Review: 2020 BMW 540i xDrive - Peak 5 Series?

- I review the 2020 BMW 540i xDrive, the last model year with BMW's signature angel-eye headlights. With its strong inline-6 turbo engine, snappy ZF 8-speed automatic and xDrive AWD it drives great, and with a luxurious interior that still had knobs and buttons at this point, it really is a high point in BMW 5 Series history. And now, just a few years later, these G30 5 Series can already be had for half of their sticker price like this one is and are a great value on the used market if you're looking for a luxury sporty sedan. What do you think about the 2020 BMW 5 Series? Thanks to Harrison Auto Sales for providing this 5 Series to review! This car is for sale and more info can be found here: www.harrisonautos.com/details...

I have this exact car in white and it’s the best sedan I’ve ever owned. I get 28 mpg in a mix of highway and city driving. I’ve had zero issues and only changed oil and the battery. 65k miles and no squeaks or rattles and just as quick and fun to drive as the day I bought it. Underrated car for sure. Great review.
Which year? I’m torn between this, 440i gc and m340i lol
@@asifuzzamansami40795 series is more luxurious, comfortable, and spacious than a 440i or m340 but it lacks more driving feel. 440 feels more “sportier” and smaller while m340 is exactly that but more sport oriented and powerful. m340i is faster stock than both of the cars mentioned and has a slightly more reliable b58
How do you get 28 mpg? Crazy! My bmw 530i Touring only gives me 11kmpl
The engine is based on x30, x35, x50 diesel... real workhorse
I agree with you. This a timeless modern classic. Although I think the M550i was perfection. Also love how Matt is filming the actual buttons and knobs as if they are an ancient relic.
I like these used car reviews. It shows how well an interior holds up over time with real owners
Any BMW with a 6 cylinder is a gem. The 4 cylinders are , ... fine. I've always liked the 5 series
I agree that this generation of BMW is going to age much better than their more current cars. This one feels more like an evolution than a complete redesign
B58 540i is definitely the pick of the litter. You can tune it if you want more power, but it already has plenty of power stock. 30+ mpg is easily possible with the B58. Such a versatile machine!
It's got the legendary B58. Silverback Jack approves
Good one! 🤣
Beeeeeee58
Early ‘20s BMW 5 series and X5s are really good cruisers, super chill to drive and quick
I have a 540i bought it used with 35k miles. I've had it 3 years. Such an all around great car! Good looking, comfortable, fast, easy to tune for more power if you wish. Although I'd love a M550i this offers superior gas mileage and reliability over that car and will make it past 100k miles without bankrupting me. I look forward to driving it every time I get in! Love this car! Great review!
Awesome review Matt. This is a good car for the money. It’s still mind blowing how aggressively these depreciated
Because when they break instead of $150 for a part it's $850 for the same type of part. If not much more.
Harrison auto so nostalgic 🥹
I like these used car reviews from local dealerships. 👍🏾
Thanks, glad you like them!
Harrison Auto Sales should include a link to your video on each car you review that are still for sale. Why the heck not... it's a win-win.
Good idea, I'm not sure if their website can support videos, but I can talk with the owner and see.
This is the most positive 540 review i have ever watched 😅 Im mostly leaning towards c43, and 440 but tbh 540 is around same price with better comfort and luxury.
Lmk what you get I can’t decide either between M340i, 440i, M4 and 540i
@@kwamz1872 I am also in a similar position but worse also considering c43,e43 or e53🤣 I won't track my car, it will be family eco fun and cruiser so I eliminated M4,and m550 and all v8s. Also eliminated m340, expensive and 440 has raving reviews, also looks much better. So it's between more fun or more well rounded car for me (440 vs 540). Tbh I'd pick any which is cheaper or in better condition for minimum price.
@@makaw2006I’ll say a 540 in terms of fun and overall functionality, and it’s super low right now in the market. It would be a great buy
All the Euro mags love the 540i. It is faster than the E43 and lighter.
TY Matt for reviewing this classic beauty, it brings back fond memories of when I worked in the entertainment industry back in the '90s & early 2000s. Those Bimmers were among the funniest to drive in our fleet. However, when the X5 was introduced it stood out as far more superior to any of the BMW sedans even until this day. The only rival to the X5 was the Porsche Cayenne , please review these two when you get a chance please, God Bless!
Thanks for watching Greg! I'm definitely open to reviewing any interesting X5s and Cayennes that I can find. I did review an X5 a few years ago too if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/1JaXbPzgiJo/w-d-xo.html
I agree I was also in the adult entertainment industry we had a great time
Such a phenomenal car. Plus it can be tuned to over 500 hp easy. Plus it’s reliable.
Beautiful ❤
Good review!
Thanks Bern!
Nice one!
Strong tune absolute sleeper
I’m loving my 2020 but sometimes I wished I splurged a little for a 2021 or 2022. The 2024 model looks strange
2017 - 2020 are the best 5 Series
This is probably my favourite looking 5 series with this G30 generation. I love the LCI 5 series of this generation as well. Also, who doesn't love a good BMW inline 6 cylinder engine? I think the 540i is the best value in my opinion, because it's a good middle ground between the 530i and the M550i. The 530i with its 2.0l turbo 4 cylinder was a good amount of power for those who want the base engine, but the 540i with the 3.0L B58 turbo inline 6 was a good middle ground before moving to a V8 powered 5 series with the M550i and the M5. But you don't really need the V8 M550i and M5 when the inline 6 cylinder still gave you great power at 335 HP. Also yes to physical buttons in BMWs, because looking at all the screens in modern BMWs today, it's a bit too much. I love this older iDrive system where it's very user friendly, and it's still easy to learn when it comes to the overall interface.
Now this was cool. My sister has the same car, same year, but in white. She loves it. I've never driven it, but I've been in it plenty, and it's an amazing road trip car.
Thanks for sharing your experience man and I'm glad you liked the video!
Why no review on the E 450 coupe plus you got the cle coming out next year
i seen this and your 2020 330 review. did you review the 2020 440i grand coupe?
I reckon the dash panel on the 2020 540i did everything right in terms of user ergonomics - use of a touchscreen but with crtitical functions like HVAC still getting tactile physical controls. The choice of a control wheel or touchscreen to give flexibility. The modern trend seems to be to eliminate as many physical controls as possible but do people really want that??!!!
I have a 2020 m340i xdrive and have put 64k miles on it. Great car. Trans fluid, diffs, transfer case, brakes, oil, brake fluid and some other random maintenance is all we've done. One door handle broke. 550 to fix myself and complete nightmare. It's tuned, catless downpipe, and dinan carbon fiber intake. It'll run door to door roll race with a newer zl1 10 speed car. 11.1 at 124 mph haha on 91 octane b58 tu is a monster
Thanks for sharing your ownership experience!
I think this is easily on the Top 3 best designs for the 5-series among the E28 and E34
How is the noise inside? sounds a bit loud in your video. Thanks.
This is exactly the case when an old model is better than a new one in all respects.
I just picked up a 2020 540i CPO from BMW with 19,000 miles for $35k.
Honestly think this is one of the last handsome BMWs. Really not a fan of the current design language. I bet these things scoot even more with a tune.
WHY is the rev counter going the wrong way. I would bug me everytime I drove it
Get that one 2020 touring. Manchester uk rocket car
Personally would never buy a bmw that wasn’t an i8 lol, but this one looks really nice and classy!
I know you haven’t driven an m340i but I think it’s ODD how used ones from the current Generation and used 540i’s from this generation are basically the same price with comparable miles on the used car market
My guess is that the M340i is more sought after so it keeps the prices up to the 540i levels, but I didn't realize that was the case. Seems like it would make the 540i even more appealing then.
always felt like bmw car interiors are so cheap, the plastic looks like something from fisher price
E39 was peak 5 series, G30 definitely isn't the worst though
I agree, E39s are amazing.
F10
Before the shit grilles 🙏🏻
I’m the first thumbs up. Lol.
Thanks for the thumbs up!
Dang it, someone already bought it!!!! Ugh
This car doesn't have the M-Sport brakes or staggered M-Sport tire setup.
Then you don’t know what Msport brakes look like 😂😂. wtf do u think larger (than base) brakes are?😂
@@thermalkid9383 I have a 540i with the M-Sport brakes. They are blue and have a big fat M logo on them. They are made by Brembo and TRW (rears). They are a standalone option in some markets and are the same as the brakes on the M550.
The car in the video does not have them.
@@cd4984 M- sport brakes on the G30 comes with non painted OR blue paint on the calipers. I suggest you go search the web to try to prove me wrong.
Great video! Coincidentally I’ve been debating whether to get a 540i with the M package or an M550i. I’m concerned about the N63s reliability, although this would be the 2nd technical update. Pros and cons… 🥲
I’m having the same dilemma… the N63 is scary because its riddle with tons of engine issues..
