Looks awesome! My only suggestion - as someone who installs countertops for a living - don't silicone ONTO the cabinet then place the stone on it, rather put the stone in place then go up from inside and silicone where the stone meets the cabinet walls. This way, you're not tearing apart your cabinets if you want to change your countertops in the future. You'd just simply run your knife across the silicone, much like you did when cutting the silicone away from the splash and countertop in the beginning of the vid.
We have laminate in our kitchen. We've only had it for 5 years. Looks dark and I want something lighter. Of course my husband is having a fit (can't blame him) because to take of our laminate, it will be a tough job because they glued it down tight, not just silicone where the stone meets the cabinet walls. So we are screwed in terms of tearing this out. He is afraid it will not only hurt our new cabinets but will destroy the bottom part of our backsplash tile. I wish someone knowledgeable could help us remove it. Also have an 8' x 3' island. My husband thinks adding quart to this length will cost up to $5,000 just for a quartz or Solid Surface put on. I just don't what to do at this point.
@@theresahemmer3725 You can also install new laminate over existing laminate. My friend's mother had it done on the laminate that was installed in the 90's. The new laminate was a replica of marble. Looked beautiful.

Please guys. The countertop was installed against the tile (not underneath the tile). Just check when he puts the last drop of silicone he lifts the countertop about 2”
Ottawa always seemed so far away but it was close enough to apply to Utah projects because of the good similarities between Canada and the U.S. We will be in Canada’s beautiful capital this year and these videos will make me feel more at home when we come there to research family roots. Thanks again Jeff for the excellent and practical advice. Why not enjoy a renovated kitchen long before you sell it. Goodbye Formica, hello quartz. Congratulations on your excellent TH-cam success. You’ve earned it, black eye and all.
I just ordered granite countertops. 51 sq feet, new undermount stainless steel sink, and gooseneck faucet. $4400. Not including the plumber. The charge is $500.00 to remove a butcherblock just laying on my island and 3 pieces or formica. So for about a dozen screws a $500.00 charge... hmmm Guess I will try to take it apart myself and save the money after watching this video. DO you also have a video of you removing the sink and installing the gooseneck faucet?? Excellent video, just what I wanted to see. Cheers...
After researching countertops I believe the best one to use is quartzite. It's harder than Quartz and they have some really nice colors I lean towards an all white kitchen with some different marksing in the countertop. I also really like glass countertops.
Yup on the counters! I'm considering buying the condo I'm renting but this is my beef. Still has original counters. So looking at alternatives for renovations.
Just had laminate countertops installed because of the cost differential - wish I had seen this video sooner. It may have given me the courage to try quartz.

I just moved to whidbey island, WA and I am currently on the market to buying a house. Let me tell you those homes out there are outdate as hell and they are extremely over priced! You scared me about the old countertops, you’re absolutely right nobody will buy a house with old countertops, well depending on the buyers, but for good insurance I will definitely replace my countertops before I sell my home!
Loved watching your TH-cam channel. Learned a lot new techniques for home improvements from you. Besides you funny and you made projects more interesting to watch.
That new counter top look nice, and the part on the other side of the stove was so heavy until you must have had one or two extra helpers to assist in putting it on. I love the work you did and how fine it looks.
Always enjoy your videos, 2 thumbs up. Any DIY suggestion on the leaking vinyl decking if the deck structure is good? Can we replace some materials on top of the existing vinyl instead of replacing the whole plywood and the old vinyl sheets. Your comments are highly appreciated.
In most cases your counter top will not slide out that easily. The tile or whatever backsplash is there is going to overlap it and in addition to the underside screws, there is likely going to be some additional adhesive securing the counter top to the cabinets. This video shows the ideal situation.

Hello Sir . Question for you . We are getting Quartz top installed this week and we going with under mounting sink. Does Quartz top can hold big sink ? 36 inches to be specific. Thank you for help. Great videos. I learned a lot as a new home owner.
Quartz countertops can definately fit a 36 inch sink. Especially since your undermounting it. As long as your cabinet is big enough to accept the sink. You will be good. The quartz itself is really strong so with a 36inch sink opening as long as your not standing on the countertop itself(which you should not do, or if you must stand over the gable of the cabinet so your weight is supported by the cabinet and not the stone.) It will be way more than strong enough.
Love your instructional videos, actually the wife does . . . because she watches them and tels me JUST FOLLOW WHAT HE DOES! Thanks, really thank you for your tips and tricks. I am sure there will be more DIY's in my near future.
Have you used this stuff? I'm looking into it now, and it looks cool! But how does it feel and how is it to work with? Can you speak to pricing as well? I can't seem to find anything on the websites I've been looking at.
I think installing quartz can be a DYI, yust gotta do a sink over the counter. If the kitchen has no turns then its no problem at all. Love your videos, I have a lot of experience but pick up something from every video.
Great video. You make it look sooo easy. I want to replace my backsplash and countertops. Should I replace the backsplash or countertop first? What's the easiest way to remove a small mosaic tile backsplash? I tried several ways and it will probably take me 8 hours to do a very small kitchen. It's so time consuming ugh. Help lol
Watch the video this weekend. we do the backsplash over the existing tile. this way saves a ton of time. And you don't have to live in a mess while renovating.
Awesome!!! You're a lifesaver!! I have had my backsplash half on and half off for 3 months now. It's been so time consuming ugh!! I've tried everything. Wow I can't wait for this video. Will you be addressing if you have some wall showing and some tile :)
Not that particular situation. But you could fill the wall spaces with a little 45 min compound and let it dry overnight. Or just use 2 different size trowels to make the adjustment as you go.
Most installers would not recommend gluing the stone to the cabinets otherwise if the top is ever damaged the cabinets could be damaged when it is removed. Instead they would have pulled out the stove and done a bead of caulk or silicone around the perimeter of the cabinet under the overhang. That way if it needs to be removed the silicone can be cut and the top lifted without damaging the cabinets. Also your comment about not getting quartz hot is incorrect, I worked in a stone shop and there were blow torches used on quartz all the time to quickly dry it off. Now I am a cabinet and counter top dealer and highly recommend quartz over granite. Granite varies in density and the lighter colors tend to chip or crack quite a bit and need repaired. Also they need sealed EVERY year or else they will stain.
Eric! to tell people that the resin does not change appearance after it gets too hot is irresponsible. We both know the torch is just contacting the surface for a fraction of a second. BTW I would suggest using a rag to dry the counter after cutting.
I love watching all of your DIY projects!! I have learned a lot from them. I had a pipe bust a few months ago it ruined that Vanity portion of the bathroom and I just want to replace the cabinet not the tops i love my quart tops that is why i chose this house over a few others i was looking at. Now that I know how easy it will be to put them back on how do i remove them with out breaking it?
Hi Jeff, How do you remove old silicon caulking in kitchen/bathroom? Do you scrape it with razor? Do you soften it with a hairdryer or freeze with air can before removal? Robert
Do you think you could do a video on installing a vessel sink and possibly just replacing the bathroom countertop and not entire vanity? Great vids btw...im repainting my bathroom right now, and its coming along amazing thanks to you!
Thanks for the video - very informative. First time installing Quartz over new cabinets - should I install plywood first on cabinets before I install the quartz and how do I secure my under mount sink? Thank u
yes to the plywood if you are using the 3/4 inch and no if you are using the 1 1/4 inch. I like to secure my sink with structural silicone. If you like to fill heavy pots in the sink then install a brace under the sink to help carry the weight.
Great video Jeff. We are looking to do the same renovation at our home. Was wondering, we have a long bar counter that sticks out from the framing by about 4-6 inches. Would we need to support the quartz with some brackets underneath? This counter gets stuff piled on it and gets leaned on. How should we safely attach the countertop?
I’m taking out an old Formica top and need to level the old cabinet tops a bit to be ready for quartz.... any videos on making this easier? I have a laser and levels and such. ...?
I know most contractors probably think plywood is impractical as a countertop, or for flooring, walls, ceilings, and so on, but I absolutely love the look. No, I don't want it everywhere in the house, (even though I have seen those videos), but there are plausible uses for it. Do you have any videos on the subject, and/or what are your thoughts about using plywood sheeting in various places around the home, Jeff? And thank you for another useful video.
A good finished cabinet grade plywood as a countertop can be quite nice with the right finish. You do need to use a drop in sink however. But great economical way of doing things. Cheers!
Hey Jeff, can you let Max know I responded to his comment in the last video. I would appreciate that. And thank you for the reply to my question. You know, eventually this channel will be too big for you to respond to every comment. Just know that when that time comes, I'll still be a faithful subscriber, even though you'll be ignoring me by then. LOL
Will do Sandy, If the channel gets that big then I will make sure to comment on all the questions at least. And of course I will always look for your comments. Cheers!
It was easy for you to remove that old counter top. However, I just did mine and my Formica counter tops were made on site. Therefore, the particle board was nailed to the cabinets and then the Formica installed over the nailed particle boards. Additionally, the counter tops were flush with the drywall. On top of that, tile back splash was installed over the counter tops - no back gaps. To make matters worse, there were two 45 degree angles plus a 90 degree in one of the counter tops. It was a continuous 12 - 13 foot top. Needless to say, it was much more difficult to remove the counter tops than the one you removed in your video. I eventually accomplished it by cutting the counter top into "jigsaw puzzle" and removing it piece by piece - but it sure took me longer than it took you. By the way, I had the new quartz counter top professionally installed. I was not about to take on that task with at 12 foot multi angled counter top. Yea, to install a 2 x 3 foot no angle rectangle top - OK, no big deal; but that was not my situation. But to be clear, I love your videos overall; it is just that my situation with the counter tops was rather different as I had about 50 s.f. to do and two of the three counter tops were multi angled and long.
Granite and quartz not that expensive if you know where to buy it. I've purchased 25" x 8' granite slabs for as little as $70 a few years ago, it maybe $150 now. For about $300 and up you have some nice eye popping choices. Completely doable for DIYs with the exception of cutouts for under-mount sinks. That you need the right tools and lots of practice.
Can you explain how you would install countertops and install an under-mount sink? I'm redoing my bathroom, is it worth it to get it professionally installed or just buy the materials and do it myself?
Thanks for your vinyl plank suggestion. My outdoor Ducan vinyl deck is open air and under no cover, can the vinyl plank be used outdoor and stands for different weather and temperature? Is there any vinyl plank mainly for outdoor use? Your comments again are highly appreciated.
That is a good question for the manufacturer. I am not sure if the plank is produced for that kind of protection. I would hate to see you put good money and have it go bad.
Trying to decide between Quartz and Granite for a kitchen in our home that we plan on selling in about a year. I wonder if Quartz has less off cuts since it is manufactured - and therefore comes out cheaper in the end even though it's generally more per sq foot?
Loved this video! Thank you so much Jeff! Hey, so would you say that quartz countertops are equally as valuable in home sale, as is granite? We're thinking of changing out the granite to quartz & wondered about solid surface materials like this. thanks!!
Granite repair can be seen and ours looks worse after the repair. They have to grind some of the stone down and the goop, used to fill the area, started coming out of the crack.
Love your videos. Thanks!! I do want to ask though, how do you remove counter tops that have grouted floor tiles on them? The condo I bought has floor tiles on I assume particle board as kitchen counters. :(
My laminate countertop is shot. I’m thinking wood/plywood with a wood edge strip. I’ve read about Waterlox to finish it. Worth it? Trying to save money and we’re not selling anytime soon. Thanks
Holy crap! I came across one of your videos when looking for something specific I needed for renos I am in the midst of, then started binge watching because they are amazing. I just heard you say 'Ottawa granite pro'. Are you in Ottawa, Ontario? If so..we are neighbours! That shocked me because what are the chances of that?? Too funny!!
Now I don't know if I am imaging it, but you look familiar. Wondering if I've seen you at the home depot in Kanata where I've been about 30 times in the last 4 months (not even joking. I've really been there that much lol. Though it's probably just from watching all your videos :D
If its 2cm its usually on top of a plywood and you can use screws from underneath but dont over screw it in and if the counter top is a 3cm you can use a pry bar from the front
It's true, I tell all new home owners to immediately change all countertops from laminate to some sort of stone. This way, not only can the owners enjoy the property more, but it also raises the value of the property if they ever decide to sell it. Don't make the mistake of doing major renovation right before you sell the property, though it'll raise the value of the property up by quite a bit, but it just makes you feel stupid for not doing it earlier so that you can enjoy it more.
I heard same that quartz is NOT heat proof. However, countertop tech recently said quartz is heatproof and also more expensive than granite. Which is it? We're going with granite as it costs less and you can place hot items on it. Tearing out our old, dated granite, which weighs a ton, the sub will do that for me and dispose of it. Kitchen here looks great!

My only suggestion - as someone who installs countertops for a living - don't silicone ONTO the cabinet then place the stone on it, rather put the stone in place then go up from inside and silicone where the stone meets the cabinet walls.
Do you have a video that covers installing a tiled kitchen counter?
Great video.. I'll be removing my bathroom laminate countertop... I already looked underneath and I think that I have located the screws - thanks!
Nice ,thank you for sharing. Do you seal the edges
Hi Jeff, How do you remove old silicon caulking in kitchen/bathroom? Do you scrape it with razor? Do you soften it with a hairdryer or freeze with air can before removal? Robert
Would have been nice to go over how to cut and install prefab slabs
Anything over 8 inches needs a support. I would consult your installer and make them tell you as a part of any warranty they deliver.
Home RenoVision DIY Thanks!
Anytime Samuel. Cheers!
Most informative video I’ve seen on this subject. Many thanks!
Cheers!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Lmao. ”I love a good fight”. Now Your a comedian? Love your work.
Great short one..those counters are sweet annnnnnd heavy.lol.. u need your own show on a cable channel
We will see Cudda, right now we are really enjoying this ride. Cheers Mate!
Great video. Love the honest advice.
Thanks Ryan, that is all you get on this channel. Nobody telling us what to say. Cheers!
If you need to update the backslash too, should that be done before installing the countertops or does it not matter?
As always, excellent advice
Trying to decide between Quartz and Granite for a kitchen in our home that we plan on selling in about a year. I wonder if Quartz has less off cuts since it is manufactured - and therefore comes out cheaper in the end even though it's generally more per sq foot?
they are actually cut in the same manner form a similar sized slab so quartz is always more expensive.
Loved this video! Thank you so much Jeff! Hey, so would you say that quartz countertops are equally as valuable in home sale, as is granite? We're thinking of changing out the granite to quartz & wondered about solid surface materials like this. thanks!!
Hi very informative how about if i have a granite counter top now & i want to replace with quartz- how would they replace the granite ?
Granite repair can be seen and ours looks worse after the repair. They have to grind some of the stone down and the goop, used to fill the area, started coming out of the crack.
Love your videos. Thanks!! I do want to ask though, how do you remove counter tops that have grouted floor tiles on them? The condo I bought has floor tiles on I assume particle board as kitchen counters. :(
My laminate countertop is shot. I’m thinking wood/plywood with a wood edge strip. I’ve read about Waterlox to finish it. Worth it? Trying to save money and we’re not selling anytime soon. Thanks
Can you pls show us how to remove the faucet in the kitchen or bathroom if they're going to resurface your countertops?
Really helpful video, thank you! How would you remove quartz countertops?
If its 2cm its usually on top of a plywood and you can use screws from underneath but dont over screw it in and if the counter top is a 3cm you can use a pry bar from the front
It's true, I tell all new home owners to immediately change all countertops from laminate to some sort of stone. This way, not only can the owners enjoy the property more, but it also raises the value of the property if they ever decide to sell it.
Don't make the mistake of doing major renovation right before you sell the property, though it'll raise the value of the property up by quite a bit, but it just makes you feel stupid for not doing it earlier so that you can enjoy it more.
crazy how many people will do just that and then move into another house needing renos.
Kitchen here looks great!
quartz is man made and uses a resin which discolors with heat. Granite is the best choice for kitchens that will be see a lot of action. Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Thank you. "Floor and Decor" techs are not guys who work in the industry.

Great information, you mention that granite can be repaired, can quartz be repaired also?
Is it easy to replace the cabinets after replacing the counter tops without affecting it?
I learned to fabricate my granite countertops. It wasn't that hard at all. Seriously, the hardest part was getting them inside the kitchen :)
I feel like there is a leveling left and right and front and back that should be done after laying down the countertop?
Nice job 👍
