  • In this video we do a deep dive into the wonderful world of the leaking vw thermostat housing. Most of these leak from the lower radiator flange connection or where they fuse the two halves of the thermostat together. Either way, if you have this engine at some point you will need to replace this part! I hope this video helped you! Stay blessed!

    Hi Johnny,
If only you were in my area, Northern Oregon coast…My dealership says I have a thermostat leak on my 2017 VW AllTrack but that they cannot tell me just how much of one. They have done all the regular maintenance on my car and this is the first time (100,000 miles) something major has come up. I have to travel 50 miles or more for any regular errands, have a second grandson about to be born 6 hrs. Away and am nervous to be on the road and have my engine shut down if the leak increases as they said could be the worst case scenario.
Is there a way to keep an eye on this until I can get it for servicing? The level of fluid was not low, by the mechanic, but they think a seal has deteriorated which is why they saw some fluid.
Any suggestions? Thanks for your videos, I don’t watch TH-cam much, my husband and sons do all the time. I’ve subscribed to your channel so I can learn about my car now that it is older.

Mrs. Silkwood, first I would like to thank you so much for watching my video, for the comment and for subscribing; it means so much to me! Second congratulations on another grandchild such a blessing! The Alltrack is a great vehicle with a robust engine and drivetrain and with proper service should last you for many years to come. I'm not sure where yours is leaking from (usually it is from where they manufacture the two halves of the thermostat together) or how bad it is leaking so to tell you driving over 6 hours is okay would not be right. Although I have never seen an engine turn off from lack of coolant (your vehicle has a light that will tell you when the coolant is low) I can tell you that i have seen some go for many months before the repair becomes a necessity not just a suggestion. But if you do have to wait some time before getting this repair completed my only suggestion would be to keep an eye on your coolant levels once a week or every time you fill up your gas tank whichever is sooner. Your coolant reservoir is under the hood top left of the engine compartment. There is a minimum and maximum line, just make sure it is in the middle. If you need a video on where it is I can quickly make one for you and if there is anything you need to know about your car let me know!

I have a 2016 vw passat. My oil pant is covered in coolant and i cant find any hose leaking or anything. Im making a wild guess and im going to replace the thermostat housing. I think its probably that seal between the water pump and housing. Wish me luck. If you think its something else please let me know lol

Hey there, if the pan is that wet I would check where the lower radiator hose meets with the thermostat housing. It could also be the engine bracket that has your oil cooler on it! I have seen that many times as well. 😊
