entry was supposed to be about Vlad III, but I wrote it wrong again.
    4: Stanford Bridge Battle: You forgot to mention that in this battle, a Nordic warrior managed to block the English advance across the bridge by himself. According to reports, he killed up to 40 Englishmen and was defeated only when an English soldier floated under the bridge in a half-barrel and thrust his spear between the bridge planks, mortally wounding him. He is often described as fighting with almost superhuman fury, typical of the berserkers in Norse mythology.
    5: Psychedelic Sacred Art: This topic refers to supposed representations of hallucinogenic mushrooms and their effects in some medieval sacred art pieces. The theme is well explained in this video from the “Hochelaga” channel, which I used as a source when I made the Iceberg called: “Psychedelics in Christian Art”.
    6: The Roman Empire fell in 1453: This entry was meant to discuss the controversy over the date of the Roman Empire's fall since the Holy Roman Empire also claimed the title of the true Rome. The claim of the Eastern Roman Empire was weakened by the narrative of the historian Hieronymus Wolf, who lived in the HRE and thus fabricated the name “Byzantine Empire” to differentiate the HRE, to him the true successor of Rome, from the schismatic Eastern Roman Empire. You could have also mentioned other empires that claimed the title of Rome's successor, such as the Ottoman or Russian Empires. So, depending on whom you ask and which claim you choose, the Roman Empire might have ended in: 476 AD, 1453 AD, 1806 (HRE), 1917 (Russia), or 1922 (Ottomans). My favorite is the claim of the King of Spain. Shortly after the fall of Constantinople, the last heir of the Eastern Roman Empire passed his dynastic rights to Charles I of Spain, who was also Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, with the title of Charles V. This means that the current King of Spain is the legitimate heir of the Roman Empire. ROME LIVES, ITS EMPEROR IS PHILIP VI OF SPAIN, AND ITS CAPITAL IS MADRID. AVE IMPERATOR MORITVRI TE SALVTANT.
    7: Splitting of the moon: Actually, with this entry, I was referring to an event witnessed by monks in 1178. Explanations vary from an asteroid colliding with the moon to a meteorite tearing through the night sky and causing this confusion. I found this account through this video from the “MedievalMadness” channel called: “The Unexplained Medieval Mystery of the Splitting Moon...”.
    I had no idea that a similar account existed in Islamic faith, and it's good that this coincidence is also within the same historical period.
    8: Machu Pichu: This topic is more about the secrets of Machu Picchu, such as the face of the mountain, the perfectly cut stones, and why anyone would build a city in such a hostile place. Also, not many people associate the ruins with the Middle Ages, even though the city was built around the 1420s.
    9: Rodulfus Glaber: I placed this guy among the last topics because of the bizarreness of his tales, and also because icebergs include some topics of dubious veracity on purpose, with the intent of “mystery.” But they are just tales. ut of curiosity, my favorite tale of his is “The domain of the dead,” which tells the story of a priest who is appointed to a church right after a massacre was carried out inside it. He is tormented by spirits who expel him from the church twice. On the third attempt to enter the church to purify it from the spirits, they burn him alive. You can see this and other tales in this video from the “MedievalMadness” channel called: “7 Medieval Ghost Stories & Old Tales of The Paranormal...”.
    10: Medieval found footage: It is an ARG posted by TH-camr Basty 666. Basically, it's a story about Nazis traveling to the past through a machine known as "Die Glocke." And on one of these trips, they supposedly recorded images of the Middle Ages using this technology.
    And yes, at the core, this is just a joke. The "found footage", "(DO NOT SEARCH)" and "All copies of X are personalized" are common ironic jokes in iceberg culture.
    For more information, you can watch this video from the “Rinlanpikk” channel called: “What is “Medieval Found Footage”?”.
    11: Banquet of Chestnuts: You wondered why I used purple for this topic; well, the colors red and purple are related to lust, and since red can also mean danger, and I had already used it for “(DO NOT RESEARCH),” I thought it would be cool to use purple, as the entry refers to an orgy.
    Oh boy, this is probably the longest comment I've ever made on TH-cam. The creation of iceberg charts is a true art (which I certainly am not a master of), discussing a topic and its subtopics while keeping the viewer's attention is a difficult task. Researching everything and assigning each entry its rightful place in the iceberg is an arduous task. An example of an iceberg created with, in my opinion, mastery is the 9/11 Iceberg. It held my attention from start to finish, always surprising me with something new about the topic. The “RamtroStudios” channel made a sensational video about this iceberg, called “The (Full) 9/11 Iceberg Chart Explained”.
    Thank you, BlueSquid, for your effort in making a video about my iceberg, and congratulations, as you managed to make the second most viewed video on your channel so far from a somewhat bad iceberg. Greetings from Brazil.

    Great video, just wanted to leave two quick observations:
    1. The supposed "Medieval found footage", I think, is reference to a video on youtube that supposedly depicts, well, a time traveller recording footage in the medieval period. One commentor on reddit mentioned that the footage was from a 1963 spanish film called "El valle de las espadas" or valley of the swords, released in english as "The Castillian". Basically it depicts the adventures of a 10th century castillian count named Fernán Gonzélez who founded the comital dynasty whose descendents would rule Castille in the 11th century. The commentor goes on to expose the real locations of the footage of the video and it is genuinely interesting. I think the video is more of a not so clear attempt at evoking a sense of timelessness or even provoking an eerie sub-conscious reaction, like an uncanny valley sort of concept.
    2. Any reason as to why Prester John was not mentioned?

    • @Blue_Squid
      @Blue_Squid  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      That is interesting on the found footage thing and as for the prester john thing, he was not on the iceberg, but I sort of covered him on my previous iceberg. Also, in the future I hope to be able to make a longer form video about the story of prester john.

      @chasetosh3767 He's referring to the now long standing phenomenon of intellectual discussion of European history (especially in regards to the middle ages) revolving around a very biased and antiwhite characterization of that civilization as being uniquely ignorant, backward, filthy, and hateful. It's been the mainstream view for decades at this point, and is quite obviously motivated by one's personal politics. Folk like the above commenter will run interference for it with moat and baley tactics (a form of arguing in bad faith you can look up if you want to know more about). Gunpowder probably came from the Vikings. There's been a manuscript from the 1250's with about 30 different recipes depending on application. It was disputed until a few months ago. Modern forensics took a long look and say it is genuine. The attribution goes to them due the development time in refining dozens of mixing ratios. It could not have been invented and refined And crossed two continents in such a short time without reasonable doubt.

    This was well-researched. It would have been easy to lean in on the spooky mysteries and conspiracy theories, so it's really good that you went to the effort of actually reading up on them and providing the rational explanations. The original iceberg seems pretty odd- there's quite a lot of post-medieval stuff on it, and there doesn't seem to be much logic to the order the entries were put in- lots of not-very-mysterious stuff ranked as more 'mysterious' than the genuinely eerie and unexplained tales. Like, why would the 'feast of the Chestnuts' be the deepest part? It's just a dubious anecdote about a debauched party intended to illustrate the corruption of Pope Alexander VI and his family. There are loads of more interesting, better-documented and more mysterious stories about them. Cesare likely murdered his own brother and Alexander had his daughter Lucrezia declared a virgin so he could annul her marriage and marry her off to someone else, even though she may have been pregnant at the time. Just a really odd choice.

    • @Blue_Squid
      @Blue_Squid  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I agree with you about the ordering of some of the entries, they were a bit misplaced I felt as well. Thank you though for the compliment!

      My criticism would be your "Christianity map" is not accurate for many reasons. You obviously don't understand what a Catholic rite is......Roman rite is just ONE rite under
      🇻🇦THE 1 HOLY CATHOLIC & APOSTOLIC CHURCH🇻🇦
      AND
      every bible is Catholic and the protestants just took out and edited their versions (sinners bible) and Jesus founded the Catholic church soooooo you should have CATHOLIC at the top of your map. Thanks 🙏

    20:32 So, overall great characterization. However, one thing I think needs some good clarification here: the Arab Slave Trade didn't just go away. It was pretty much diffused as late as the early 1900's due to colonization of North Africa by the British and French. Additionally, it formed the foundation for the modern slave trade that still exists today, especially in states like Qatar.

      I just use a blue yeti mic, I'm not sure the model but it's pretty basic, also to edit my audio I do not do much as of rn, I just record it and adjust the audio levels once it is in the audio track if they need adjusted, with time I will hopefully have better audio.

    Hi, new sub here. I have a few thoughts I'd like to share. Some consider the UFO phenomenon as a modern folk tell tale just like dragons, mermaids or kidnaps by demons in medieval times, just modernized into the context we're living today, and following that thought, what the hell was the Nuremberg event? It's like a literal star wars or an aerial warfare, besides, based on the testimony and chronicles, it's like an actual close encounter of the second kind, it's nuts.
    On the other hand, it seems you have forgotten or not considered mentioning The Plinian Races, they are mostly featured in bestiaries but they run into a rabbit hole leading into teratology territory and the likes, authors like Ambroise Paré, Conrad Lycosthenes, Ulisse Aldrovandi among others have depicted in some kind, the "other" human races called by Pliny the Elder back in the day, perhaps you want to dive in this weird part of medical oddities and prodigies. I have some scanned material of old books if you like.

    Ufos are not in those Bible paintings, they're depicting scenes from the Bible and the "ufos" are how the artists depicted God as described in the scene.

It's blowing up & younger folks with indepth gaming experience & academic knowledge have some great opportunities to get creative. Even outside of schools,educational games are one of the top interests among professions like museum staff, cultural landmarks, arts programming, etc.

    I stand by the term "Dark Ages", though I think the plural is important. It was not a period of complete darkness for human history, but instead a period where comparatively many places were going through a dark age. Hence a period of "Dark Ages".
    Seriously though, historians be like "You like x! Why do you hate y?" As if saying some places in the world were Dark automatically means all places were. I mean, are they going to take issue with the Renaissance because there were American tribes not going through a rebirth? Get real!
