    I'm betting the issue is more with the white chalk paint. Chalk Paint had a binder added to it . That's why it's used for so many furniture painting techniques. So I think it's binding with the coating on the paper. You didn't seem to have issues with reg acrylic paints. They have the plastic binders in them. I'm thinking that's why the gel medium also stuck. It's got a binding agent added.. it's gotta be reactive to that particular paper...
    Great video no matter the OH NOOOOs

    I have had this issue with copy paper too Barbara so I usually use sketching paper or something else like packaging paper, baking paper or even newsprint. Sometimes cheap paints don't have a lot of pigment them, like your first blue paint. Anyway the results are very good. Every gelli plate session I have has those, "oh nooo! ", moments too. Arohanui.❤❤❤

    I think you're waiting too long on the second coat. Try pulling it off sooner. Especially with the chalk paint.❤

    Chalk paint is bad, dries too much, and conditioning the plate is the best solution

    Amazing idea dear 😍😍 I fixed this copy paper sticking problem by not waiting for long while rubbing the print, I can notice you rub a lot for longer time it makes the paper soaked a bit and stick so it’s easier to tear

  • @cindycreateforlife

    I have found that cheap paints do not have enough pigment but, a lot of moisture, so the paper tends to stick to the plate. I also do not like chalk paint on it, that’s a bit like using gesso. I just love the prints that pulled the image, even a couple of tears don’t matter unless you want to use it whole. Good collage material! Aloe Vera won’t hurt your plate, I don’t think that is the issue. Always an adventure with a Gelli plate!😁💕🇨🇦

    Turn the gelli plate and paper over. Pull the plate off of the paper. This is a way to avoid the paper tearing. It works.

Lg Edith

    Some cheap paint has a lot less pigment & more filler than others & I suspect that light blue is actually a transparent paint. So when you use a more opaque colour to pull the print, the transparent paint just blends in. Worth doing a sample chart & figuring out which of your paints are transparent / semitransparent & opaque to be able to plan (I’m gradually doing that but I have a LOT of paint 🫣🤷‍♀️. It’s one reason I want to try gel printing with intaglio inks one day. That & you get gorgeous fine definition. She doesn’t use gel plates, but I absolutely adore the monoprint work of Rebecca Vincent. I’d love to adapt her techniques & some of her style to the Gelli plate. I have tried & had some success, but had battles with transparency.

Chapeau😊. ❤

    What I’m learning from PM Artists is that the opacity and transparency are also factors with getting the pull. They prefer using Hammermill 32# paper which I’ve gotten and like. They are also using carnival wet strength tissue paper which is amazing. Great show today. ❤

Trotzdem so tolle Ergebnisse. LG und dickes Drückerle Dany.

    I have found that cheaper paint (like the craft paint level) doesn't work as well on the gel plate, like there's extra liquid or some additive (not sure really) that just doesn't cooperate - which also might be why your copy paper is getting stuck, maybe it's soaking up the excess liquid???? I tend to use an average medium weight cardstock (65 lbs - sorry don't know the conversion to gsm) or sulphite paper that's a softer texture and really picks up well on your pulls (90 lbs). But I've never had the extreme sticking and tearing you had, so weird and super sucks! If you figure out why let us know!
    I've had better luck with knit or fabric impressions when I have higher contrast colors (dark base and light pull color or opposite) to really see the details. When I've used colors too close in value I lose that texture. Yes - lots of experiments to figure out what worked with the different fabrics.

    Really enjoyed seeing your experiments with the denim. I've used a lot of canvas in the past and now I want to use some denim that was given to me a while back. Those fails are learning opportunities. It happens. Most of the time it has to do with the amount of paint and the condition of your gel plate. Good that you showed adding the oil to the plate, I think a lot of us crafters forget that we have to take care of our tools so that they work! :) I liked that you scanned those prints. I've scanned prints and then altered the hue and got some really cool papers with the same pattern but in many different colorways. Thanks for sharing your play session with us. I know how long it takes to do these gel print sessions and know it can take all day. :) Keep creating. :)

    I have watched some videos of PM Artists where Pam made layered gelli prints. She puts them aside with the paper on it and lets them dry completely before pulling off the paper. I was able to reproduce that. Maybe that helps…?

    The next time it starts to rip, turn the gelli plate upside down and then peal the plate off of the paper. Rice paper also work well- strong. Juggles has the Sketch up paper. If you want to use copier paper, use a heavier paper.

    30 seconds in and I knew I was going to love this!! I tried gelli printing off and on for years, and while I made some cool patterns, I never really "got" it until I watched a video of Froyle's, and something she said or the way she said it, it finally clicked! I'm half way thru your vid now and have to go, so I'll watch the rest later. I've only ever used cheap copy paper, tho I did just get "wet tissue paper" from Amazon... Have you heard of that? The answer is probably in one of the videos you linked below. I'm proud of your tenacity, baby girl!! Hugs, MomK 🤗❤️🌵❤️🤗

    It's the paint. It has to have some type of glue medium in it. I've had this problem with inexpensive acrylics which have acrylic binders in them and cause the paper to stick to the surface of the plate. It is still a great idea! Great outcome with some paints.

So your videos have really been helpful to me I'm so glad you said not to start upright I wonder would it be okay to store it in a box or a plastic bag perhaps what do you have to do to condition it for your very first use it was a treat to myself thank you I will try using the jeans it was awesome love you mwah mwah

    • @49dragonflies

      As far as I know you don’t have to do anything to the plate before you start. Your plate should come with storage and general instructions.

    • @allisonjames2923

      Don’t store it on cardboard or paper. It needs to be a non-porous surface or it will leach out the oils from the gel plate & greatly add to sticking problems like Barbara has (although I think hers mainly came from using a heat gun on its first outing & trying to pull paper when it’s wet!). Plastic bags (the thick clear resealable kind) can work, but just be aware it will pick up the texture & takes quite a while to relax again (they’re fussy things, Gelli plates - do love their mineral (plain baby oil) oily massages & oil baths, as well as time to relax, but I suppose they do work hard since they’re such fun!) That’s why using the plastic sheets that comes with them is still best. If you lose one, they’re just acetate sheets. Tim Holtz also does a metal tin to store them, but it won’t fit the A4 - just a bit too short 😩 does apparently fit a few smaller ones. Oh & you don’t have to do anything before you start, just start rolling paint on! Be aware that it will repel the paint a bit at first, especially if it has a lot of fluid in it like cheaper more liquid paints. I actually think it creates cool effects though so I deliberately use some fluid paints on mine 😊 If you do though have paint beading, you shouldn’t have sticking problems to start with as the plate is pretty non-stick. But as time goes on & you use it more, you will start to get some sticking of certain types of paper. It’s because the paper gets damp & the fibres relax (also why it wrinkles). So if you start to get tearing, you either need to pull your prints really quickly, or leave it on until the paper is dry (& no longer cool to the touch). Don’t get in the habit of leaving paper to dry overnight often though, as that leaches oil into the paper (even if you can’t see it) & it will demand massages & baths more often! And just remember to never ever use glossy photo paper on it! You can use matte photo paper with caution, but glossy photo paper will definitely stick - way worse than poor Barbara’s “oh noooo” moments here 😳 Welcome to the addiction! It’s heaps of fun, but takes up a lot of space as it’s easy to just keep going & going & going lol. There are loads of Gelli plate artists out there. Froyle Art & Robyn McClendon are two of my favourites (although the chick in Froyles has a wild cackling laugh (most people find it infectious 🤷‍♀️) & Robyn talks… a lot! So you might need the FFWD button a lot!). Ceri Griffiths, Elizabeth St Hilaire, Yeates Makes are all amazing too! Especially Ceri & Yeates - they’re super creative in their designs. And Gerda Lipski is an absolute genius at printing! Anyway, enjoy! 😁🙃😜

    I would have never thought about putting jeans on a gel plate. And I absolutely love it! They turned out fabulous. I had one go at a gel plate and did not have a good experience. But I’m going to try it again. Maybe I will try it with jeans this time! Thanks for the amazing inspiration! Hugs 🤗❤️👖

    What a great idea, and perfect timing as I’m putting together items to make a jean denim journal. 👏👏. I’ve not had a problem with using copy paper, and mine is not high quality. I kept thinking it was the white chalk paint? I love watching your videos because you show us everything! This is a great idea, thx Barbara

    Another great video. I think you have a combination of issues. Paper weight, paint not having the right compounds and even possibly cleaning the jelly plate with a wet wipe. I'm so sorry you have been sick just got over it myself. Wishes for a full recovery soon. I love the funny oh no's.

    Never thought of cleaning with olive oil.
    And I love using the denim!
    I have also had trouble with tearing with copy paper

    These were absolutely gorgeous! I know that they didn’t all work out but in the end you had a nice stack of beautiful papers. I will be purchasing a gelli plate. I just can’t wait to get started. You have once again greatly inspired me. Thank you, Barbara.

    Never give up is my take away from this video!! The gloves came off!😅 I will never own a gelli plate but you go girl, I loved everything about this video. You better use those tags inside those jeans, as well! ❤

    I was going to say add baby oil to clean the plate. Then after you let your jean print dry,, and added your pick up paint and put your paper down go pick it up. Do not over press your paper ingo the gelli plate. Rub it quickly and semi lightly. Ie just go over it one or two times. The oil you used caused the print not go come up. You just have to find that fine line of picking it up. I think we have all had paper sticks.

    12:58 this is exactly why my gelli plate is at the bottom of a drawer, collecting dust, because I have barely gotten any good results… and then I had no idea how to use the resulting prints because it was all a bit drab… I have not yet finished the video but I already feel the same annoyance and frustrations from when I was experimenting with it 😡🤣 I have no patience for this medium anymore LOL but I am always fascinated watching others.

    Very cool prints! I wouldn’t have thought of using jeans to print but love the way they printed. I usually clean my plate with hand sanitizer when it gets grungy. I usually leave bits that didn’t pull because I love seeing them come up on the next print. I have a jeans pocket that I think I’m gonna go play with.

    Hi Barbara, I always love to watch you create and work. I use recycled copy paper from the blue box in the office all the time on my Gelli plate and acrylic paints and never have an issue.
    Maybe the wrong side of the copy paper? Or paint was too dry? Maybe the paint was old?

    Brilliant idea to use the jeans! Great results. Could you hear me yelling at you though? It seemed very obvious that the copy paper was the issue as it only worked once, when it had paint on it. Rice paper is highly recommended by some people but when I tried it, mine tore everytime but my friend who had a different brand, had great results.

    I am a novice gel printer so I’m sorry I can’t offer any solutions to your issues. I think those prints can still be used and looked at as happy accidents, adding a bit of ink and making them grungier than anticipated. I realize they’re not what you had in mind, but I think they’re fabulous, nonetheless.

    Wow...I love these!🤩 I would have never thought to use jeans...ever.💗 I have a pack of three, 3" gelli plates, a square, a triangle & a circle. Also a 5x7, I think...& an 8x1-ish?? Not exactly sure, 'cuz I've never used them, nor any...not even once.👀
    I had no clue about conditioning with olive/baby oil, either. Nor not to store them in the original packaging...Why not?? How DO you store them then?? Thx, Barbara. They're super cool!💗💖💗
    p.s. I happen to really like the dark ones.🖤💛🖤 Oh...& I've been practicing my "Oh, Noooo!!..."s. I think it makes all mishaps much easier to handle.😉 Much love💗 xoxo
