How to Properly Start Your Car (in the winter)

  • Many people don't know the proper way to start your car in the winter. Here is a quick rundown (more detail in the video):
    1. Insert and turn key to the 'ON' position.
    2. Notice a fluid type noise and electric pumping. This is fuel reaching the engine.
    3. Wait approximately 3 seconds until the pumping stops and proceed to the 'Start' position with the key to activate the starter.
    4. Release as normal.
    This will assure proper fuel pressure is reaching the injectors before attempting to start, which is critical in extreme cold.
    Enjoy!

    You're right about key on ignition before start. This helps build up pressure in the fuel line. When you crank the engine even though the fuel pump is running the fuel injectors are working and causing fuel to flow/spray into the engine. If fuel pressure in the fuel line (engine bay/injectors) is too low then there won't be enough pressure for a fine spray from injectors. As the pump builds up pressure the injectors release some of the pressure. If started from cold with full Pressure in the fuel line/rail the engine will start instantly. When ignition is turned on the fuel pump runs for 3 seconds before automatically turning off. It runs to build up fuel pressure & stops because the engine isn't running. A sensor turns pump off when it senses the engine is not running as a safety feature in case of an accident where a crashed car is stalled & fuel line may be broken. I used to start cars that had been sitting parked for a week and I would always turn ignition on & count to 3, ( can hear fuel pump buzzing in the fuel tank), then turn off & repeat process 2 more times. This would cause the fuel pump to run for a total of 9 seconds & the engine would always start instantly. The cause of drop in fuel pressure is the liquid shrinks when cold after being hot. Fuel injection system is sealed to hold pressure and fuel pump has a one way valve but there may be a tiny loss in pressure over a long period of time.

    If you’re running a naturally aspirated engine, all you have to do is shift from Park directly into Neutral. The engine will automatically idle down regardless of temperature. You can then gently shift to Reverse or Drive. I’ve used this trick on many vehicles as new as 2022 and as old as 1993, they all do the same thing. I haven’t tried it on a turbocharged vehicle.

    older cars like even 1970-2005 dont have nearly as many sensors to determine the correct air/fuel ratio for the climate that these newer cars do. thats why the car idles so high when its cold out because its harder to keep running so it consumes more fuel till it gets warm enough. a lot of these newer cars dont even need to be warmed up to drive in the bitter cold.

  • @carters2

    I warm my car up with the heat off until the ECU idles down to (or close to) the normal idle speed. Once that has happened I turn the heat on and be on my way keeping a light load on the engine until its fully warmed up. Most people who warm their vehicles up for long periods of time often neglect to think about the moving parts that are not being warmed up while sitting idling like the diffs and to an extent the transmission as well.

    Once ur car us out of open loop is when you want to take off. So pretty much when ur high idle comes down to normal idle is when you should take off. The oil will be fine especially with the most common 5w20 its not that thick in the winter. The biggest thing is letting the pistons to warm up,and reduce the risk of piston slap under load.

    It's fine to let it idle for about 30 seconds, then just drive the car gently (like you said), then let it warm up to operating temp plus another 5 mins after your gauge hits the middle since engine oil is usually always thicker then coolant and you're good to drive harder!

    I idle my cars all the time. Summer or winter. IN winter, definitely 10 minutes. I don't care. Been doing this the past 2 decades. NEVER had an engine problem. I also change my oil religiously. Every 6 months regardless of miles. Sometimes i do 2000 miles in 6 months. Sometimes 4000 miles in 6 months. I change it every 6 months. Ran numerous UOA's on different oils, and in different cars, everything is perfect until the ONE time i ran royal purple in my LS2. THen it showed high copper numbers. Switched to Mobil 1, and it was perfect. Since then, (which was 7 years ago), everything has been perfect.
    You would have to have full negligence to your car in order to have any engine related problems. Meaning never changing oil, always running it hard when the engine isn't warmed up, lots of stop and go. Quick start ups, shutting down etc. Those will wreck havoc, over time, to your engine.
    BUt other than that, i have never had an engine related problem by idling my cars a bit longer than most people. Never had a problem, probably never will. So my habit won't change.
    And before anyone says it's wasting gas, i haven't noticed a difference in savings in me warming up my car 3-5 minutes in summer vs 10-15 minutes in winter. I am always filling up the same time, paying about the same money (summer gas prices are inflated a bit).

    Your kinda right about the fuel kinda wrong. As long as your pumps working there’s always fuel in the lines. You don’t have to wait for the pump to prime but it’s a good habit too do. Now the only way you have to prime the pump is if you completely ran out of gas. Now your tanks empty and your lines are dried up. So priming the pump would be something you have to do in that case.

    • @cmiovino
      @cmiovino  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, think about what happens when you turn your car on 'fast' or regularly. It's in the off position and then quickly goes through 'accesory', 'on', and 'start'. Then once it's started, you release to let it fall back to 'on'. Basically, when you make the full motion to hit start, you're turning everything on anyways. There is no extra draw.
      There would be an extra draw if you have the HVAC fans running, headlights on, etc. which would apply the same no matter which way you start the car.

Why does everybody think they can drive off after 2 minutes idle? lol. Certain oils like power steering, are nearly frozen, the transmission oils are thick. You are increasing stress on your vehicle. A friend of mine destroyed 2 transmissions in his new Mazda. He never plugged in , and always raced off immediately after starting, even in -30c weather. Turning the ignition to start and waiting a few seconds is a good idea though, it also warms up the ignition, which is also frozen.

I'm not as worried about my injectors or carburetor dry firing. However I AM worried about my internal metal on metal surfaces moving against each other with no oil. So there can be a benefit to cranking and not firing. ;-)

  • @Bellwolfrace

    I wouldn't allow the car to idle too long before setting off, especially a diesel. The majority of engine wear occurs within the first fifteen minutes whilst the engine is cold. Allowing it to idle whilst cold is basically causing premature wear on the engine.
    Start the car, leave it 20 seconds and then drive off. Don't take the RPM above 2,000 on gear changes until the engine is running at normal temp. Leaving the car for two minutes for the 'oil to circulate' is not necessary, as the oil will already have circulated within seconds of the engine being started. If it was to take two minutes, i'm not sure the engine would last very long being starved of oil for that period of time!

    Incorrect sir for a modern vehicle.
    Warm up is 15- 30 seconds or 1 minute depending on temperature.
    When you let a modern car warm up it makes the fuel mixture rich to start it. Which means excessive idle to warm up will allow rich mixed air to let gas slip into your oil.
    Also most modern cars use synthetic oil so it has really good flow even at really low temps. If it's super cold use your core heater.
    Other then that the whole let your car warm up is something from the days of carburetors as they had to warm up to adjust for mixture.
    Now with fuel injection a computer handles this to account for cold dry air it runs rich.
    So you're better off idling 15 seconds to 1 min then casual driving for the first 5 minutes or until normal temperature is reached . Because driving the mixture won't be as rich since your driving instead of idling allowing the motor to go to a normal operation instead of a start up one.
    I know I use to be a firm believer of the warm.your car for 5 mins minimum in winter. However with some research you'll find its just an old proverb for older cars that got passed down. Don't believe me check out Scotty Kilmer channel

    I'll usually let my car warm up for about 2-5 minutes (at least until the coolant gauge starts to rise). These articles and people say you can drive off 30 seconds must really like replacing transmissions and other things on a car or they sell the old vehicle to someone that ends up having these issues because people are too impatient or think they are wasting fuel.I prefer to spend a little extra on fuel which is not much, because you'll be wasting more fuel when the engine is still cold and driving off.

    • @VintageCars999
      @VintageCars999 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      A few problems with that, you want me to cause an accident trying to get on the freeway by only going 30-40mph because my car hasn't warmed up yet and two i need to be able to see out my windows so i won't cause an accident because my windows are frosting up due to putting extreme cold air on the windshield. Yeah not very smart, i'll keep warming up my car so i am safe, my car works properly and i can make someone else's commute safer by not being a road hazard because you want to drive off 30 seconds after the car has started. No thanks, reason i got a remote starter.

    • @burritobowls
      @burritobowls 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You didn't address having to defrost your windshield.. of course wait until you can see. tf? And unless the highway is your front door step, he is saying drive with a feather foot for the first few minutes.. not 10-20. Also, you shouldn't have to floor it to get onto the highway

    • @VintageCars999
      @VintageCars999 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you should wait until your defroster is working. That alone in colder weather will take at least 3 minutes to work effectively, and 5 min or more in subzero temps. By that time the car is warm enough to use.
      As for flooring it to get on the highway, sometimes there are morons driving slow then speed up at the last moment when you are trying to merge. Sometimes you have to gun it. Most of the time you dont and shouldn't anyway since it could be slick but I dont hold over 2.5x rpms when the car hasnt reached proper operating temperature so yeah its not even fully warmed up by the time I hit the highway. Its a couple of minutes away but if I dont warm my car up over a couple of minutes the cold air wont help my car reach proper temps in the time I need it to.

    • @loodydookyisnoops
      @loodydookyisnoops 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My car would need 15 mins before temp gauge starts to rise, just start it and go, but dont floor it, most of the cars have electric heating which is working until your coolant temp is high eneough to heat, idling your car in cold weather will destroy top end of your engine and cause premature wear on camshafts, you can go fast when your car is cold but you need to accelerate slowly that s all

    the only thing that is important is not revving the engine high when engine is cold. Just sitting there any longer than 30 seconds, after starting, is just wasting fuel. A car will actually warm up quicker if you drive it under 40 mph for first couple miles. The delay key turn really does nothing. Today's fuel injected cars have high pressure in fuel line to either keep fuel at injectors when shut off, or to get fuel there faster so as to not need to delay the key turn. Fresh 5W or 0W oil is what is important. You need low viscosity oil in winter. (0W20, 5W20, 5W30 etc.)

      Gravecb7 Accord false. You can (and should) warm up your car for more than 2 minutes, it literally causes zero damage and it’s worth not having cracked piston rings. Always warm up your car until it’s at it’s normal operating temperature.

    • @funny3scene
      @funny3scene 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gravecb7 Accord I would also strongly suggest looking up how metals expand as they warm. therefore the piston rings which are right next to the occurring combustion, and very thin, would heat up much faster than say an entire engine block. Causing piston ring failure and allowing oil into the cylinders. As for the last thing you said, ALWAYS heat up your car to it’s operating temperature. That is far more than 2 minutes for ANY car around. You’re just ignorant or a troll if you seriously think anything more than two minutes of idling causes any sort of wear.
