38 always skated streets, we got an incredible concert skatepark built in December. I love it but never learned to carve front side. It feels awkward but these tips are very helpful.
I decided for some bizarre reason to learn to skateboard when I turned 60. No desire to do tricks. I just want to do functional riding. I am just getting to the stage where I can get around a mini bowl - not pretty but I am getting there. I keep coming back to this video. Much appreciated.
What are you riding on your trickless journey? I'm 23 and don't plan on doing many tricks either, got a longboard now I'm looking into a cruiser /mini cruiser
@@brenobarbosa3489 I think you were asking me? I am into bowls and transition. I ride two boards, both black label. A Vulture Club 8.88" popsicle shape with Indy 159 hollows and 58 mm 101A mini logos. And another Black Label John Lucero Street Thing 9.88" reissue with 169 indy hollows and 60 mm 101a mini logo wheels. The vulture is better for transition & the Wild Thing for bowls but not much in it, for me anyway. Good luck, but IMHA at 23 you should set your goals higher. Even at my age I am changing my mind and starting to add tricks.

Awesome Chad! Remember to loosen your trucks and stay on your heels while you lean back for frontside. Start with a big wide carve on your heels and into your fs kickturn. This will help your head to stay back into the ramp as you complete your turn and into your pump. 💙🛹💙
Hello, I'm 43 and just got back into skating, after about 30 yrs. lol. Just bought a pretty decent complete board, Enuff brand, specs, ABEC-7 bearings, wheels, 53mm 55D, bushings 95A. Regardless, I went out today, started to come back to me a little, got my foot positioning down, felt comfortable, practiced for about an hour, then wanted to learn the kickturn, thanks so much for this video, I practiced for about half hour after this video, works like a charm thanks so very much!
I am 38 and learning at the skatepark, I go very early to have some alone time. Once the other guys show up they are always so supportive. The best advice I took over from motorcycle riding is to look where I want to go, not where I don't want to go. I definitely subscribed to this channel!

Yo JB your videos are sick! I skated street style for years and got technical flip tricks down but never learned the basics for transition and bowl skating. I got bs carves and kickturns, but my frontside be lacking. I recently tried frontside early grab on the deep end of the bowl and got bodied and twisted my knee and ankle pretty bad. I totally tried to level up to fast and paid for it. It felt sick though and definitely want to learn that trick, but definitely gonna backup and work on my heel side more. Everyone was ripping at the park so I pushed for this trick way before I was ready. I pulled my early grab at the apex of my carve, got air, landed but leaned to far back and slipped out with my front foot still on the board while my back foot toe caught on the ramp and stretched way to far for my body. Thought I blew out my knee. But alls good and can’t wait to get back at it.

Great tips JB! Backside unlocked and trying for the slash grind now. Frontside still half way the transition only, but slowly getting there. After learning the half cab in flat, i applied same tips to learn it all 4 directions and rolling down banks. Then added speed and powerslide, for extra noise. Now putting it all that together while cruising around the park! Real fun! 🤪 Any tips on how to build it up to that powerslide at 00:22 of the video? Got to unlock that! 😂 Thanks!

legend , I have a question regarding front side kick turns. I just cant seem to get them haha was wondering does truck tightness play a bigger role in front side kick turns then in back side kick turns? Was just thinking it might be that but could be im looking for excuses haha
Dan! Good to hear from you! My best advice for frontside kickturn help is to stand with your back foot closer to Ollie position, balls of your foot centered on the tail. This allows for more heel leverage with less effort, as well as making it harder to lean on your toes. I like loose trucks and I weight about 160, so loose means I try to keep my kingpin nut flush with the kingpin , Being loose allows your trucks to conform to ramps as well as your body weight with leaning so it helps with skating bowls. Also depends on top speed how big the bowl is and ankle strength. If I skate vert or 10’ and over I tighten my trucks to prevent most wobbles.
how do you actually pump out of a kickturn on a QP? Because I can pump mini ramp pretty good but I just lose so much speed whenever I throw a kickturn in it. Sorry if it is explained in the video but Im not getting it (not native english speaker, a written explanation would be easier for me to understand)

6:40 towards the end of your video you do some pretty gnarly kick turns on that wall. you have any recommendations for doing kick turns without lifting your wheels and of getting that "scratch" sound effect with your wheels when you turn without doing a "kickturn". i've been skating my local bowl that has a similar wall but can't quite seem to get that "scretchy kickturn" on the wall.

Half cab kickturns are different than half cabs so it’s just a nickname since it’s the same movement without the pop. Real half cabs are done in transition and you ride up fakie and pop 180 and land fakie. On street you fakie Ollie into 180 for half cab. 💙🛹💙
JB I skate tighter trucks and really don’t want to loosen. There not super tight but in the middle I would say. Will it just be harder to learn my frontside like that? I mean I know it prob will I just like skating a tighter truck. When I was young I skated really tight. Not to tight anymore. All I want to do is skate😅. Happiest I been in a long time
Typically it’s harder with tighter trucks since the tighter they are, the more they prohibit your pivot and lean. Loosen them up a little bit (quarter turn) every once in a while to experiment and acclimate. 💙🛹💙
@@SkateparkLessons yea I loosen since I was younger and my sons board is looser and it def was easier to carve I think I will. I need to find a balance between being able to carve but the stiffness I like. Thanks I’ll do that

It really helps to lean into your heels and toes as you tictac so you can use your body weight to your advantage by leaning into your tic and then tac 💙🛹💙
Now I know that my nose 180s are called half cabs! I think those are simpler than regular 180s as I can put my weight forward with the swing, while the standard 180 needs to be done while standing still when on flat ground, and my weight is further back, making me slip out backside rather than frontside.
Idk why it never occurred to me to turn my shoulders and build that momentum like that during kick turns.. that's the thing about skating it's like sometimes you figure it out and other times once your told how to do it it's like how did I not know that.
Front foot behind the front bolts, back foot on the tail, heels and toes matching equally on your board so the same amount of heels and toes are hanging off both side of your board. 💙🛹💙
I actually went straight back out after watching this video and consistently nailed it. I was trying to swing around using my legs - when you described swinging your shoulders around until they match your feet then locking and going with the momentum it was a game changer. The videos work wonders, can’t thank you enough!
I actually can’t thank you enough. Incorporating the body goes where the head goes advice is giving amazing control and accuracy. What a tip! Even switch is going well.
I took my kick turn to a ramp on Saturday - the shortest smallest ramp.. - which I can ride up and down.. - I don't actually know how - but I ended up with three technical dislocations and a fracture - with my foot facing the wrong way.. and this morning have two pins going through each ankle to the other ankle and have been told I should never skate again..
I’m sorry to hear that, skateboarding can be like that, some days are the best and some days are bad but many love it so they continue to skate. I’ve shattered bones and have pins as well, perseverance is the goal. Heal up 💙🛹💙
Great question! There are many reason that all work together. Its how you train your head and body to lean back frontside so your body weight stays in the ramp. It’s how you follow the rainbow shape on the ramp, it helps you keep your head back and body in the ramp so you can pump easier down the ramp and so you can follow path that a ball would take/ path of least resistance. That rainbow shape is everything when carving and as you get better your kick turn will get tighter and your pivot point will increase on the heel of your back foot. 💙🛹💙
For some reason I can barely do a kickturn on a ramp and it's tricky to do just on flat ground BUT I can half cab after coming back down an 8ft in fakie or really any speed ive never been going to fast In fakie that I couldn't do a clean as half cab. Maybe it's due to street skating that I find it hard to do a kick turn on a ramp and it annoys the crap out of me that it's to tricky for me 😂 I'll get there I'm pre fresh at skating parks. And havnt skated at all in bout 12 years (been skating again now for bout a month or 2) ain't like riding a bike that's for sure haha

I've learned that it's easier for me to do a frontside rather than a backside. Riding goofy wouldn't have anything to do with that is it??? Or am I just weird??? Lol

I'm two weeks into skateboarding, and this is my fav video so far. Thanks for the clear and simple instructions!
I've been working on kick turns a lot lately. Definitely gonna start getting more comfortable with frontside kick turns now
Awesome Chad!
So glad it helped you. 💙🛹🙌🏽🛹💙
I am 38 and learning at the skatepark, I go very early to have some alone time. Once the other guys show up they are always so supportive. The best advice I took over from motorcycle riding is to look where I want to go, not where I don't want to go. I definitely subscribed to this channel!
Well you just found a big time motorcycle enthusiast and skateboarder! You are exactly right. Be aware of your surroundings before you go and look to where you want to go before you get there.

Great video! What's your board setup in this one?
Manak Skates JB pro model, Ace 44s, switch supply ceramic bearings, grip and hardware, smoothie 54 classic wheels

Omg!! I have been doing half cabs the entire time and didn't know it was a trick, I just considered it an extremely late kickturn.
Half cab kickturns are different than half cabs so it’s just a nickname since it’s the same movement without the pop. Real half cabs are done in transition and you ride up fakie and pop 180 and land fakie. On street you fakie Ollie into 180 for half cab. 💙🛹💙
Great video!
Thanks Jonny 🙏🏽

I need help with switch kick turns!!!!! I did a little one today but it's super awkward
Haha don’t we all! Switch is tricky, need to force yourself to lean into your pump out 💙🛹💙
Now I know that my nose 180s are called half cabs!

7 days skating.. drop in done. Shove it done. Ollies getting better. Kick turns making me want to smash my head repeatedly against a lamppost 😂
Good job! Remember to lean in and pump to where you want to go. “Body goes where the head goes” 💙🛹💙
Heal up 💙🛹💙

Really hard to stop my arms from swinging even on backside!
I know the struggle! Use your head instead of swinging your arms. Lean into your turns 🛹🙌🏽🛹

Why is it important to put weight on your heels when doing frontside kick turns?

Not me practicing in my apartment, full gear on 😂

I've learned that it's easier for me to do a frontside rather than a backside. Riding goofy wouldn't have anything to do with that is it??? Or am I just weird??? Lol
I wouldn’t say you’re weird but it’s more rare. You actually have a major advantage! Most people struggle with frontside so work on backside to match frontside and you’re all set! Thanks for your support and please help me share this channel with your friends so I can help more people. Thanks 💙🛹🙏🏽🛹💙
Everytime I try anything in skateboarding, I just slam onto concrete. don't mean I'll stop trying but my goodness I didn't realize just how bad I could mess up
Just take it slow and steady at first 💙🛹💙
I can do half cab turn but cant kickturn on ramp
Keep your head towards the bottom of the ramp while you kickturn your weight into your front foot and press out of your landing as you ride down the ramp.
