as fresh as tomorrow. With Jaco at his best. I'm still listening - again and again - their marvelous music, from Mysterious Traveller to Sportin Life and, of course, their masterpieces, Black Market and Heavy Weather.
RIP Jaco, Wayne and Joe. One of the strongest groups that ever lived, I feel blessed that these recordings exist and that these masters got to put these out.
I was at Woodstock the night before....Hendrix finished and we hustled down to this gig. Then the next day we saw Pink Floyd perform the Wall live in Berlin. It was a life changing 3 days!

I know this vid is more about Jaco, but I was just as enthralled by Joe Zawinul's genius. One of the few musicians who were not intimidated playing with Miles Davis. In an interview in the early days of Weather Report, Joe was asked how it felt to play with Miles; Joe's answer was "Why don't you ask him how it felt to play with me"? No brag, just fact; Joe was every bit Miles' equal!
No he wasn't...Miles changed the fabric of music as we know it...Joe was there for the wonderful ride......don't get it twisted!... Wayne Shorter was the so-called genius in the crew and Jaco was the rock star!
Been listening to jazz since the 1960s...never heard Zawinul spoken of as a genius...it was always Wayne Shorter...Zawinul's great value was in his ability to lead an almost always grouping of legitimate jazz All-stars.
A friend of mine and I saw Weather Report every night that they played at the Whiskey A Go Go. We stood at the stage, looking up in awe. After their last set, Joe bent down and asked us if we would like to go back stage since we had been there every night. I'll never forget the conversations we heard. "What is music" is what was talked about. Many of the answers were really "out there". What an amazing band!❤❤❤😊😊😊
The way Jaco Pastorius is smiling in the first 2:00 of this video encapsulates everything that I know to be excitement and intrigue. Bless whomever uploaded this.
I saw that same exact lineup at the Fox Warfield Theater on Market Street in San Francisco. They were spectacular. They're such great musicians, so much so that it's frightening. Of all the dozens of live concerts I've attended, Weather Report, with Jaco, was my number one, favorite of all time. The acoustics were absolutely superb.
I was at a Warfield show too man!!! however there was no Airto! Jaco ran out onto the stage with no shirt on I think it was 1980 show. Totally Powerful show with Peter Erskine! What year were you there?
With Badrena and Acuna as percussionists, you dont need a sophisticated jazz drummer like Erskine... just another beast like Alphonse Mouzon who nails the beat. RIP my friend.
Has anybody ever noticed that this is sort of a variation on Zawinul's "Mercy, Mercy? " C13 A13 - F13 D13 and "she knocks me off my feet" for the bridge... just a thought... Jocko's riffs become more comprehensible when viewed in the context of these chord changes.
This is a big part of why the 70s were the greatest decade for music. We had jazz, funk, jazz fusion, prog, psychedelic, medieval-classical, hard rock, Gaelic and Welsh rock, and so many shades of "experimental" that didn't fit into any category at all. This was the decade of Zappa, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Weather Report, Stanley Clarke, Jean Luc Ponty and Parliament. Etc. Sure, the 60s were fun, and lots of great music has been made after 1980, but there was never a decade for music like the 70s. Where's my TARDIS?
I agree with @paulsimmons. Both groups broke new ground in terms of their longer form compositions. Their styles may be different but musicality is about more than technique ( and that’s not a critique of anyone in either group).
@@svetlakarcina341Do you actually know Yes’ music and how important they were, not just in prog rock, but even more widely? I think Acuna played the trap drums on this song, and on most of the live tunes from this incarnation of the band.
Alex played the heck out of the drumset with this band. Seek out the 1976 recordings from Bologna and Kristianstad. A very, very bad man.
