- Selby is a market town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England; it is located 12 miles south of York on the River Ouse. In the 2021 UK Census, it had a population recorded at 19,760.
The town was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire; from 1974 until 2023, the town was the administrative centre of the Selby District.
Selby once had a large shipbuilding industry and was an important port on the Selby Canal, which brought trade from Leeds
Selby lies on the tidal River Ouse in a natural area of Yorkshire known as the Humberhead Levels. The main roads that cross at Selby are the A63 from Leeds to Hull and the A19 from Doncaster to York, though the A19 and A63 have no longer met in Selby itself since the opening of the Selby Bypass in 2004. The River Ouse is navigable upstream as far as York so the old toll bridge, by which the A63 crossed the river at Selby, had to allow for this. For many years the swing bridge in Selby was a notorious local bottleneck but since the opening of the Selby bypass congestion in the town has been relieved.
The importance of Selby as a market town has declined in recent decades and its short-lived prominence as the centre of the Selby Coalfield has also waned. Selby is close to both York and Leeds. Its popularity as a tourist destination, owing to Selby Abbey, has led to a large amount of development and renovation in the town and surrounding area.

Thanks Mark...the 3 Swans looked a great olde world pub but was closed as i passed.So i went in the Giant Bellflower instead...a pint of Abbot slipped down perfectly.
Selby looks a lovely place as you said Stephen ..our history is my favourite topic as is churches & cathedrals..so thank you so much for sharing again really enjoyed it 😊

never been before, although Mrs Metalman had to go to regular meetings and training courses there for years when she worked for a company who had a main office there. Looked a canny place to walk around and I loved the Abbey, inside and out, cheers Alan

👍7. Great tour of Selby and interesting info about its history. Nice to see the buds on the trees there too, Selby must be getting more sunshine than we are! Another example of an affluent Market Town surviving the current decline of the high street. Beautiful looking Abbey and great fact about Henry the First. Let’s see if we can find another building.. 😂

Selby looked so nice as you walked around, we love market towns and have heard this is a lovely one. Seems to be a lot there, that church was stunning and so big, I can see why its bigger than some cathedrals, so lovely inside and out. That was impressive to see ~ Anna 👍

That looks like a very pleasant place. Obviously had money in the past but it looks very well cared for now. The 'To Let' building looked typical of a former bank branch to me.

Goodness, all these little town are brilliant!! So many quaint corners to visit and such amazing history it seems around every corner! Sure appreciate too how much of the original architecture seems to have been preserved! Wonderful!!

Hi Stephen and you’ve made a really nice film of Selby. Only one shop boarded up. Nick of Gen Exp should visit this town, all the towns he visits fills us with deep depression. The Abbey was impressive as was the pint shown. The only downside to this lovely film is that at no point did we see the lovely Karen😡
The lovely Karen has been at work today [ poor thing ]..Yes i only saw one shop that was not open, so i's not all doom and gloom...ps...i thought of you as i downed that Abbot....thanks Mike.
The story of the Cholera victims under the green was fascinating...I wonder why they did not get buried in the Abbey grounds or maybe the burial place was once part of the Abbey...See you got a pic of those Hill brothers at 6:48...The Abbey is really impressive...loved it and any building where you can get a pint is fine by me😂...Looked really good in Selby...Steve...a word of warning...Son number 4 of mine is getting married and all his brothers and mates are having a 2 day Stag do in Leeds this weekend...so please avoid Leeds and get back to the Peak District to do some more hills until it is safe to return back to Yorkshire🤥...Great vid, enjoyed it...Cheers Les.🙂👍
