  • How Does Cold Weather Affect Your Car Battery. When you turn the ignition key to start your car, everything depends on the battery. Car batteries usually don't have to work very hard in warm weather, but when wintery conditions arrive, the cold can stress your battery and increase the chance of it failing. There are, however, some things you can do to prevent issues and extend your battery's life.

    Well that explains why my poor Caliber wouldn't turn over this morning, after two weeks of -48°c to -50°c weather. I wouldn't want to move either. I'll plug it in, warm the garage and pray it's not my starter.

    This is why I keep my Vette in the garage during winters. I have noticed however that my SUV as well as my truck if I do not start them every 2 or 3 days then I start having problems with batteries durring the winter months.
    At $200 ro $300 for these batteries it gets rather tiring have to replace them due to extreme weather.

      My Vette hibernates in the garage as well!
      Are the batteries on the SUV and truck 4+ years old? If so, they might be getting to the end of their lifespan. New vehicles definitely command more draw on a battery due to all the electrical, so an option maybe a battery maintainer. Otherwise, stick with what you’re doing now by starting and giving the vehicles a good run every few days.

    Is it safe to leave a wall powered trickle charger on a car battery overnight in very cold weather? If so, will that help the battery start the car in the morning?

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just check your particular make of trickle charger - but for the most part they are made to be used in the wet and cold. Is yours a smart charger/maintainer? The smart units avoid overcharging so you can leave them on for long periods of time.

    is jump starting a car bad for the car battery or alternator? i'm having to jump start mine every month since i don't drive alot, and it seems to have some trouble starting sometimes.

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Using jumper cables isn’t necessarily bad for your battery or alternator. It just puts the necessary charge back in your battery to start the car and then the alternator takes over to do the rest.
      However, if you have to boost the vehicle every month; at some point the battery will lose its ability to hold a charge.
      If you don’t drive the car off, I would recommend a battery maintainer. This way your car could sit idle for very long periods of time.

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Riding your electric motorbike in colder temperatures will affect your bikes performance even though it's perfectly fine to do so. The battery will definitely drain faster and it's likely you will see 50% of the normal battery life at freezing. Are you able to bring the bike or battery indoors? If not, thermal blankets / battery warmers will help.

    Hi guys, I just moved to Calgary from BC and the first thing that I've noticed is that everyone has a cable sticking out from their hood. Not sure what this works and where I get find it. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Welcome to Calgary - I did that that move in 2019. What you noticed is a block heater cable (plug). There are different types, but essentially it provides heat to the engine block, coolant, oil,,,,so when it gets to -40 as it did last week, you’re engine should start with no issues. I’ll be explaining the block heater in an upcoming video.

      @@YourHomeGarage thank you so much! I'd love to learn more about block heaters and how to get out installed 🙏

    • @TruckTaxiMoveIt
      @TruckTaxiMoveIt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the main purpose of it is to prevent premature wear of the internal engine parts because the oil congealed due to the extreme cold.
      Essentially is a probe that goes into the oil pan and perhaps other fluid reservoirs to keep your fluids viscous so that when you start the vehicle the could flow properly throughout the internal parts of the engine.
      Please note it has nothing to do with the battery if the battery is frozen it doesn't matter that the engine oil and or the coolant is warm given that this video is about the battery I'm inclined to believe that you associated the two which I doubt is directly connected

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TruckTaxiMoveIt You’re explanation is stop on. And correct on the battery - the block heater cannot keep a battery from freezing. Indirectly the block heater can assist an older (weaker) battery by warming the engine so it turns over quickly. Like you said, if the fluids have thickened, then a battery can die while trying to turn the starter / fly wheel.

    I am stranded at home in Illinois. It is -5 degrees F. Both of my trucks will not start. Tried a jump pack on them and it didn't work. Called a towing company that jump starts for people. They could not get my trucks started. They even hooked up jumper cables from their truck to mine. It did not work. I can't make it to work and I can't go grocery shopping. The windchill is 40 below zero.

      We were -40 Celsius in Canada last week. Without a block heater to warm the engine - there is no way the cars would have started.

    • @TruckTaxiMoveIt
      @TruckTaxiMoveIt ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's understandable that you might not have been able to get your truck started for whatever reason however when you called for that jump service what they should have done when they wasn't able to jump using their cables was to remove their own battery and place it in your truck to start your truck and then to hook up your battery so that it would charge your battery.
      There's a good chance that your batteries were old and needed replacement anyway but if you remove the batteries that and bring it into the house or into a warm area that will bring warmth to the battery so that they can work more properly it takes time for them to warm up as well as to cool down so if you bring them in the house overnight and install it in the morning is a good chance that it will start even if it's undercharged

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is unfortunate, hopefully you were able to boost it. If you were successful in starting it, just test the battery with a multimeter at the first available opportunity - especially load. I have a short video on my channel that shows you how or there are lots of other good video creators out there on TH-cam. You just want to ensure the battery is good and safe for the rest of the Winter or replace if need be. Good luck, stay warm and thank you for the comment.

      @@YourHomeGarage I'm unable to. Road assistance came out and gave me a jump and had the car running for 15 minutes like he said. Came back out to head to the store and it was dead again. 😡 Going to autozone tomorrow to get a new one.

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In most cases, 15 minutes of idling should be good enough. But, during a cold spell a 30 minute drive would be a better option - just an fyi for the future. I believe Autozone charges and tests batteries for free, so just ask them before buying a new one.
