    Bach's music has the perfection of a crystal. Structured with a mathematical precision but like a crystal its beauty lies in the way it refracts the light.

      That's because Bach's music came directly from Heaven. There is no precedent to his or any of the composers who composed during his lifetime. It was simply a gift to humankind from above.

    This is a beautiful rendition. It is very brave indeed to tackle the piece so slowly - but in doing so, Goldstein gives it an ethereal, other-worldly quality which befits both the composer and, more pertinently, the subject-matter. There are good quicker performances out there - the one by Sandra Wright Shen is worth checking out - but Goldstein's is magical; and my favourite.

    • @dutchdykefinger
      @dutchdykefinger 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, bringing out those accents in the leading melody pulses yet keeping the rest light and floaty
      there's a way to play this, ignore the hard accents of the melody in the middle, and still be beatuful in its own right
      but that extra layer of accentuation (and syncopation) elevates it from 2 to 3 voices on what still are only 2 limbs,
      and it's a make it or break it kind of thing, if you don't get it at least a little bit right, you may aswell not do at at all, and leave it out for the 2-voice version, it sounds very abrasive very quickly when
      now i'm a sucker for darker sounding pianos like the bösenforfers, they can mask quite a bit in resonance, but on a bright piano with a strong attack that triggers without too much physical effort, this is crazy hard to get right

    Given that it's the greatest 3 and 1/2 minute piece of music ever written, and that all versions - in their own way - are created equal (some may disagree with me) one of the many things that struck me in this recording is ; He got the Myyra Hess transcription without sounding like it has hiccups. This has the best of both worlds. :)

    • @bill76169
      @bill76169 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** thanks for the validation:) Ironically Myra Hess plays with what sound like (in my opinion) sound like hiccups to me that I feel as disturbing the basic flow of the piece. And Goldstein is playing Hess' s arrangement!
      I guess I'm just a Philistine for having a problem with Hess's performance regarding the hiccup. However Hess is still far above Goldstein and among the best renditions/arrangements. As I listen more I'm getting used to what I originally complained as the Hess hiccup.

    Why?
    Because I can feel various emotions through his delicate touch.
    From time to time, I visit here, listen to his play, and question to myself
    "How can he express such a rich emotion through such a simple melody?"
    I'm looking at his hands moving smoothly on the piano.

There's character here, whole personalities that can rise, speak, and return to the heart of the piano, and the heart of the man who plays it, a language its own. Quite superb and I very much like Goldstein's tempo that helps, in my view, for me to discern the various 'voices' intermingled in the the melody, to 'sing out' and I do not at all, find it melancholy. Quite the reverse, in fact - joyful, moving and inspiring

    Perfect tempo and sonority. He is really able to capture the ethereal and heavenly tone. If only the A in the left hand was in tune! Interpretation wise, I prefer Leon Fleisher's, as his version sounds more orchestral, but they are both my favorite!

    this (and perhaps every) piece by Bach actually hard to consistently play in the correct tempo. I called this the best video I've found on youtube to perform this piece. the phrasing and intonation just perfect. In every sustain he allows a break to make the notes really spread into the room.

    I so enjoy listening to and watching this young man play this beautiful piece of music. The music is among my favorites of all time and it was what I walked down the aisle to when I married my late husband. It will forever be played in heaven.
