Looks awesome! My only suggestion - as someone who installs countertops for a living - don't silicone ONTO the cabinet then place the stone on it, rather put the stone in place then go up from inside and silicone where the stone meets the cabinet walls. This way, you're not tearing apart your cabinets if you want to change your countertops in the future. You'd just simply run your knife across the silicone, much like you did when cutting the silicone away from the splash and countertop in the beginning of the vid.
We have laminate in our kitchen. We've only had it for 5 years. Looks dark and I want something lighter. Of course my husband is having a fit (can't blame him) because to take of our laminate, it will be a tough job because they glued it down tight, not just silicone where the stone meets the cabinet walls. So we are screwed in terms of tearing this out. He is afraid it will not only hurt our new cabinets but will destroy the bottom part of our backsplash tile. I wish someone knowledgeable could help us remove it. Also have an 8' x 3' island. My husband thinks adding quart to this length will cost up to $5,000 just for a quartz or Solid Surface put on. I just don't what to do at this point.
@@theresahemmer3725 You can also install new laminate over existing laminate. My friend's mother had it done on the laminate that was installed in the 90's. The new laminate was a replica of marble. Looked beautiful.
@@theresahemmer3725 You can paint over the laminate. There are tons of videos on TH-cam to show you how and what paint to use. Or you can epoxy the counter tops and again there are tons of videos on TH-cam to show you how and what to use.

Thank you for telling your viewers about the waste factor and care of natural stone/ quartz. And FYI viewers, sealing is a very simple process, like cleaning your counters so don’t let that turn you off!
I am pretty sure that quartz does not need a sealer but granite does, and yes the process is quite simple. And only needed about every 5 years or so. cheers!
Stumbled onto this channel for looking at some pointers on remodeling and after watching this very easy and simple video i have to subscribe, very well explained.
Great channel. I bought 14 linear feet of quartz for 150 dollars (i had to drive from Iowa to Illinois to pick it up) but I plan on doing this in a couple months. Thanks for the tips!
Super video. Information is top notch. Two key points you mentioned that I did not know or had forgotten: quartz matrix damaged by heat and the resale of a used house to buyers.
Yup on the counters! I'm considering buying the condo I'm renting but this is my beef. Still has original counters. So looking at alternatives for renovations.

Please guys. The countertop was installed against the tile (not underneath the tile). Just check when he puts the last drop of silicone he lifts the countertop about 2”
After researching countertops I believe the best one to use is quartzite. It's harder than Quartz and they have some really nice colors I lean towards an all white kitchen with some different marksing in the countertop. I also really like glass countertops.
Ottawa always seemed so far away but it was close enough to apply to Utah projects because of the good similarities between Canada and the U.S. We will be in Canada’s beautiful capital this year and these videos will make me feel more at home when we come there to research family roots. Thanks again Jeff for the excellent and practical advice. Why not enjoy a renovated kitchen long before you sell it. Goodbye Formica, hello quartz. Congratulations on your excellent TH-cam success. You’ve earned it, black eye and all.
Just had laminate countertops installed because of the cost differential - wish I had seen this video sooner. It may have given me the courage to try quartz.

I just ordered granite countertops. 51 sq feet, new undermount stainless steel sink, and gooseneck faucet. $4400. Not including the plumber. The charge is $500.00 to remove a butcherblock just laying on my island and 3 pieces or formica. So for about a dozen screws a $500.00 charge... hmmm Guess I will try to take it apart myself and save the money after watching this video. DO you also have a video of you removing the sink and installing the gooseneck faucet?? Excellent video, just what I wanted to see. Cheers...
That new counter top look nice, and the part on the other side of the stove was so heavy until you must have had one or two extra helpers to assist in putting it on. I love the work you did and how fine it looks.

Always enjoy your videos, 2 thumbs up. Any DIY suggestion on the leaking vinyl decking if the deck structure is good? Can we replace some materials on top of the existing vinyl instead of replacing the whole plywood and the old vinyl sheets. Your comments are highly appreciated.
I’m taking out an old Formica top and need to level the old cabinet tops a bit to be ready for quartz.... any videos on making this easier? I have a laser and levels and such. ...?
Do you generally caulk or seal the back edge of a countertop like this when it's up against tile? Seems like you'd want to prevent spills from dripping down the walls on the back and side.
You scared me about the old countertops, you’re absolutely right nobody will buy a house with old countertops, well depending on the buyers, but for good insurance I will definitely replace my countertops before I sell my home!
I just moved to whidbey island, WA and I am currently on the market to buying a house. Let me tell you those homes out there are outdate as hell and they are extremely over priced! Thanks for the video now I know how to upgrade countertop, differently going to negotiate with the price and update the 80’s tile countertops.
In most cases your counter top will not slide out that easily. The tile or whatever backsplash is there is going to overlap it and in addition to the underside screws, there is likely going to be some additional adhesive securing the counter top to the cabinets. This video shows the ideal situation.
Can you explain how you would install countertops and install an under-mount sink? I'm redoing my bathroom, is it worth it to get it professionally installed or just buy the materials and do it myself?
Hi Jeff, How do you remove old silicon caulking in kitchen/bathroom? Do you scrape it with razor? Do you soften it with a hairdryer or freeze with air can before removal? Robert
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY waiting for countertop replacement video too! :) Please show how to safely remove an undermount bathroom sink and re-install it with a new granite/quartz countertop.
Trying to decide between Quartz and Granite for a kitchen in our home that we plan on selling in about a year. I wonder if Quartz has less off cuts since it is manufactured - and therefore comes out cheaper in the end even though it's generally more per sq foot?
I think installing quartz can be a DYI, yust gotta do a sink over the counter. If the kitchen has no turns then its no problem at all. Love your videos, I have a lot of experience but pick up something from every video.
Great video Jeff. We are looking to do the same renovation at our home. Was wondering, we have a long bar counter that sticks out from the framing by about 4-6 inches. Would we need to support the quartz with some brackets underneath? This counter gets stuff piled on it and gets leaned on. How should we safely attach the countertop?
My laminate countertop is shot. I’m thinking wood/plywood with a wood edge strip. I’ve read about Waterlox to finish it. Worth it? Trying to save money and we’re not selling anytime soon. Thanks
I have a question, which is what size do I need to cut in a countertop, to fit a sink? Dimension of sink shows 23x18 for cutout, so do I need to cut exactly that size hole or leave out a 16th or 8th of an inch, all around so the hole is slightly bigger than the sink? I will be ordering the countertop and need to provide dimensions.
Thanks for the video - very informative. First time installing Quartz over new cabinets - should I install plywood first on cabinets before I install the quartz and how do I secure my under mount sink? Thank u
yes to the plywood if you are using the 3/4 inch and no if you are using the 1 1/4 inch. I like to secure my sink with structural silicone. If you like to fill heavy pots in the sink then install a brace under the sink to help carry the weight.
Hello Sir . Question for you . We are getting Quartz top installed this week and we going with under mounting sink. Does Quartz top can hold big sink ? 36 inches to be specific. Thank you for help. Great videos. I learned a lot as a new home owner.
Quartz countertops can definately fit a 36 inch sink. Especially since your undermounting it. As long as your cabinet is big enough to accept the sink. You will be good. The quartz itself is really strong so with a 36inch sink opening as long as your not standing on the countertop itself(which you should not do, or if you must stand over the gable of the cabinet so your weight is supported by the cabinet and not the stone.) It will be way more than strong enough.
I actually bought an undermount sink and a faucet and want a new countertop that I think my husband and I can install. Can't use laminate because it's an undermount which is what I want so I don't get what I got--deteriorating countertop around the back and edges. I'm also not very careful when it comes to putting hot things or cutting on the counter. And how do you cut the holes for the faucet and sink? Who does that?
Great video. You make it look sooo easy. I want to replace my backsplash and countertops. Should I replace the backsplash or countertop first? What's the easiest way to remove a small mosaic tile backsplash? I tried several ways and it will probably take me 8 hours to do a very small kitchen. It's so time consuming ugh. Help lol
Watch the video this weekend. we do the backsplash over the existing tile. this way saves a ton of time. And you don't have to live in a mess while renovating.
Awesome!!! You're a lifesaver!! I have had my backsplash half on and half off for 3 months now. It's been so time consuming ugh!! I've tried everything. Wow I can't wait for this video. Will you be addressing if you have some wall showing and some tile :)
Not that particular situation. But you could fill the wall spaces with a little 45 min compound and let it dry overnight. Or just use 2 different size trowels to make the adjustment as you go.
question? l am putting in microwave with exhaust fan vent threw my attic , then out side.. l have a bathroom ,which l would also like to install a exhaust fan, question is can l tee them together and have only one outlet for the exhust to go out side? like l said they re fairly close.
Thanks for your vinyl plank suggestion. My outdoor Ducan vinyl deck is open air and under no cover, can the vinyl plank be used outdoor and stands for different weather and temperature? Is there any vinyl plank mainly for outdoor use? Your comments again are highly appreciated.
That is a good question for the manufacturer. I am not sure if the plank is produced for that kind of protection. I would hate to see you put good money and have it go bad.
Will I have to replace my tile backsplash when I remove the tile counter tops? The backsplash is white subway tile and has withstood the age of time and I want to keep it. The two counters in question flank the refrigerator on either side. I want to replace with quartz. No plumbing required. Each counter is 25-1/4” deep by 40-1/4” length (I measured from the top surface, which included the bull-nosing.
Hi Gabriella. in most cases if the tile was installed correctly then no it should stay on the wall and the new counters will fit underneath. all you will need to do is apply a silicone bead after it is secured in place. Cheers!
I want to raise my old cultured marble bathroom counters to 36 inches and replace with granite. Can I add inches to the top instead of the base of my cabinets? I don't want to move my cabinets.

Cheers!
Could you suggest what adhisive should I use to stick carrera marble with wood/MDF?
Hi, one question, can u give me some tips on how to redue my concrete ugly kitchen counter top???
Would you recommend marble for a counter top? Also, can marble handle heat, unlike quartz?
Is it possible if we had already installed our quartz countertops to try and re-shape the sink from an old school oval to a modern rectangle?
How many inches is the countertop overhang on the front of the cabinets?
I want to raise my old cultured marble bathroom counters to 36 inches and replace with granite. Can I add inches to the top instead of the base of my cabinets? I don't want to move my cabinets.
