I love how Raphie and Schwartz were the only kids who not only didn't get up with the rest of the class to look out the window, but also looked awkward and guilty as hell in the process. It's perfect.

Like Miss Shields questioning Ralphie, all like “Ralphie, you’re Flick’s friend; surely you must know where he is?” Ralphie like “Don’t look at me!” Miss Shields probably thinking “Hmm, how odd; I bet Ralph is probably lying to me.” Interesting trivia: Until I got my own DVD of this movie(and turned on the subtitles) I could never make out the name of the girl who raises her hand(subtitles say Esther Jane.) It always sounded like “Sister something” to me, which I knew couldn’t be right.

This has always been my favorite Christmas movie. One time I was outside in what the temperature felt like 5 degrees F and I stuck my tongue to a wheelbarrow outside in the back yard. I would’ve been stuck for a while if my dog didn’t start licking my hands and made me start laughing. But when I realized I was stuck I just started thinking of this scene and was trying to figure out how to get out of that situation. Then I did the same thing AGAIN and got my lips frozen to a piece of metal. I thought it was hilarious, but my mom was mad at me fire it like I forced somebody else to do it. Then she scolded me and said “the kid who got straight A’s in the second quarter…”
Oh well, I learned my lesson TWICE.
Believe it or not, his teacher is actually my favorite character. I love her reaction when she sees him outside, the way she says "oh my GOD!". 😂 She looks like every photo of my great-grandmother back in the day. 😂
1:21 the best/worst thing about this scene is how convincing his screams are. Best because it really sells it but worst because when you're like 5 and feel sympathetic for him its heart breaking to hear such legit screams for help.
I still feel uneasy hearing those screams to this day.

33 years later, Flick got revenge on Schwartz by triple dog daring him to ride the Ramp, angry about Schwartz’s beer tap.
A fun fact: Teacher was 6 months pregnant but wanted the job and they wanted her but the story line did not call for a pregnant teacher. So they padded her up to make her a bit bigger and you can't even tell.

When I was about 10 years old, I tried this on the pole for the basketball hoop in my front yard.
I just pulled my tongue right off.
It only bled a little bit.
I don't think my parents ever found out about it.
But I never did it again after that.

This is one of those movies that you never seek out but end up having seen 900 times. This and ‘don’t tell mom the babysitters dead’.
Loved this scene. If you look closely at 2:37 when he’s swinging his arms, his tongue comes off for a split second.
To make it look like his tongue was really sticking they used a vacuum inside the pole with a tiny hole 🕳️ in it.

I'm afraid people will know my age if I bring to attention a commercial from looong ago?...when Ralphie was " Messy Marvin" & he would do anything for chocolate milk! He asked his mother could he paint his tree house?... well he did, including the tree! Black & white striped like a zebra! His mother said with great disdain, "the whole tree Marvin?".....the days of really funny commercials.

When I was about ten, I tested the theory on the metal shelf guard in the freezer. My tongue stuck. I only had to breathe out really hard, and the warmth from that got my tongue free.
Although, I was also in a warm house. Flick was out in the cold, so that might not have worked.

I have seen people put their tongues on frozen flagpoles, a hot stove, and even stick it in a wall socket. But despite all that, they never learn their lesson and go and do it again.

I did that one time and I had to put an actual band aid on my tongue. It was not fun.

Just use a bit of warm water, pour it, and wait a bit then it naturally becomes unstuck again.
i remember in kindergarten this same thing happened, except it was me who got stuck, my teacher put warm water over my tongue to make it come off

It gets down to 8 degrees every winter in the midwest, sometimes 0 or 3, with windchill it can be -30.
It has to at least be below 32F (0 °C) and the pole has to be metal, frozen, yet still looks "dry" on it's surface.
You can actually simulate the same thing with a frozen popsicle.

To do this scene they made a plastic tube and colored it to look like a rusty pole and it was slipped over the real flag pole dont worry his tongue wasnt actually frozen to metal.
That's amazing, although it's pretty easy to unstick a tongue from an actual frozen pole - just use a bit of warm water
