    @Shawn James of @My Self Reliance and I head out for some Backcountry Trout Fishing in Algonquin Park & Wild Catch and Cook. We had our work cut out for us when we decided to enter the Algonquin Park backcountry and then paddle and portage all the way back in one day. We were chasing after the elusive Brook Trout. We also had a surprise catch and both landed white fish. A bushcraft style catch and cook made for a delicious lunch and Shawn brought a wild turkey leg from a bird that he had harvested in the days prior. The food was delicious and the day was nearly perfect but we couldn't stay in the backcountry for long as we needed to paddle quite a distance back to the roads where we left our vehicles. All in, it was an amazing trip with 4 trout landed, 2 white fish, multiple smallmouth bass, which we quickly released because they were out of season, and several suckers as well, which we saw spawning in the shallows, a very interesting and welcome site. Additionally, we saw a great blue heron rookery on an island with many seagull nests in the area as well. It felt perfect and pristine in the Algonquin backcountry this day and this was likely because the travel restrictions into the park that had been put into place during the COVID-19 outbreak had reduced human activity and has made the animals less wary and the fish more plentiful. As bad as the COVID outbreak has been, I feel blessed to have witnessed the Algonquin Backcountry in such a state. Please check out Shawn James channel and watch his version of this adventure.

    very nice touch end of the video..our side many areas still remain closed..many areas only a day hike..and some areas but not many open for hike and backpacking..and we backpackers do rules join as a small group..but hikers they go big sized group..hope everything gets better as in short time so we can do some trip together.

    Beautiful! My husband has a standing joke where he always says there’s trout in that their stream you just have to walk down the hill and catch it! He says that for every river, creek, or stream we pass! He fished in Silver Valley and on the Ausable River in Michigan.
    Love you and Shawn’s adventure!

    Epic video. The scenery was amazing as was the fishing. Couldn’t of picked a greater guy to spend the day with than Shawn. Fun to watch both versions and yes Jim it’s about quality time outdoors not who catches the most fish. Lol. Really appreciate all the hard work and time that goes into making these. Probably cuts your day in half with all the filming but was spectacular to watch. Thanks🥰

      Thanks a lot, ya the filming does take up time and I’ve learned to try to shoot in the fly as much as possible and it sort of becomes mechanical after a while. It’s the batteries and charging them out there that are the biggest pain on longer trips.

    Hi Jim. Love this video. Waited a long time for another Algonquin canoe trip. Love your comment about Shawn's early May swim. True, so true. We ladies do love watching Shawn strut his stuff. But you're no slouch you know. You're our superman out there who can do it all. Can't wait to see the finished long house and maybe a corn roast with all the families camping out there. That would be awesome--love it when the whole gang gets together.

  • @jks49
    @jks49 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Is this the normal time of the black fly season? Here in Finland my neighbour was visiting his cabin quite lately and he told me about the aggressive black flies. I think this is unusually early but the winter was quite unnormal in the southern part of Finland. Practically no snow and pretty warm.
    You caught 3 beautiful whitefish! That fish is regarded the very best fish. It is a typical Christmas fish eaten salted. In the summertime it is also smoked and the sami people in Lapland makes the whitefish soup, which is excellent. Have you fished the whitefish using the fly fishing? I think the whitefish is a difficult fish to catch because it's jars may break so easily.
    You have a very beautiful and rich nature in Canada! I enjoy seeing your videos!

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, this time of year the black flies are particularly bad. They’re not as bad as last year though, thankfully. And yes, the fish was delicious, we were surprised to have caught the white fish. I haven’t caught flyfished for whitefish unfortunately. Maybe one day. Thanks a lot for watching!

Too bad you didn't get further in; if you were going to the lake I think you were, you're right about it holding trout. We did a day trip there from our camp and my friend caught two beauties there 18" and 19". We had them for dinner back at the camp that night.

    I used to use small gold or silver spinners with a worm, depending if it was sunny or overcast. If it was a rocky bottom and I got hung up, I put the splitshot at the very end of the line to sacrifice. If on a lake I could troll, a lake clear spinner and muddler minnow fly or worm worked well. If crawfish got your line hung up and you could get them out, the white meat part of the tail was good bait for brook trout. I left a bit of exoskeleton to keep it on the hook. I have a small collapsible handle foldable net for trout that would fit in a pocket, plastic frame. Not sure if they are still available.

      Awesome, that a lot! Ya, it’s a great Lake. I haven’t been there for years but it’s only a hit 45 mins from my place so I think I’m going to go back more often

    It looked a bit snaggy with those logs in the stream bed. Bring out the big guns, worms. Joe Robinet would have just reached down and grabbed those fish with his teeth. no need to land on the shore. beauty of a day to paddle, so calm.

    I dream to have either one of those canoes before I retire. I'm not a monster like Jim, so I'd probably go for the lighter Swift model. Another great video!

    Hey Jim, a couple of questions and a suggestion:
    1. What size kayak paddle you running in the canoe?
    2. Have you thought about running an anchor system at all for these fishing-specific trips?
    3. You should fabricate a removable rod holder deck, would mitigate having to hold your rod in your teeth, and help with trolling. It would be a good video. Google "bwca forums rod holder clamps" and you'll see some good examples.

      Ya they are beauties, I think I have an amazon link under gear list in my description. You may be able to order off Werner’s site too. MEC carries them in Canada too.
