4 Jackals confront an African Wild Cat and her baby | Extremely rare | Kruger National Park

  • In January of 2018, we encountered a very interesting and unique sighting. Four jackals had surrounded an African Wild Cat mother and her baby. This standoff continued for a few minutes until the mother ran away from her baby. We believe she did this to distract the jackals and protect her baby. The baby then crawled under the bush as shown in the video and was safe from the jackals. The jackals then eventually gave up and carried on into the bush.
Taken in the Kruger National Park Reserve South Africa.

Typical feline behaviour. The mother always tries to run away from the danger working as a decoy to scatter the other predators away from their cubs. Lionesses even do it with elephants, cape buffalos, hyenas, and trespassing male lions.

If it was trying to lure I would say it do much more to get their attention other than just slipping away silently thru the under growth.

David Andrew If you know how a cat would do, one of it they never leave their little ones behind. They’d find a way to lure the threats away from their babies so they can find a safe place to hide. That’s just the anatomy of a cat mom, no matter how big or small, they’d always react the same way.

@@davidandrew6347 a human being trying to make a cat think like a human being is bound to make the wrong inference from facts. The cat understands the ecosystem better than you do; she knows what works. And in this case, what she did worked. To say a cat will bolt away and abandon her kittens is contrary to the nature of pretty much every animal in existence. You are evidently not a mother; otherwise this won't have occurred to you. Only men can think like you do.
The cat was not panicked for an instance; because she knewshow to deal with the situation. And she did. Even the kitten understood what to do; hide. And that worked too. When the cats were just in the spot and "left" it in full vision of the jackals, their scent (the jackal's keenest sense)is of no use: too much white noise.
This is a good wildlife video illustrating the superiority of the cat's predatory instincts compared to all other mammals; which works both for offense and defense. If you want to really get into this, watch videos showing the confrontation between the bigger cats and their relatively smaller peers -- e.g. leopard v. cheetah, or Lion v. leopard.

This wildcat was smart and cheated on the jackals, then returned to his kitten. He would have had a hard time defending the little one against the four of them. Herself easily, but in the meantime the kitten would have been in danger. In the end, we see that a single jackal dared not to attack the kitty. Maybe she was afraid the mom would come back suddenly, or because she wasn’t sure which one it was, the kid, or the adult.

If the jackals got any closer, they would create a distraction to separate mom and baby, going right for the weaker one, her baby. As a mother and a predator herself she knows this, that's why she created a distraction by running so the threat would leave her baby and follow her. Once she's got them far enough away and they eventually move on she will go back for her baby, calling it to come out of hiding as it's safe. Luckily the jackal that was around her baby moved on. In cases where prey is a mom and baby, the predator/s will create a distraction and separate them, then go for the baby. Cheetah moms do the same as this African Wild Cat mom, they will create a distraction while their babies run and hide, then have the predator, usually lions as they want to eliminate other predators, chase her in the opposite direction away from her babies. She will go back to where she left her babies and call for them to come out of hiding. It's the strong maternal instinct for predator mothers to protect their young in a way that yields the highest chance of survival in situations such as this one.
