Caroline Mumzie that’s why I do to my Calathe Orfiblia. My gorgeos leaves just went down to sides and it is so unhappy. Literally 2 days and the leaves are down. I keep the window closed so plant does not get cold.
This is a fantastic idea about the shells. After watching your videos for months, I finally had an orbifolia from Ikea today, so happy 🥰 straight home to watch your care video again 😊
Thank you for this, I'm a new "mommy" to a baby Calathea Orbifolia and now I know fully how to take care of her. Also, your video has convinced me to buy a Maui Queen -- what a gorgeous plant!
Stunning Calathea - and as expected - so beautifully nurtured and well kept. I've become an avid outside gardener in the last few years - but I'm just now trying my relatively nervous new hand - at houseplants - and Calatheas. I found a remarkably healthy Calathea Ornata - and a somewhat crispy leaved but in overall good condition Calathea Roseopicta - both for dirt cheap (no pun intended) - at our local Lowe's Home Improvement. We've got two kids in college so I'm on a tight budget but I've had success out in my garden with bargain plants from these kinds of places - but I do know Calatheas are fussy and finicky. I'm ready though - thanks to you and other youtube gardeners - to take on the challenge! Thanks for your lovely and helpful videos and wish me luck!
HI nice video, yeah you can use a waterfall I've a few around the house, it helps with the fengshui, I also use mirror to help get the light around the room on our UK winter days. I've had my plant for 2years, yes it got sad last winter. UK winter is so bad for these glorious plant my green pets. Thank you for sharing from the southeast
Layla uk 😱 !!!! A mirror for light !! That's brilliant !! Its so funny that I never thought of that even after seeing movies like the mummy and Indiana Jones 😎 .
My Orbifolia just sent out four big leaves. I don’t flatter myself that I can grow it as big as yours, in fact I didn’t know they got near that large. I bought it for the bathroom, and I don’t have another place to put it where it where it would fit and will live through the winter heat, so I would have to take it back to the greenhouse. Those are beautiful plants. They remind me of large hosta, which I can’t grow because of herds of deer.
I have one. She did great this year. Really booming. I had like 5 leafs last month, and now there are few more. I keep this one in pot without draining hole on bottom, and im using water from brita filter. Last year she was bad, almost all leafs had brown edges, i had no idea what kind of plant is that, so i cant fix that. This year she stands in smal window, on few books. Maybe thats why she get well ;) Now , shes really nice looking plant. :)
Thanks for teaching me how to care for my califa's did everything you instructed including changing the type of water from tap water to distilled wate,r removed spider mites moved the plant from the porch window where the sunlight is very strong in the morning and all day through irrigated the soil Etc. there has been a miraculous change in the plant in the past 48 Hours it has changed in color it's greener it stands tall and proud the leaves are much healthier looking and so, again, I thank you for your great video and I will keep you posted on tbeir progress... The Orbifolia is my favourite! Sadly, although mine looks fine and healthy it does not grow AT ALL! I've had it for 6 months or so - not one new leaf...
Mine almost died. I dont know what she want. Then i re-pot, put a mini humidifiers beside her & wait for the miracle. Miracle happened. New leaves appears, and shes getting better. Im having love-hate relationship with my calathea orbifolia.

Happy New Year, Hannah! What a coincidence! I just watched a detailed calathea care video & now here YOU are with that amazing orbifolia in a video from back in August! I'm building up the courage to get a calathea in Springtime; so, I need to do some research. Thanks for sharing! 🌾💜

I remember now. You are the gal that first introduced me to calathea's and I've been on the hunt for some for the past few days, thanks! That are breath taking. That's a great tip about the shells. I have some scattered on top of my cactus just for looks, I'll have to transfer those over. You are awesome, your house looks like a vacation spot and you are pretty:)
I currently love them all as I don't have one yet. I would say my favorite is the one you showed on your other video with the holographic like sheen over a white colored leaf with green margins I believe. Holographic is my favorite color:)
Hi thanks for sharing your nice video and wonderful information please show me how you use or make your flitted water to spray on the plants ? Will be waiting for your video on making flited water to spray. You look wonderful like a babhi doll thank you
Aisha Begum Thanks! I just use a water jug to make my filtered water and put into a spray bottle that I got from amazon. Here’s the link: www.pure-aire.co.uk/product/pureaire-alkaline-water-jug/
I enjoy your videos so much! Your pant collection is magnificent! May I suggest you lower the background music so we can hear you clearer? I’m new subscriber here and calatheas are my favorite! 💚
Oh man, that look you give your birb of "technically this isn't harmful to you so I don't want to get too angry about you pecking at it... but also you're eating my plants and are a mischievous lil bean" is so relatable XD but seriously it's SO hard to find any info on calatheas that goes beyond "keep humid and out of direct sunlights" the detail and actual tips in this vid are SO useful so thank you. I know this vid is old so you probably wont see this, but the only question I have after watching is where did you get your calathea orbifolia/where do you get your calatheas in general 'cause in the uk I find it so hard to find varieties of Calatheas but I LOVE the genus
Hazelbeanableable thank you! Glad you found it useful. I got the Orbifolia online from a shop called house of plants but I’m not sure if they have them any more. You can get quite large ones from IKEA. Most of my calatheas came from Homebase or Haskins garden centres, and some from the Ginger jungle online 💚🌿
Interesting idea with sea shells, I'll try it! :) Actually I saw calatheas at couple of botanical gardens - and their leaves were not in great conditions either. Seems like it's normal for them to be too sensitive about everything. I've seen them in perfect condition only in garden centres and at yours , some wonder indeed. I have 5, only one is doing well even on a wind draft, seems like originally a strong plant. But as you said, good drainage is very important too, which is not a case with my calatheas
Hi there, I have come across this video, great one by the way and just have to say that I'll try the seashells as after watching your channel and seeing your plants, I happened to see the only Calathea at my local Stratco store and bought it. Long story short, he now lives under my little back-door enclosure which is under the big veranda outside and is doing really well. I have since then gotten about three to four new leaves. The nats became a big problem so hence his new location but he seems to be doing ok where he is. Again thanks for a very informative video. Cheers
votre calathea orbifolia est une merveille c est une plante difficile a trouver je la cherche depuis un bon moment en tout cas vos plantes sont magnifiques
I am worried about how mine goes this winter too, it’s in a sunroom now and doing quite well. I’ve had mine for three months now. It a little smaller than yours but not much, Good luck with yours!
Hi, I have 2 tiny starter orbifolias with around 4 leaves each. They are doing well except one leaf is transpiring like crazy and turning translucent and brown in the same area. I planted it in a 4" plastic container which sits in a plastic planter with pebbles inside. The water is below the top pebbles so it's not sitting in water. I have small diffusers running all day around it so humidity is always 50+ and it receives medium filtered light. Im using a moisture meter to make sure it's not dry or wet but just moist. Not sure what else to do. Any help would be appreciated!
Just subscribed! ! Thank you for the all your advice! I would like to ask you which direction is the window facing and how far is it from the calatheas. Thanks!
Thank you! Unfortunately it suffered thrips last year so I’m regrowing it. I live in the UK so certainly not a tropical climate 😆✨🥶 Check out my more recent tours as I think you’ll enjoy them 🌿💚✨ Merry Christmas btw 🎄✨
Thanks for your tips! How do you water your calatheas? I was told to keep soil moist but not soggy. Do you just water a little at a time or do bottom or top watering with a little water till moisture metre says moist? Unfortunately, my Calathea rosy is too soggy and dying.
How far away from the window should I keep my orbifolia? Currently mine are about 1 meter away, I have a north facing window with daylight constant through the day. I put a plastic sheet over it during the afternoon so it filters the sunlight a bit more. I have a humidifier and use brita filter to water it. I want it to be healthy and big like yours would it be ok if it was 2 or 3 meters away from the window?
Terri True I got her from houseofplants.co.uk which was the only place selling them at the time. They are out of stock now too. My Orbifolia has doubled in size since I bought her! 💚🌿
I can't seem to make tropical plant foliage grow as big. I put in my calathea rattles snake in a potting soil with ceramic pot with drainage hole. It's not in a place with indirect bright light and no direct sun. I've kept stones around the plant with water to keep the humidity high but non of this is helping grow leaves big..it remains small...some new foliage dried up and some foliage edges are dried up. The soil remains wet constantly because I keep watering it every other day because of some dried up foliage and dried up edges. What possible could turn foliage dry when I'm constantly keeping soil wet with watering?
Enjoyed your video, thank you. Any ideas why brown spots might suddenly have appeared on my Orbifolia's leaves? Maybe the tap water, or maybe too much light? Thank you :)
