I myself used to code frontends (many old videos on my channel) for an emulation community in the past and it's interesting to see how much things have changed while the concept remains the same. Somehow it gives me a bit of motivation to work on my own once again and revive my old project. I'm also glad to see that today there are so many alternatives.
I was literally just going to pull up your channel to watch your last emudeck and emulation station videos to see how I could make it work on my windows PC. And here you are with the exact thing I’m looking for! What a fun coincidence
I've actually done all the work manually myself. I'm still tempted to become a patron just to support it, because I want people to be able to emulate fairly easily.
@@maxheadroomsfan Linux didn't need EmuDeck either, we had RetroArch for over a decade. It's a good thing the community is building and maintaining more software around emulation regardless.
This is just incredible. For years I've been keeping up with the latest emulators, downloading and configuring them over and over... Now I can just do this instead. This will replace my entire setup for sure. It's time for an emulator cleanout :D
Brilliant as always. Thank you, Russ! Love to see the innovation and great ideas of the EmuDeck team getting some love. Nobody else is talking about this, let alone doing a full walk though, which is why the community is so lucky to have you. That “game mode” for Windows is super smart. I’ve been replacing my shell with Steam Big Picture mode on Windows for years (in a separate user distinctly setup for only gaming) to achieve the same end, but doing it manually isn’t for the feint of heart.
Thanks Russ! I'd REALLY love to see a guide for setting up windows on steamdeck, specifically a really good guide on using tools like handheld companion. Since you do so many guides that end up being the go-to guide, I'm sure you'd knock it out of the park. Looking forward to the playnite guide. I've got it set up myself on a deck running Windows 11 and I'm really enjoying it, but sometimes handheld companion doesn't seem to work exactly how I'd like and I'm sure I just have something misconfigured.
Tried setting this up myself and did it but things are just subtly off. Been waiting for your vid to get the realness. Thanks for the video, you are dependable and reliable.
Already install this on my ROG Ally and my AOKZOE A1 PRO, Works almost as good as my Steam Deck. It will get there in time. Fantastic app and very convenient.
@@markcheeseball1837 No. If you want to emulate older consoles, you could just download and install the individual system emulators for free. However, you would have to configure each of them yourself. Emudeck is just a convenience. If you have no interest in playing older gen games using your game ROMs and all you want to do is play games from the established stores and publishers such as Game pass, Steam and others then this means nothing to you.
Great content as always my guy! I supported the Patreon and I can't to use all these options as they become available. You guys are doing some great work over there. Keep it up!!!
Just bought a Deck after thinking about it for months. The sale convinced me. This is the first thing i'm going to do with it. I cannot wait to backup my entire retro library onto it. It's going to be amazing to have a on the go and plug and play device for all of my retro games - to be able to be played upscaled on an HD TV, it's going to change how I operate for sure... but I'll always collect physical
Oh God EmuDeck does everything in a fraction of the time it took me to set up Launchbox, Retroarch and standalone emulators on Windows! They even got the 8:7 aspect ratio for SNES, which is the default output before it was stretched, Super Mario World blocks would be perfect squares, if you use 4:3 it would get stretch, that's why you get chonky Link in Zelda. Depends on the games, some are output with 4:3 in mind like MK3. I have to do some research to find that out. That's phenomenal that EmuDecks know about it right of the bat. God damn!!!
Really admire the Emudeck team and their work. But for Windows, I've been totally happy with Playnite. Very capable front end, and it has a big picture mode, too.
My plan this week was to put EmuDeck on my PC, coincidence that you put this on. However I thought it had been out for Windows already, I must had gotten mixed up.
Wonderful video and exiting news. Just switched to W11 on the SD and was trying to decide which front end to use (used Retrobat in the past and currently booting into Batocera when needed) and thias looks great.
I've just tried Playnite and it's almost perfect for handhelds. My ROG Ally feels more like a gaming hand held device now. I also like the Steam Big Picture but that's no surprise. Armoury Crate isn't that great to use, it's only feature to me is that it's faster to use because of that designated button on the Ally.
They need to have all the parsers available in the app. I had to create a shortcut for a non-steam program then edit the starting and target path for so I could play Virtual Boy ROMs in game mode. Slightly long-winded for only 4 games and no auto-scraping images -___- Same goes for the cores if I'm not mistaken but I didn't bother looking into that as the ones available were fine. Also, the layout for Steam Rom Manager sucks. Each type of image should display all of them at once like the SteamGridDB plugin for Decky Loader. It's just a pain having to click through each image at a snail's pace.
Pretty excited about this! I loved Emulation Station on a Raspberry Pi and have been waiting for it for Windows. The EmuDeck looks like a great easy way to set up Multiple systems at once on windows! So much better and easier than Launchbox.
Definitely not "better and easier" than Launchbox but certainly a cheaper (free) alternative. As much as I like EmulationStation, to make things clear, anyone who says something is better than Launchbox usually just doesn't want to pay for it
Does the paid version of Launchbox install and configure the emulators for you? I ask this because I don’t know. EmuDeck installs and configures each emulator for you. My experience with Launchbox is hours to setup anll the individual emulators. Yes I use this free version of launch box because I don’t care about the fancy screens.
Great video! Thank you for this. I just have a couple of questions: how friendly is emudeck with multiplayer? Is it possible to play 2 controllers the same game? Is it possible to set up a pokemon trade using gameboy emulator? Thanks again!
@rm13evmbig reason I'm not even bothering with my Ally. If I really want to play em, I'll download everything into a micro SD from my phone and just pop the card and and run the native emulators from that
Glad its free now I would never pay a dime to play my illegal games unless the games ran flawless but that's not the case with emulation an roms in general sadly
Im using it but man working around plugging a controller in with my ally and have it work and swap between the built in controller and my external controller is proving to be a living nightmare
Does Batocera work on the ally? Might be worth testing out to see if you get better power to battery ratio considering you dont have windows running. Also why hasnt anyone tried running Steam OS on the ally?
When I click “Launch” on Steam ROM Manager, nothing happens. It shows a loading bar that cycles twice, then on the 3rd try seams to crash. Don’t know what to do next. I’m using an ROG Ally and have followed all instructions up until this point.
Hi Russ, I don't know if you've noticed, but with the recent Yuzu update on Android it's now possible to use it on the Odin Lite. I made a video about it on my channel. Warm greetings from Germany
Russ I have two days to decide whether or not to return my Asus ROG ally to best buy. I live the form factor, power and open abilities for multiple game sites without work around. However it often feels Jenky in that things get stuck alit (in and out of emulator), or just not responding and lack of cohesion that the steam deck now has. I'm super excited to complete this guide. Do you think this unit will ultimately work as efficiently as the steam deck but with more power or should I return and just wait for a steam deck successor? Appreciate all your hard work
Hi, I think that things will improve on the ROG Ally, but it will likely never have that same seamless "console-like" experience of the Steam Deck and SteamOS, just by virtue of being a Windows machine. There are ways to hide it, like when using EmuDeck and launching directly into Steam Big Picture mode, but it's not quite the same as having a solid dedicated OS like SteamOS.
I would suggest format windows do a clean install i did that to mine day one and it ran better then out of the box but do a legit format not the recovery cloud from the asus bios hope that helps for u
Help please! I downloaded the file, sign up for patreon, however I’m stuck when opening the file, it gives me 3 choices to open it, media player, notes and can’t pass there, haven’t owned a windows device in at least 20 years, can’t figure it out please help.
Cloud saving was not working for me with google drive, system was very buggy, crashing when trying to use controller with N64 emulator. I fell back on using Playnite. The UI for Emudeck is far superior to Playnite, but I cannot say Emudeck is ready for user use. I am looking forward to trying it again once the final version is released.
Hi, i can't understand how the EmuDeck works with Retroarch. Both work as an emulator aggregator how they don't get in conflict. In my PC i have set retrorch with all my games, bios , thumbnails and settings of the emulators. how can add to emudeck reatroarch with all my settings. Because i saw in the video that emudeck need a specific directory where you put roms and bios.
Great video. I like the idea of using Emulation Station for all my roms. However, having the emulators directly in the Steam UI gives you the ability to individually remap your controllers for each game with Steam. Is there a way you can do this within Emulation Station? I know you can remap the controllers within the emulator, but it can be confusing since all emulators are different.
So my question to the comments is what should i use ... I'm pretty proficient at setting things up myself. I was torn between playnite (which is how i consolidate my pc games on my onexplayer 2, launchbox, and emudeck. I know playnite is free but emudeck seems tempting for 4 dollars to set up initially.
Super video, merci beaucoup! Juste je voulais ajouter la négation et interrogation restrictive, qui va nier une seule partie de la phrase (pour la négation) et qui va donner des réponses optionnelles mais restreintes (pour l’interrogation: tu viens chez moi ou chez toi?
Ok, I must have missed this video. First of all, Syncing saves/Save states, this is a dream come true. I hope it's standardized. I have so many devices that I can emulate on, that my saves are different on each device, and it requires copying over files to another machine to sync them. I have like 10 devices that I emulate on, and I find that a few devices, I don't even touch anymore because of this problem. By limiting the devices, I use, it's less I have to deal with this. Just silly question here, as it looks very familiar (SteamDeck owner), I want this on my Windows Gaming PC, Can you set Emulation Station to show an icon on the desktop so I can just kick it off there and not go into steam every time I want to play?
I followed this video and installed it all on my ROG Ally (windows 11) a few month back and I've had no issues. Yet, I am coming back to it now, to try and install in on my windows 10 desktop and the file is a .bat file now so I dragged it into CMD but it won't download "dependencies". I went to the website and it said install them all separate, so I did that an Di have nothing. It doesn't start to install or anything 😢
While EmuDeck is a great piece of software, I just can't get myself to use it. I like Emulation Station DE but only being able to just Screenscraper and SteamgridDB for metadata and art is too limited for my liking. I settled on Playnite since I can use multiple scraper databases.
Playnite is awesome. Once you set it up on one computer, you can easily move the needed folders to a thumb drive and place them in a different PC. Only thing left to do is to reassign the emulator and rom locations and that's it. To save on time reassigning rom locations, I just have a ROM folder that I transfer between PCs and I always place it in the same spot. This saves that part of the process.
is this still behind the Patreon or has this been released yet? Also, is there a way to manually add a rom from ES directly to steam? or does it have to be done through Rom Manager?
