WILD WEATHER on 5-Day Solo Spring Camping Trip! -8ºC
มุมมอง 96K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
This 5-day spring solo canoe trip in Algonquin Park had some pretty wild weather! I hope you enjoy coming along. I had some new equipment on this trip, including a new Esquif Prospecteur 15 canoe. At 60 lbs, it's double the weight of my Swift Prospector 14' - but it allows me to carry a lot more gear, and it's made out of a very durable T-Formex layup. My route was: Tim River Access, Tim Lake, ...

I fell though the ice winter camping alone… -15ºC

This was a late-February solo winter camping trip in Ontario, Canada. The region had just gone through a deep-freeze for several days. The previous night's temperatures had dipped down to around -30ºC. Despite this, I tried to remain cautious. Before heading out I surveyed topographic and satellite maps of the area to help identify the locations of the bodies of water I would come across. What ...
Winter Camping Alone near WOLVES! -10ºC

This was one of the most incredible nights I have ever spent camping in the wild. It started off as a warmer-than-usual February day for this part of Ontario, Canada. The temperatures were set to dip back down to around -10℃ overnight, and I had approximately 4kms to cover to reach my intended camping location. I set off midday in the warm sun, quickly shedding layers of clothing to avoid getti...

This is the first canoe trip I ever documented by video. My goal was simply to better capture this adventure for myself, as in the past I had only taken pictures during my wilderness adventures. A year later, I decided to upload this video to TH-cam. The filming and editing leave a lot to be desired but the adventure was a fun one! I'm never in a rush to get out of the Algonquin lol. Beautiful vid, tx!!
Neither am I! Thank you!

I don't think I impress anyone with my "cooking" 😂
Hi, Thanks for the video. It was very useful. I have a question: Which system can call SAR if the user is unconscious and he is out of mobile networks. Garmin watch + inreach can not, told by Garmin dealer, because the user has to push the sos button on the inreach device or on the watch. He told also that neither Apple 14 or newer phone paired with an Apple watch can not do it, because they need in 50% mobile network also to know user's position. Do you confirm it? Is there a solution for this possible issue?
We were thinking of doing the Brent Run next year. Loved your video, really puts it into perspective. Those Wolf and Moose encounters were so incredible! Thanks for sharing this.
Awesome! Yeah it turned out to be a very cool trip. Glad you enjoyed!
Gg ❤
What an awesome part of the world you live in. The beauty, the wildness and the emptiness with awesome campsites. I live in the most beautiful area of England but I envy the solitude that you find. It is a totally different experience in a densely populated landscape. I look forward to more of your adventures. For solitude I flee to Scotland with my kayak even then it is hard to find.
I certainly don’t take it for granted Ian. I’m very grateful to have such incredible wilderness areas to explore. Although you may not be able to find the same kind of solitude, England and Scotland most definitely have some incredible places to paddle as well! That being said, you should definitely come experience the wilderness here at least once! Cheers!
@@kevinthewild I love the West coast of Scotland and I even managed four days without seeing another person on Loch Morar. I love the campsites that you have there in Canada. It is wild camping or busy campsites with caravans and camper vans in Scotland. In England apart from the high fells wild camping is mostly forbidden. We still live under a feudal system where the aristocracy own most of the land and prevent access. I would love to visit Algonquin. It is my dream destination. Love your videos look forward to more.
Awesome thanks for sharing..
That was some impressive paddling. Awesome!
Thank you!
Great video as aways! What kind of pan is that?
Thank you! It's the updated ceramic coated GSI Bugaboo pan. Mine is the 8 inch size.
Thanks for that! Looking forward to your next adventure! @@kevinthewild
Drones are not allowed in the park. Video forwarded to ON Parks for their review. There’s a reason they’re not allowed. You G-damned TH-camrs make your own rules I guess - anything for views I guess.
Yes, Benadryl knocks most people out
Just saying hi. Love the videos. Just found you this week.
Thanks Todd! Glad to hear! Cheers!
Nice Trippin man. Im looking at some OldTown canoes. Had a 15' old glass one. I want more space so a 16' is what im looking at. Cheers & enjoy those Coffee Crisps. 😎✌
Recent subscriber. I love your channel but you need more videos 😊. Hope to see more of your amazing adventures.
Thank you Dina! This year has been very busy, but you can expect two or three more videos from me for this season 😊
@@kevinthewild I'm so glad to hear that!😊 You have a very similar camping style to myself, as far as trying to keep food prep simplified. Currently, I mostly camp with my kayak, but definitely want to do more canoeing to get more remote with portaging. I'll be starting up a camping channel soon on my Dina's Tripping channel. I have so much footage and a new drone to test out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated? Hope you will consider following as well. 🙏🌿🌞
Hey Kev, love your videos. Ive seen you use a couple different boat setups. Ive been looking for a similar setup using a double bladed oar. What kind of seat does this boat use?
Thanks Matt! This was a Swift Keewaydin 15 with a regular canoe seat. They also offer it with a pack seat. In my opinion this is one of the best solo canoes for lake travel. Very fast, especially with a kayak paddle.
An extraordinary trip with breathtaking scenery. Fantastic job, congratulations, and keep it up!
Thank you!
I’m a recent subscriber as well as a seasoned canoeist in the Algonquin park. I’m currently recovering from reconstructive ankle surgery and enjoying your adventures to some of the area I’ve visited . I’m getting on in years (70) but still hope to visit again with my grandchildren, it is a special place. The fishing there is challenging, I had success after some local knowledge to use salted minnows with minnow rigging. Continued success and good health !
Thank you for the kind words! I wish you all the best with your recovery, and that you'll be able to visit the park again next year with your grandkids. Those are memories they will never forget.
Thanks for doing all the paddling, 😉😆 Great trip. Nice Camera work.
Glad you enjoyed 😄
Nice Dude. I so miss my 15' canoe & trippin 😎🐾🍁🍂☕🛶
Time to get yourself another one 😄
@kevinthewild absolutely. I'm on the south west coast of BC. Born & raised here since 1966. Adventure Canoeing is almost limitless. Cheers ✌️
Great filming - There was a single Tree on a small island on OSA i photographed in the 90s wonder if it's still there !
Thank you! It's been a year since this trip so I can't remember if I saw that tree or not.
Another great video. Enjoyed it al lot, thanks for that 🍻 I’m ordering a Prospecteur 15 of my own for solo use here in Australia (in olive with wood trim) at the moment. It’s been good to watch you put one through its paces, seems ideal for my purposes. First time I’ve seen one with the second seat removed. Looks like it really opens the boat up for storage. Thinking I’ll be doing that with mine when it comes 🤔
Glad to hear that you enjoyed the video Scott! That’s a beautiful colour and trim combo for your Prospecteur! Olive green is my favourite colour. If you will be primarily using it solo, removing the front seat allows you to trim the boat really well by giving you room to put your pack up front. I definitely recommend it. Enjoy your new canoe!
@@kevinthewild hey mate, thanks a lot. Can’t wait to have a go at doing the sort of stuff you (and your compatriots) are doing. These sort of canoes haven’t had a big following here so far, but that’s definitely changing as the subtle advantages of them are becoming understood. I wish I’d learned more about them years ago 🤷♂️ Anyway, keep up the great work. I think I’ve now paddled over most of your waterways there with you now 🍻
Did you do any damage to your knee? What were the injuries
They didn’t seem like the friendliest but I guess it’s a serious job. Grateful for all who are first responders.
Awesome video! Love your style!
Thank you!
What an awesome video, thanks for that 🍻 I’m just about to get into canoeing here in Australia. Don’t quite have the sort of spectacular scenery you guys have there, but still pretty nice. I’m about to put down a deposit on an Esquif Prospecteur 15, which should arrive in December 🤗
Another awesome adventure and a great video 👏😊
Thank you!! 😊
Hi Kev! Incredible video!! My daughter and I did a lot of camping at Two Rivers and Pog…. Just did canoe day trips. Seeing your videos I wish I would have been more adventurous! Algonquin is so beautiful!! I guess the restaurant at Canoe Lake was closed… we always had a nice meal there! Looking forward to more videos!!
Great
Ive always used three man tents. Plenty of room for you, gear ,boots ect and even room for another person if needed
Great video
Thanks!
Thank you for not fishing .
Thanks for sharing this and congrats on a great accomplishment. Stunning country 🙌
Thank you!
That's how you know you're living life
I don't even canoe, but I love seeing videos of people who do. Especially those who live in Canada. The landscapes are magnificent, whatever the season. The tranquility of nature, the beautiful campsites, the difficulty of the terrain, the portages and the good food by the campfire! It is with great pleasure that I will follow your upcoming adventures Kev.
Thank you for the kind comment Melanie. I'm so glad to hear that you enjoy watching my videos 😊. I certainly enjoy making them!
Great stuff! This makes 5 channels I've come across that were all filming in the same area at the same time. I wonder who's next. Lol
Thanks Wayne! Yup I've seen several of the others. I enjoyed seeing how their trips unfolded. Funny coincidence 😄
Great video! What is the brand of the knife you were using?
Thank you! It’s a KaBar knife.
Some of the best canoe camping content out there!! Awesome videos
Thank you!
My son and I would like to document and post some of our trips on you tube. Can you recommend a beginner camera that would be suitable for this. Much appreciated.
This is an amazing journey, very well captured with great shots and video production. Well done. Keep on exploring and creating my friend. ❤
Thank you!
Those wolves are the coolest thing to hear in Algonquin Park. I’ve bin in the park many times, but never heard them. Thanks for sharing!
They definitely are! I’ve been lucky to hear them many times now. It’s always special.
Great cinematography, amigo! Greatly enjoyed the video, headed there tomorrow for 4 days off the radar...appreciate the video as a 'pep talk!'
Enjoy your trip!
Are you doing anymore trips in algonquin sense your spring trip. ? I must say you do some amazing trips.
Thanks Robert. I have done and will do a few more trips this year. Life is busy though and I don’t want to rush the videos. Cheers
Aw the call of the loon..just so calming to hear..nice video friend😊
Thank you 😊
The portage was 4km one way? Did you carry everything in one trip? If you went back and forth twice that time is impressive!
I think it was about 3760m if I recall. Yes I only did single carries on this trip.
I'm completely new to backpacking and even solo day hiking, and it almost felt silly to pay the money for an InReach, but after seeing a couple of videos about people needing to hit the SOS I decided to take the plunge. Obviously the hope is that you spend the money and never ever need it. But I can't imagine needing it and not having it.
It most definitely is a worthwhile investment. Good luck on your future adventures!
This is 2024 and you should not hike without a Personal Locator Beacon, (sold on Amazon) or a Garmin Inreach. These devices alert rescuers of your problems. These devices turn a search and rescue into a rescue. If you have the money, I think Inreach is the best because it allows for two-way communication with the Garmin Response Center. However, signaling an SOS does not mean a rescue will come promptly. As shown in this video, helicopters need good weather in which to fly. 1)You are only one step away from spending the night in the forest. 2) Always tell someone where you are going and when you are expected back 3) Make sure they know to call search and rescue if you are not back in the time frame. 4)Make sure when you hike you have adequate equipment to spend the night or two if you are forced to do so. 5)Take adequate food. 6)Purchase rescue insurance. It is easy to have safe Hikes in the National/state forests and Parks. Good luck
Great! Thank you
Dude you did it again. I am so there with you, and that is a gift to be able to pull people into your experience. Thank you so much. And you listened to your Subs and included fishing. Bonus!
Ive watched most of your algonquin videos and i love them! Its so cool to see all the wildlife up close! Great videos man, Keep it up!
Thank you!
Wow! Inspiring! You are very tough:) I did a week of solo canoeing in west Tasmanian wilderness but took it slower... Great video!
Very cool! Thank you!
Great video! Loved the maple lollypop contrasted with the huge knife! Thanks for the lol!
😄
Kev, I really enjoy your channel. I just turned 70 last month. I love to hike and camp. But, I couldn't handle a portage with my worn shoulders and knees from playing sports my entire life. A hike I can handle but I couldn't imagine carrying a canoe on my back for a mile or so. Five portages in one day? I give you props for that. These are really good videos. We feel like were along for the ride. That's best complement you could get. Video work is awesome too. I'm not good at the video kind of stuff so it makes me appreciate the videos even more. Nice work.
Thank you for all the kind comments Nicholas. I'm so glad to hear that you have been enjoying coming along with me.
