    Jaco was definitely a guy from another planet or dimension. The same as Mozart, Bach or Einstein. Every time i listen to him I think it is just impossible to play like him for ordinary human being. Always when I'm seeking for motivation to live on I'm listening to this lovely , divine, beautiful MONSTER.

    How this beauty didn't make it onto his album is a complete mystery. At that time he was like the Silver Surfer [or any super-hero of your choice] of the bass.

      Maybe it was seen as similar to Continuum hence expendable.

    This is a work of art this tune is..Really, right up there with Bach, Bird, Coltrane, Herbie and Miles..even more amazing is that this is from 1975 !! F-ing mind blowing how advanced he was at that age..light years ahead of everyone, + the fact this is on fretless and he's so dead on in pitch and time..Jaco was phenomenon, as Herbie said and he was right! That this tune DIDN'T make it to his debut LP is a testament to his stellar talent..I am blown away by this tune again again and again..

    The portrait of Jaco painted by Gregory Pastorius has the score of this piece added to it, and its pitches are exactly as heard here.

    .."For some reason the recording circulating on the internet is almost a wholetone sharp" - alas this and similar problems occour more and more on YT...many times you find the very same recordings
    uploadad by different sources, and they can have different pitches -(and tempi as well!)-..we live in high-tech times, but most people just don't care - bad news for listeners who have "absolut " hearing... I 'm glad that you DO care and DID something about it! -V.

    I wonder if this is Alex Darqui on piano? ... But, it does sound like Wayne Shorter on soprano. ... I remember Jaco did the original demos in Miami and wanted Alex on the album more than just one song. But Bobby wanted Herbie on all of it. ... Very beautiful song I'm surprised WR didn't cover it, say on Mr Gone.

    • @artakha14
      @artakha14  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Mickey, it's a very beautiful song indeed!
      Come to think of it, it does sound a bit like Herbie, especially the comping under bass solo at around 1:14. It was him playing the rhodes on Havona demo from 1975 also.
      As for sax, it makes sense it would be Wayne since I don't remember any other soprano players who collaborated with Jaco this early in his carreer.

    If the original bootleg of this was a whole tone sharp due to some artifact of the original tape, or of whatever tape the copy was made on, there likely would have been a playback speed issue too. Did you slow the playback speed down appropriately when you fixed the pitch? There’s a live Pat Metheny trio with Jaco and Bob Moses bootleg on YT that’s similarly too fast and very sharp. I used Transcribe! software to get it in tune and with the “analog lock” setting it corrected the speed automatically based on the change in pitch that I made.

    • @artakha14
      @artakha14  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey David, you might be right about the playback speed. Back when I was transcribing this song, my main concern was the pitch since I had to write down the correct notes and I didn't think much about the tempo.

    Jaco seems to be almost universally admired, if not idolized as the greatest bass player who has ever lived, as though he existed in a vacuum, without peer or context, like he was an immaculate conception. Sure he pulled all the frets out of his bass and filled the holes with epoxy glue, but fretless instruments were not exactly new, as the stand up bass, cello and violin in classical and later, Jazz predated Jacos bit of mimicry that was clever, but certainly not an earth shattering revelation as it has been made out to be.
    Jaco proclaimed himself.the greatest Just as loudly as Muhammad Ali, before he was pummelled into senility. Jaco was a very good bassist and certainly great in his early to mid career, but he was not greater than Niels Henning, Miroslav Vitous or about a thousand others. I sincerely doubt Jaco would even be in the running for the imaginary crown of the greatest of all time, especially in light of the level of musicianship among today's great virtuosos such as Michael Pipoquinha, Mohini Dey, Thundercat, Charles Berthoud, Michael Manring with the list of greats being to long to itemize here.
    While I love Jaco's first solo album and his invaluable contribution to Weather Report, I am not fond of Jaco's muddy tone and this is because the amps, pedals and oday's recording technology are superior to those available in his short time on earth. Just to clarify, I am not suggesting that Jaco was not great, but that greatness and virtuosity is not the singular province of one icon, which is idolatry, but a quality of those who tirelessly work toward developing their capacity to embody the infinite potential of the universe.

    • @axetu
      @axetu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. One does indeed not need to tirelessly work toward developing their capacity to embody the infinite potentential of the universe to be called great. The great are great before and after the philosophical labels that attempt to harness them into something the observer only comforts himself with.

      I don't really think that many jazz aficionados, especially bass players think that way at all. Most of us have a wider scope than that. It's kind of like asking a non musician of a certain age who the greatest guitar player was and the answer will inevitably be "Jimi Hendrix" 90% of the time. So you can divert this critique at just about any genre and instrument in the music world. "Iconism" usually befalls the uninformed IMO.

    • @hjt5255
      @hjt5255 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see it as a pyramid of greatness when there is someone at the top. I like all the different bassists you listed for their different quirks and things that make them unique. They are all great, and that's as complicated as it needs to be in my opinion. I'd rather appreciate them all equally than treat certain ones like they are objectively better just because I like a certain thing they do.

      @@hjt5255 Indeed. The real question is why people cannot abide that "no. 1" might be a bogus concept at all. Hinduism recognizes multiple pathways to salvation, as opposed to Abrahamic intolerant monotheism. Isaiah Berlin noted that a genuine pluralism is hard for human societies to achieve. Apparently, not even in TH-cam comment threads! Thanks for representing for plurality though.
