    Schools are just horrible.
I'm not even 18 yet, I even know multiple problems about School.
First, I agree about the learning styles.
I'm a good level in Maths and English, (for my year).
Sadly. Since my recent Maths test, I've moved down.
Despite me knowing I should study, and I could've studied. I never did it.
People call that laziness but if I did study, I would've forgotten. You see, I have a bad memory. I can't remember alot of things and I can get distracted too easily.
I can be a good student and actually learn, it's just that my memory is letting me down.
Maths itself, is shown to be one of the most hated subjects. I understand why, Maths is complicated and u don't really use most things in it. However, it helps you with living. Taxes, Budgeting, Money, etc.
The layout of Maths just seems very complicated. It's very hard to memorise it all, this is for one subject.
    Every other subject can follow.
Homework is also a problem, we work 7 hours and 55 minutes at School.
My family work for 9 hours (including breaks + lunch), sometimes below or higher.
I see why Homework is used, it's used to do something at home and for you to learn, but...
Homework was invented as a punishment, this could mean in a sense that we're getting punished. Not only that, we work all day.
Forced to sit, listen and sometimes risk our bladders because some adult won't let someone to go because of 'misbehaving'.
We then go home, all tired from seven classes. Then, you receive a pile of homework.
That's like being forced to work overtime, which is illegal. You can't be forced to work overtime, it's completely optional.
Oh, and let's talk about how classes deal with bullies!
    Completely BS.
Teachers don't do anything about bullying.
They try to tell everyone the harmful consequences of bullying, but their gonna carry on. People won't stop without a good reason, it's not like the Teachers help either.
Oh right! Their busy sitting on their chairs, on their phones or drinking their morning coffee.
I haven't mentioned English alot, it's because I like English. It has a good layout and I actually don't do alot of memorising. If you want help on a essay, just read the source and you have everything you need!
That's what other subjects lack, a fun teacher who gives fun activities after hard work.
It's better than working hard then you having to repeat all over again.
I truly believe it's the Teachers, our freedom, homework, tests and social interaction we want to change.
Teachers are usually very bossy and shouts at anyone who even dares moves a muscle. I'd prefer if we do hard work and the uncompleted work is homework, then you have a fun time as a treat.
Less tests proves to be better, it gives more time to actually learn instead of forgetting right after.
We would want to also change how people get punishments, we're told that we have a dress code and that.
However, I notice many people breaking dress codes and even one of the top staff don't do anything about it.
I believe we shouldn't have uniforms at all, just give punishments to people who dress inappropriately.
Anyway, that's all I have to say.

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I'll never forget how they absolutely crushed a classmate of mine in school. We were in the "creative" class with parts of the class focusing on art and the other on music and we'd write and perform plays at the end of the school year. My music teacher was playing this incredible tune on her piano, we all asked her if it was some sort of film music, but as it turns out that classmate of mine had composed it. He'd sit down and just come up with the most beautiful melodies and he composed the music for an entire school musical alone. He wasn't the best at Maths and some other classes, he was also a little goofy, so they constantly told him off, saying he'd amount to nothing if he didn't change, cause these things were more important than being skilled at composing and playing the piano. He was teetotal at first, then he suddenly started drinking & smoking until he eventually dropped out of school to become a nurse. I think about what he could've achieved if he'd gotten more support quite a lot.

That makes me fucking sick to my stomach, I play piano and I know how extremely hard it is to write music and how talented you would have to be to write it well at young age and the fact that teachers ignore all your skills interests and focus on teaching main subjects because that’s the only « useful knowledge « you can learn at a young age it’s fucked up. And I understand that not all teachers are like this but I still think that a lot of these teachers and pretty much everyone around us isn’t aware how much impact and responsibility these teachers have, they decide wether our next gen isn’t going to be shit or great and they just decide to pull this bs.

Teachers are also a problem - some despise the school system, but others have grown to love it over the years. I've been passionate about biology and zoology since I was a kid, so I was very excited to go to high school and talk to teachers who could actually answer my questions. But I was unlucky and ended up with a very strange teacher - at first, she seems sweet and nice, doesn't assign a lot of homework, and bends the rules a bit if it's supposed to help you. The problem is that she absolutely hates any questions, even if you ask them. You know, she finishes the topic and says the typical "are there any questions?". And then she has a problem with you if you asked her anything, especially if it's not in the textbook and goes beyond the school scope (which is kind of funny, because in final exams there are supposed to be questions beyond the school scope). She has a lot of incorrect, stupid opinions - she's prolife, doesn't know shit about biology at the university level, and has a lot of weird, incorrect theories (e.g., male seahorses aren't really pregnant, they swallow babies and keep them that way XD). She's also sexist and treats women like shit, she also has the stupidest grading system I've ever seen (she gives you open questions and expects you to write only summaries and drawings, she IS going to yell at you if your drawing is ugly or if you wrote too much). She has greatly damaged my passion for biology, it used to be my greatest passion, but now it's just a small spark. Sometimes it lights up a little, but then I remember how many times she embarrassed me in front of the class for just asking a question and I lose motivation. It hurts a lot.
this comment may sound a bit weird, English isn't my native language. my biology teacher isn't mad at me because my native grammar sucks lmao

a good start to improve school is teaching children why they should care.
Imagine telling students before their first history class, why we study history. To learn about the past, to understand the present and estimate the future. to gain perspective for our own lives through those that came before us.
Imagine doing that for every class, tell them why they would need this in their real life. especially when they are older and close to the end of their school life. get in touch with reality. My grades went up an entire unit when I started doing this to myself in school. When I could give myself a reason to care.

Even then it's still an idiotic system, it doesn't comply with kids circadian rhythm (sleep patterns) it is way to long (around 6 hours) when it should be 3 hours this would captivate the children and not bore them to death or feel a fight or flight mentality. Schools don't do a good job at interactive teaching, they have a terrible teacher-student ratio, children aren't given the same rights as adults and are treated like prisoners (like being denied the use of a bathroom) schools are dull institutions with no colour or character, attendence is overvalued with threats being sent to parents for having the kid be off school, schools are filled with viral pathogens, it's an unsafe environment with multiple crimes being commited in these dangerous institutions a day, its an outdated concept, we live in a world where home education with the assistance of Ai and free courses everywhere. We dont have to do 8 subjects a week to evidently focus on only one in college ECT ECT.
But I do agree with you, telling the child why they are learning something is much more effective than just throwing a book in their face and forcing them to do homework and outright punishing said child for not doing school at home. It sparks the child's interest in the topic and makes the child learn themselves outside of school.

History teaches you nothing about the future and barely even explains the present. For example as someone from Poland I can guess how teaching people about Holocaust would explain why a lot of people currently hate and distrust Germans but I consider that utterly unfair that future generations are looked down at because of something their great-grandfathers peers did. What history teaches is hate and stereotypes. And it is actually quite close to our ages. I find literally no value in knowing that in the distant past some stupid Polish king took some other country princess as a wife (I don't even remember her nationality because it was so stupid and useless information) and afterwards her family ended up governing Poland or something like that. Stupid people in stupid ages. What does it teach us? We don't even have kings nor political marriages anymore. And the fact that people are stupid is well known even without the story of the past.

I was in Finnish primary school from like 98 to 07. From the very beginning I had full attention and curiosity to school. Didn't like home work though so I wiggled my way out of them by different means when we got them. Could say I was even better than average student(we did have tests). But all that changed we got to the 5th grade. Our class teacher changed and she pretty much hated boys. Whatever we did was a matter of contacting home. We did quite crazy things as well and I was pretty "free child" but most of them were just the usual trickery what boys of that age would do. But it wasn't just the trickery, it was also the performance in lessons. If you were boy you had to show the most brilliant results or comment to get bit of praise where girls got the normal amount of praise and cheering to keep child going and proud. We boys were basically demonized. As the result me and many others stopped giving a F regarding school. Even my mother says that woman partly ruined our education.

I've finished a private middle and high-school in the same building, spending time with mostly the same teachers. There are of course bad teachers in there, but the best ones I know sparked and helped develop my passsions. My Physics teacher was the number one reason I was interested in drawing and animation, since he was so unconventional with his teaching methods. I'm not kidding.

Here in canada it was the same story. I only ever made it in school because I took adult ed after high school. Now those teachers were passionate about teaching. Sure the classes where longer, but the breaks in between classes where also longer. Also, the students were not dickwads that would interrupt the teacher every 5 minutes. We all wanted to learn... So it was very enjoyable. In high school, I failed with low marks and I didn't care... But in adult ed, i passed with full marks in every class, and I cared deeply about my grades. Great video. I have had the opportunity (privilege) of having been 'educated' in the US, UK, and Canadian school systems at various levels. For years I have been saying that our school systems had what sociologists call the "latent function" of training us to enter into the adult world so we could fill the jobs in our economies and be obedient workers. Schools so often for this reason quash creativity, for just how much real creativity can our current economic systems withstand without falling completely apart? Furthermore, the current political powers do not really want a truly educated public, for people who can think critically would turf out most of our political "leaders" and parties. A 'dumbed-down' voter is a compliant one, easily influenced by demagogues. Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" comes to mind. Did you ever think of doing a follow-up to this on A.S. Neill's Summerhill school?

This is so true, it's sad. So many people, including myself, have told our parents and sometimes even school staff that we're not learning a lot of necessary information. I graduated high school last year and we never learned important information like how to pay taxes and bills and how to properly get a real job other that how to fill out an application or write a resume(and not very well according to my dad). We were never taught how to actually even talk to people. Speech class was just "get in front of everyone and spout information you memorized" and if you can't do it or mess up, you get a bad grade. And it's even worse for people who have anxiety. Several people I knew had panic attacks during speech class because they were required to talk in front of everyone. They tried to teach us how to budget, but all they did was give us a paper, say we had a certain amount of money, and told us to choose from certain options that cost a certain amount of money and see how much money we had left. That doesn't teach us how to budget, that teaches us to choose the cheapest options that end up costing a lot more anyway because cheap options are a lot more problematic and break down much faster because it's made so poorly. I can only imagine how difficult it was for the "special" kids, who were almost completely separated from everyone else, only seeing and being around the other kids in the 4 minutes we get to get from one class to the next. In certain situations, I can see how that would be ok, but still. They almost never even interact or talk to all the other students. It's sad honestly. I live in America, and I've heard so many people say how horrible the school system is, and they're right.
Sorry for the rant, it's just so frustrating how we learn almost no basic skills in school because it's "the parent's job" to teach their child that stuff, when most parents around where I live don’t even really care much about their child or children.

I went to an alternative high school. It was amazing. There were only 5 rules. You called all the teachers by their first names. The k-12 students were treated as individuals and not tiny people to be controlled, punished and viewed with constant suspicion. You could choose what you wanted to study. There were no bells and no one forced you to go to class. And ya know what happened? Students wanted to learn. We would show up and have class on our own even without a teacher. And the kids who went through this untraditional school system went on to become educated, well adjusted and successful adults.

I went to a rather poor school system, but those were the teachers who gave me the foundation to critically think and to love to learn on my own. It is not only money that makes education better, it the allowing teachers to teach and having a milieu that supports individuals seeking knowledge. It is also having available a plethora of choices in what to learn as well as how to learn. Pathways to different vocations must be developed so that passions can be pursued in the clearest of ways. But, ultimately you have to have a culture that accepts and allows those pursuits in a true free marketplace, not one that government and special interests dictate.

Basically, they taught themselves most of what public school does, but they did it by just doing the things they were interested in. Nobody needs to be forced to learn math, for example; they'll figure it out as they interact with the world and the economy. Kids want to be a part of the world, you don't have to force them to learn the skills they need to do that, they'll pick them up as they interact.

Alot of our teachers pick the "smart ones" and they instantly like them, the ones who aren't smart are either ignored or made fun of, there was once a teacher that every time you answer something wrong instead of saying "no, try again, maybe you'll get it next time" she would say "what?? Is that even an answer??" And made the student never raised their hand again, and if no one raises their hands she would call someone by random and never call the smart ones, yes she is pushing us to study more, but why would a child study after being humiliated by their own classmates. Everyone that passed Gr 6 had trauma from that teacher but was relieved that the same subject but different teacher was someone better.

bro my 6th grade teacher was racist to all the black people she even called me intron of the class and i told her i was uncomfortable with it and she still did it more she said it was just some light hearted teasing but she showed my answers to the class whenever I got something wrong and said she using it as an example and she also said that me liking games is ridiculous and I should do sports activity but I didn't find them fun, and all the "sports" people weren't even in their the school separated me and my friends, luckily the three black people she was biased against (3 including me) became good friends but that didn't really make my school better, teachers have a really huge impact on your life, mine made me have suicidal thoughts and I still despise them to this day, if you have a teacher that's racist or rude you should tell your parents because when you get home and your parents are on the teachers side from their lies then it really isn't good, my mom thought I was lying because I told her I didn't want her to talk to my teacher about it, I feel like teachers should be nicer to students since they really develop the persons personality and thoughts, (she also gave me good grades even though I was dumb to keep her paycheck up, I didn't know that before it makes your pay go up but now I know.
