- Seventy-six-year-old Cuban street musician Miguel Del Morales, known as El Gallo (The Rooster), travels around Cuba with his guitar, making music in the homes of friends, in bars, and on street corners, in courtyards and stairwells. His rich voice, colored by a lifetime of cigarettes and rum, weathered by the sun and rain, bespeaks the joys and sufferings of his countrymen. An urban troubadour, Del Morales has been called "a living memory of Cuban bolero."

I’m only 17 years old, but listening and watching this documentary it makes me feel as if I’ve lived hundreds of years. It shocks me to think that this has been made in 1999, I can barely believe such a good of quality documentary with so much soul and life could’ve been filmed in that time. My generation gets taught that things like camera and computer are very new. But watching this it seems as if its all timeless. Thank you for showing this to the world!

My 4th great grandfather name was Goliah; He was born in Cuba in 1800. Both of Goliah's parents were born in Africa. Many Cuban roots is Africa. Goliah moved to South Carolina, USA where my 2nd great grandfather Squier Sullivan was born. I don't speak Spanish, but I feel the spirit of my Cuban roots when I look at this video! "Thank You"!
20:32 is my favorite scene. An old lady starts singing Veinte Anos, one of the most popular Bolero songs in Cuba. She also beats Habanera rhythm with a clave by herself. No band but only solo. Not fantastic at all but she looks beautiful and sounds great.

Una de las películas mas maravillosas que jamas he visto en toda mi vida... yo soy un español nacido en Africa más de 70 años, trabajando y viviviendo en Amsterdam, pero el sueño de mi vida sería vivir algún dia en Cuba, mi corazón es hispano siempre y por la vida y toda mi pasión siempre fue por el mundo hispanohablante... Un mundo pleno de gente pura y natural, gente viva sin complejos, sin sentimientos falsos, sin hostilidad y complejos de superioridad... gente sin obediencia ciega por las normas y las reglas estrictas de Europa... gente que ama la vida, gente que quiere vivir, gente que ama la felicidad, amistad y sinceridad... a través esta película maravillosa he conocido el espíritu autentico de este continente maravillosa y de la gente al dentro... dicumental tan tan sincero y con riqueza humana y cultural que no conocen limites o fronteras... muchas gracias Karim por todo, lo aprecio mucho, siento que esta película hermosa me ha emocionado la vida... He tenido lagrimas en los ojos en varios escenas de la película... no tengo palabras... un documental pleno de artistas talentosos de esa hermosa Cuba libre, linda y maravillosa... pero hay que jamas olvidar el gran artista que ha grabado y realizado esta masterpiece... todo mi respeto Señor, saludos de los Paises Bajos.

Um documentário é uma peça ficcional ao assisti-lo você talvez dirá: A vida não é bem assim, como se pode ser feliz em meio a pobreza? E daí eu te digo, não é ficção, é tudo verdade. A alegria esta em todas as ruas de Cuba. Ainda que um sistema covarde tente matar de fome um povo que se empoderou, este povo liberto não sucumbe. Não existe fome maior que a fome da alma. Cuba é Feliz. Vão e vejam com os seus olhos! E não confundam pobreza com miséria. A pobreza é a falta de alimento na mesa de uma criança, a miséria é uma criança dormir na rua e você passar por cima sem ao menos notá-la.

On a personal note, I travelled to Cuba around 15 years ago. We traveled the country, Havana to Santiago de Cuba to Pina del Rio. This doc brought back lovely memories.
