    H. Is Maynard’s son, the snake is the inner anger he feels from his passed abuse. His fear is that this anger will arise against his son. But the more his son touches and changes him, the snake is drowned. When that part of his past dies, that’s why he says it’s alright. That the killing of that part of him was considerate.

During the 1997 Lollapooloza tour Maynard said " This next song is about having children, do any of you have kids? It is amazing how much they change your life isn't it?" They then began to play H.

      It kinda defeats the purpose of Tool if you try to find Maynard's meaning of the songs, not saying you can't, if you want to then go ahead, but to me I'd rather not know what his meaning is and Interpret the music the way I feel/hear it.

  • @grimdevildog11

    I've heard that in 1997 while playing at Lollapalooza, Maynard referenced this song "This next song is about having children, do any of you have kids? It is amazing how much they change your life isn't it?". I'm sure there's some deeper meaning to the song about just how exactly children change your life, but at least we know from The writer's lips what the song is about!

    "H." is a song by the American rock band Tool. The song was released as the second single from their second album, Ænima on March 19, 1997. "H." reached number 23 on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.[1]
    The working title for the song was "Half Empty", and thus "H." most likely stands for that or "Half Full".[2] During several tours, the lead singer of Tool, Maynard James Keenan, has referenced his son, whose middle name is H, just before performances of this song.
    However, on several occasions, specifically on November 23, 1996[3] during a show at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia, Maynard James Keenan does grant some insight into another meaning of the song. Speaking to the audience he says, "So, any of you ever watched those Warner Bros. cartoons? Sometimes there's that one where that guy is having a tough time trying to make a decision. He's got an angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Seems pretty obvious, right? Usually it's the angel who is kind of the one trying to give him the good advice while the devil is trying to get him to do what's bad for him. It's not always that simple though. Most times they're not really angels or devils. They're just friends giving you advice, looking out for your best interest but not really understanding what's going to be best for you. So it kind of comes down to you. You have to make the decision yourself... This song is called H."

    You know, usually I’m all team-Sori but i think I have to break faith a bit today.
    Firstly, from my knowledge, Vin’s interpretation absolutely knocks it out of the park. In fact, it’s so spot-on I have to suspend a bit of disbelief. This was written around the time of Maynard’s first-born (his son). I don’t think the proper subject would be easy to nail down on a first listen. Most others, myself included, would have initially been more inclined to agree with Sori.
    The second big break is on this point of “darkness” - it’s one of the things Tool is loved for, and it kind of shocks me that someone wouldn’t pick up on it. In fact, it’s something that sometimes turns people off of Tool - especially their older content.
    I could see how dissecting Lateralus early on could throw someone off the scent though. Although it has its own moments of darkness, it’s generally far more uplifting than the rest of Tool’s discography. And while I’d say that most of Tool’s music has a generally positive/healthy message, most of the sonic paths they create to get there are completely built around confronting and moving through the darkness of the human experience.
    It’s one of the reasons fans find their work so cathartic; a lot of it centers around being self-reflective and confronting the darkness that can otherwise consume your life. Even if you just reflect on the songs you’ve already heard so far, you can see it. “Jambi” does this. “Wings for Marie (10,000 Days pt. 2)” does this. “Jimmy” does this. “Pushit” does this. “The Patient” does this. “Schism” does this.
    I think the biggest irony here might be that Ænima is hailed almost universally as their darkest album. So much so that many fans who enjoy them for that dark edge actually enjoy it more than Lateralus, which would otherwise generally be considered their magnum opus.
    Don’t fight it Sori...succumb to the power of the dark side!!

    • @musicmademejester
      @musicmademejester 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The first time I heard it, I thought it was about drug addiction. If you listen to it with that in mind, you can defiantly see it being interpreted that way. Especially if that's something you have witnessed or been through. Of course I've known for a while what the songs true meaning is because I have been a fan for a long time but that is great thing about TOOL. They want you to interpret the songs the way you see them. The way you connect with them. Let them be that "tool" for you.

    • @crossofcrimson
      @crossofcrimson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@musicmademejester Yeah, I generally agree with that. I think, especially with Tool, although Maynard probably always writes with a particular thing in mind (in this case, having his first child), I think he purposefully affects a balance between the specific and the general. In that way, it can be specifically therapeutic for him, in the particular, when performing, but can also be therapeutic for the listeners, generally, when listening and going through whatever roughly-related issues they may be facing in their own lives.
      In fact, one of the cool things I've noticed in particular about Tool's music, having been a fan for quite a long time, is that the personal meaning of songs can really move and shift with your own life over time. And it can shift without you changing your mind regarding what the song may have been specifically written about originally. For instance, I think there's very few songs off this album that I personally experience in the same way as I did in 1996-1997. Or even in 2002-2003. Or 2010-2011. It's always been just general enough to shift along with my perspective. And that's pretty cool.

      @musicmademejester 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@crossofcrimson Yeah, I totally agree with all that.

      There are websites where the meaning of this song is discussed. I think Vin is a smart guy, but I highly doubt he could decipher the meaning behind this song on the first listen. I'm sure he does research beforehand. He tends to get his interpretation of Tool songs a little too spot on a little too often. I could be wrong though.

    • @crossofcrimson
      @crossofcrimson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      STAR 420 I actually sympathize with that sentiment. Vin is a very smart guy, but there are moments in some of these interpretations (especially of Tool songs, but other songs as well) where my surprise borders on suspicion. This one triggered that feeling for sure. Another one was the “Forty-Six & 2” interpretation - specifically the chromosomal insight. Even with knowledgeable people, the immediacy of that guess would be a bit beyond reach, particularly because “Forty-Six & 2” describes the (supposed/metaphoric) evolved state (a total of 48 chromosomes), whereas actually existing humans have forty-four and 2 (sex) chromosomes. I’m not saying it’s impossible to land on the reference, especially if you have a biology background or something. But to immediately forward that guess minutes after hearing/seeing the lyrics? Well, it’s definitely a bit of a stretch.
      The thing that’s been getting to me more is that I get the feeling this song-by-song breakdown was actually recorded before the live-listen, as they (oddly) seem surprised in both versions, but more genuinely surprised in the song breakdowns. It didn’t feel that way at all for Lateralus. I know they were leaving town to go to NAMM, and had pre-recorded quite a bit before to give themselves a buffer. I can’t help but feel like these were all recorded before the live-listen, and it just wasn’t said.
      Now, I wouldn’t be upset if the first listen was song-by-song, and the live album-listen came second. But the thought of them being dishonest about it is a bit disturbing. Maybe I’m wrong. I like them quite a bit, so I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. But I can’t say these thoughts haven’t passed my mind.

    The first two Tool albums are awesome! This band has some talent. When I heard this for the first time over 20 years ago, I thought to myself, "Wow...we have a band that has created a unique sound that will last for decades"....I guess that worked!

    Listening to the discussion regarding Maynard's childhood, all i could think was read his biography, it's a great read. "A Perfect Union of Contrary Things"

    This song reminds me to be loving, even if it's just toward a friend or family member. Every person in our lives is an opportunity to "die" again and be reborn as a kinder being. I guess it's a bigbigbigbig deal when you have a child, but I am not at that stage of my life yet.

    Wow, this whole time I thought this was about heroin. Maynard's take on his contemporaries falling to its grasp time and time again. Looking at the lyrics through that lens, it very strongly reminds me of the struggles of an addict. I can get more in depth if anyone is curious.

    My take on the song is its about his son and his son's mother, and his life as a rock star, always on the road and the temptations. The abuse angle works too though. H and 46 & 2 are my favorite songs on this album.

    The song is about choices and people who mean good by helping you with these choices, but end up being poison for you. so you have to sometimes only listen to yourself.
