  • A look at how I did my live axle golf cart conversion, and the golf cart engine swap motor mount. The engine will be the Harbor Freight 212cc 6.5 HP engine. This is a Par Car, it is a lot like the old Harley Davidson golf car.

How has the live axle held up and do you wish you went with a bigger motor?

I only ran it like 10 minutes. The disc brake I had on there just did not work good enough. The engine did OK, I used a #41 chain and sprocket. I had a 10 tooth on the engine and I think it was 60 on the axle. Maybe 54, but I think it was 60 to help with the tall tires and the weight. The centrifugal clutch ran hot, but the set up worked fine with a torque converter. Like I said both CC and TC had 10 teeth if that helps you. That is why the engine is off in this video the brake was not good. I would have stayed with the set up if the brake worked. I have no golf carts now but I have a lot of wheels and tires.

I’m doing a similar setup. How did it drive with the live axle?

I did this on a 3 wheel golf cart and it pushed enough to make the cart want to tip on turns. So I changed one hub to an idler hub. Check out BMI karts part number 380104 they call it a 4x4 billet aluminum idler hub. 4x4 means 4 bolts and 4 inch bolt circle/bolt pattern. that fits all golf cart wheels.

Where did you find a live axle that long? Wanting to do a similar setup!

It is just a 42 inch long piece of 1018 cold rolled steel one inch in diameter. There are no keyways, I welded all the hubs in place. Brake hub, sprocket hub, and the wheel hubs all are welded to the one inch bar.

It is a Columbia Par Car, they bought Harley Davidson golf carts , but it is the same thing just a different name mostly. I am not sure when, or how much they are different.
