      You are amazing. I’m picking it up after a 20 yr hiatus. When I stopped I was doing tricks off of garages and flipping into grinds. All that experience and yesterday was like being a new born colt but with 43 years of injuries to mitigate, lol. I can’t even imagine doing this right now if I hadn’t already done it before. This is a good tip. It also provides a mental benefit: when my back foot is in the pocket, I am more committed to the movement because it's harder to step off the board. It forces me to get creative to complete the rotation instead of just bailing.

    I just learned about the importance of the pocket for the shuvit. My pivots are a mess and I understand the hip and shoulder motion, but I just knew my foot placement was off because I keep putting too much pressure on the tail and accidently propping the board up too far... causing my hips to know pain. Always on my right side ;~; This is it what I needed to know! Thanks!

    Not sure I had seen this one before but it popped up in my fred and I watched it hanging up wet clothes in the washing room. It’s definitely true that you get much more control if you sort of lean into almost pinching the trucks on a kick turn. Like the difference is huge. You can even slow down the turn considerably like this while still keeping control.

    makes sense! i have noticed that i intuitively do pivots in my natural stance (goofy) with my back foot in the middle or even sometimes top of the tail, because i feel like i can react faster that way, but when i ride switch i do them with my back foot on the pocket because i am more insecure riding like that and i feel like that way i can go slower and more controlled! Hopefully i get to the point riding switch that i feel just as confident tho :P one day!

    Great info. Not sure if you have videos on troubleshooting skateboards. An issue I have on my new board is only 3 wheels touch down. Skateboard shop said when the bushings break in it should fix. 🤞

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do have a similar video about how I ruined my bushings. Bushings can become squished down on one side if you tighten them too quickly before breaking them in. I actually broke the bushing in one set of trucks, it cracked and everything. I couldn't fix that. You can wait a few weeks and see if it gets better as your break them in more. But, if your bushing is just a little compressed on one side even after they break in, I would recommend taking the bushing and spinning it around so that the compressed part faces the nose or tail. I did this for another set of bushings that I slightly compressed. It wasn't perfect, but it helped. Kind of a way to wear the bushing evenly.

      you could try leaning heavier over your front foot or pressing down a little with it to restrict it. Or, you could actually try moving your back foot even closer to the bolts. You typically will get less lift there compared to the back of the tail.

    Hi Sarah!Thank you very much for your videos! Speaking of basics, is there a way to make effective turns while pushing? I mean sometimes you just have to push but you have to make also a turn (uphill for instance). Is a 90° turn is possible while pushing? I hope my question makes sense.

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure if anything is impossible haha I've not made many sharp turns while pushing though.You can always briefly put your foot on to make the turn and then keep pushing. But, you can also experiment with your foot up higher, see if you can find a spot in the pocket to push your toes and make a sharper turn at a slow pace. I know some people who push mongo (push with their front foot) can make sharp turns because their back foot in over the bolts and just turn the board. I'm not sure though.

    Good stuff! What happens to me is that the shoulders and hips get locked and don't rotate enough, so when I end the kick turn I get twisted.
    Sometimes even get sore from the twisting, any hint how to practice to improve it?

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You might want to try stretching. Improved flexibility in your core (abs, shoulders, obliques) might help make that more comfortable. But, also trying them a little more gently might help too. Especially if you aren't used to that motion, it might just be a little muscle fatigue.

  • @JupiterJazzX
    @JupiterJazzX 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I respectfully disagree. Today I’m teaching myself tic tacs and I tried your method. One problem with turning in the pocket is a lack of leverage to kick the board up to turn. It’s possible, but not easier than doing it on the tail. I also noticed by doing with the tail I force myself to learn better board weight distribution, foot positioning, foot shifting, and more than putting my foot in the pocket. I went from someone scared of putting my back foot on the tail to someone shifting my foot into position on the tail and balancing it within minutes. By putting my foot on the tail I also conquered my fear. I found more awkward and unnatural to turn with the pocket compared to the tail.
    I’m glad this works out for you but it’s not for everyone. Cheers.

      You might want to try and put some more weight on the front foot (lean over the front foot) if you are falling back. You don't need to lift the front wheels a lot, just a little bit!

    Your vids feels like a beginner who just found out what their fuck ups are and be able to tell other beginners about it in detail and guide them into doing them properly.

    Started learning at 44... Still afraid to stand on board and tic tac. I can cruise fine in slow speed but the fear of the board disappearing under my feet while i tic tac is unbeatable...

    I think I may have intuited that being further from the end of the tail helps, but I don't know if I've tried going that far in. I'll give it a try when I'm skating next.

    Tic-tacs never quite worked for me, this tip seems to be exactly what I needed. Thank you Sarah, gonna try this tomorrow :)

    This is a bit late, but posting as a street skater who started with flip tricks and is starting to do more freestyle stuff, this is really good advice. In fact, if you watch Rodney Mullen (i.e. look up Rodney Mullen 1986), he always has his back foot in the pocket while doing freestyle tricks. That means what you're doing is right, case closed. :)

    I practiced tic-tacs using pennyboard. It was a cheat I guess
    Bcuz after 15 minute session pennyboard tic-tacing I felt more comfortable skateboarding

    Very useful advice! Soft, mellow turns are much easier in the pockets whereas fast kick turns are much easier when riding with the ball of your back foot in the center of the tail. While I may be only pressing down, I'm grabbing the edge of the tail with my heel and toes to give it some additional guidance while I'm popping. Then I'm just using my shoulders and front foot to pivot.

    So much more control, thanks. Can you do Ollies from this position, though? @SarahParkMatott

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The ball of your foot in the pocket is not a great ollie position, no. It's great for learning how to understand your board, building up some feel for pressure points and pivots, but it's not great for ollies haha You'll want to step back into a proper ollie position 😃

    a lot of my friends ask me how do i do tic tac, because it's moving fwrd fast. and it's hard for me to explain it so i the best i could say is,
    feet in the pocket, the power comes from the shoulder and move down to the feet, it's like swinging your shoulder while pumping with your back leg. man I'm so bad at explaining 😂

      Really, everything in skateboarding is so hard to explain 😂 It seems so simple, but it really so hard and complex haha

      Do you lean really far over your front foot? That can happen when you lean really far over the front. 🤔
