    Good evening! And thank you for tuning into this brief walk through the busy Yorkshire market town of Selby! There's a lot of history to the town, and we just about scratch the surface on this walk, but venture to the edges of the main road, and you'll find the sprawling Selby Park, the gorgeous canal which we mentioned on our tour, and so much more :)
    Also, I promised an audio-narrated walk in Durham this week, but due to being busy elsewhere I haven't quite had the time to finish it yet. But I do hope to get it out to you next week, so stay tuned!

    Massively changed in the last 10 years, I grew up in Selby and my family were coal miner's in stillingfleet and Selby Pitts, and was present on the day they broke the record for the most amount of coal mined in a day, I remember the old building cranes they used to be on th side near abbots road and the old rigid paper mill at the back for years after they fell down, great to see how the place has changed in the last 10 years,

    That was an eye opener , never realised Selby was so nice , I always thought of it as a grim coal mining town , how wrong I was !

    Selby also had 3 Cinemas...
    The Hippodrome Cawood Road
    The Ritz Scott Road
    The Central were Morrisons stands now

      The Ritz, I would park my bike and see what they had to offer for the next week all the Saturday morning how I think it was sixpence, .

    That bridge where you started was a toll bridge I remember us paying 2 old pence to cross it in a car years ago

    • @melscienerf5977
      @melscienerf5977 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah and most older locals still call it the toll Bridge. Think it was 10p to cross it in a car when it finally stopped taking tolls in the 90s.

    Nice walk in the town of Selby England. I enjoyed it. Very beautiful and historical the medieval buildings and houses are, Can't wait to see more soon. Your history lessons are always great and your walks are always enjoyable. How is your weekend? Mine is great. Have a great day greetings from Canada 😀

    Brings back more than a few memories from when I attended the then Grammar School - we moved to Hampshire in '79 & I STILL have the "good luck" card signed by dozens of kids from my year (was in class 4F under Mr Clifford Imeson). Happy days!

      The Abbey is beautiful inside. I prefer it to York Minster and its free to go in. I may be bias as I volunteer there.

    Hello. I've very much enjoy your video's. Knowing Selby a little it would have been interesting to see there's a nice square near the Abbey and walking down towards the old toll bridge beyond the Abbey

    I read a story that told Count St Germaine initiated the first building of a Church where the Abbey is situated. He'd had a vision/dream where he could see a tree on the bank of a river near to where there was a bend in the river and God wanted him to build a Church at that place, he travelled Europe for several years looking for this place and eventually found the tree and river-bend at Selby.

    A very nice market town, with not too many barbers shops, aka arms caches for the invaders coming in by dinghies every day.

    Looking at relocating here from Bradford. Selby does look very flat unlike the rolling hills where I live but I've heard it's an up and coming place to live with a family? Ive got to get out of Bradders but is there plenty of work in Selby or the area?

    • @Sportspenguin77
      @Sportspenguin77 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends. Plenty of work in distribution both in Selby and nearby Sherburn in Elmet
      For more professional career jobs probably York or Leeds.
      The town is ok I guess. But it's not posh enough for a Caffe Nero if you know what I mean.

    You didn't mention the railway connections . Isn't the railway an important part of Selby history?

    It must be 50 odd years since I was last in Selby when looking for a petrol station at 10 pm after missing my turning on the A1, no SatNav back then, and ending up low on fuel.
    I do remember when dad got a car in 1956 we used to visit my uncle’s caravan in Bridlington often and travelled via Selby and the rickety old wooden Toll bridge which I think cost 6 old pence to cross, I assume where you started your walk was its replacement.

    • @keithrobson6443
      @keithrobson6443 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Selby only has two petrol stations although a third one Is being built .

      As I remember it was one of those garage type places with a petrol pump, not a petrol station as we see today, there was one in the village I grew up in, I was lucky as he was just locking up at 10 pm and agreed to fuel me up.

    • @janon2402
      @janon2402 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikeswift6713 it could have been millgate. Until very recently it was just a couple of small pumps and a garage but some time in the past 2 or 3 years been taken over by BP and turned into a generic petrol station.

      The toll Bridge wasn't replaced ....but did have to get a bit of shoring up after the 2001 floods that caused a lot of damage to the structure.
      It's still pretty bouncy if you sit on it in a car as a lorry drives over 😂

    It looks so ideal I spent the first 25 years of my life there and believe me the place is a sh*t hole the people are nasty and interfering no one can mind there own business and the drug problem is out of control. Now i know why i left and never went back.
