Classic Mini Mk1 Conversion - Part 45

  • In this Classic Mini Mk1 Conversion episode we make a temporary sandblasting booth to sandblast our 1960‘s classic Mini mk1 doors. As expected from doors this old they are a little rusty. We also set up a temporary spray paint booth and give them a coat of paint after building them all back up and fitting them to the car.
    We couldn‘t resist trying the red wheels, but unfortunately there’re about 4 inches to big sadly🤦🏻‍♂️ Haha!
    So let’s crack on, I hope you enjoy the episode

    Just imagine how many more minis would be around today if they had used a bit of sealant when they put them together in the factory instead of sprinkling rust seeds through the cars. Great job lads and great to see you back at it Dad.

    Quite brilliant. I’m an engineer by training and I’m in awe of the fabrication skills. I love it - especially the dolly work by Dad. That is the best part for me - Dad and Son and working together on their project. Tiger seal is a good move too. BTW - where do you get your plastic sheeting from to form the spray booth? Oh and also quick fit fittings on the air line? My use of old duvet covers from the garage joists isn’t quite as good and I’ve just acquired a compressor. Thank you again and bring in the next instalment!

    Wow that's a shit load of blasting material, lucky bugger.
    I was told and you would need to check you don't need any more than 90 psi for blasting.
    I found every time I used the blaster tank like you I got shocks, so I now put a ground strap between the gun and the piece I am working on.

    Your doing a fantastic job , i bought 13 minis a few years ago and restored 8 off them the rest i used for bits and sale parts . My purpose at the the time was customising ie special paintwork and interiors .They all sold at the time between 3 and 6k wish i had them now !!!!! Also had a couple off Coopers which sold for good money . Its funny people think because it a small car the work will be easy ? lol J P autos

    Nice to see your dad back in action Mark, great work, I raised the issue of the cant rail a while back, not sure where you can get them from but if memory serves the section ove the front and rear screens was never changed and although they are curved they help capture the profle(?).The use of the Tiger seal is great and should solve any future rust issues, I personally still put the welds in as well as sealant.When Mini's where in production they used to knock seven bells out of the doors to get them to fit, brutal but effective!

    • @upbuild4397
      @upbuild4397  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, yeah I’ve had a few ideas about how I could make the Cant rails myself but I’m just not 100% sure I can get the perfect finish, they need to be perfect as there’re on show as you know. Yeah I agree, I think We’ll put the welds in the doors too.

      Hi, apologies for delayed response. The pressure blaster is great for blasting larger items you can’t fit in a blast cabinet. Admittedly it can be a little messy and it does get blocked at times, but this is minimised by using new dry media and keeping water out of the lines. I think we might do a short episode on the blaster with some handy little tips we’ve discovered using it.

    Very nice to see a father and son working together and having a good time doing it. I would have cleaned the spilled black sealant right of reprimered the damaged spots and put a tiny little role of the similar but than in white sealant right against the folded edge of the doorskin were it meets the door frame. It will prevent water from coming in between the two panels even better. But I would love to see you guys continuing

      Hi yeah 2k epoxy primer, the filters are for use with the 2k but they don’t last long maybe only a couple of uses.

    Hello both . Hammer and dolly , it's the only way ! So, Dad must have been in the trade as having seen all of your video's l've often commented how you constantly put so called restoration specialists to shame ! And watching how you controlled the gun just sealed it for me , your Dad is your mentor ! All my children and grandchildren are girls and really never showed any interest in bodywork /restoration .....pity! I would loved to have passed on my skills to them . l trained up a few apprentices over the years. I would strongly resist sand blasting the shell with the media you're using . I did a couple of Lotus Cortina's and it proved impossible to get rid of it . I still had particles getting in the top coat , not on the top surfaces , but out of the box sections !!!! It really was a night mare ! Your saving grace is the mini doesn't have too many boxed in area's ! Great stuff as always and l think the one thumbs down is someone pulling your legs ! Thanks .
