The reason they don't let you put it in gear is because they know you would be so angry with GM, you'd drive it through the dealership front showroom window.
I was one of the engineers assisting with some of the testing for the Hummer EV. At one point the lead test engineer said he needed my help to open the hood, since it turns out the hood is both power operated and software controlled. If the auxiliary battery of your Hummer EV dies, it will prevent the hood from opening, preventing you from accessing the dead battery, basically sealing itself inside. Additionally, this battery cannot be charged nor accessed anywhere from outside the vehicle. A bit like James May's Tesla battery issue but far far worse. There is a manual open underneath the dash, but it has to be yanked on really really hard with a wrench. I chuckled to the lead test engineer saying "doesn't this seem like it would be a huge problem?" And he replied "yeah, it isn't the first time this has happened".. but seeing this made it to production I guess they didn't care. Don't know why absolutely every feature needs to be electric, sometimes those good old mechanical bits should just stay mechanical, even on the cars of the future.
That battery should be able to recharge from the main battery with a bypass switch. I'm sure it gets low after being in the factory parking lot for who knows how long and flashers, radio, lights will contribute to the injury.
I remember seeing a video of someone trying to fix a semi new Jaguar, the battery was in the boot but had gone flat, but the boot had to be opened electronically with a solenoid, which obviously couldn't happen as the solenoid had no power
Why tf would I or anyone else buy this shot? I can do lots of my own repairs on mechanical vehicles. I’ll keep driven gas powered until they are no more. This whole thing is just a money/power grab by elites. The auto Industry already makes more off of repairs than sales. This will also put small shops out of business as only dealerships will be equipped to repair. The whole thing is not for the benefit of Americans
I bought a Mini SE because it's simple, open the hood and there is the battery, normal door handles etc. Been totally reliable and get 4.6 miles per KW. It actually saves you money and energy which is the point of an EV anyway.
I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler. It has manual crank windows, manual door locks, you start it with a real key, and unlock the doors wit a real key. Everything works fine. Sometimes, simple is best.
I’m sure GM will be glad to see this honest assessment of the situation. The truck was in “brick mode” in the middle of traffic, wow. How about a “limp out of danger” mode GM?
Now imagine being in the north with one of these...it's-40 and you know your lucky if another vehicle will be on that road for hours . Great machine right there . They can keep em on thier lots
U wont be able to charge it in the next war . Also there will never be a reason to road block within the continent . You'll be wanting the roads clear..if you're alive .

@@FrankD71864 yeah for that much money the car should be perfect. Honestly, *any* new car fresh off the dealer lot should be perfect, but for *that* much money? I doubly expect it to be the most amazing, trouble free truck on the market.
The fact that Onstar was almost useless is the most damning part of this story. With a little help they could've had that Hummer back on the road in a few minutes. Instead of telling you how to open the hood they sent a tow truck.
@@scottreasons4746 If I understood this situation the problem was that they didn't know how to pop the hood, so they couldn't reboot the truck. I blame OnStar for not being ready with some simple troubleshooting tips. That being said "useless" is probably too strong a word.
Many new smart phones can call for emergency during a crash so OnStar is truly useless ita not an over statement Also with mandates for authority's to be able to shut down cars in the near future it's hard to believe they couldnt fix or reboot the hummer from onstar
You guys need to put the tow truck drivers info in the description, that guy was super patient and now knows a bit more to possibly help future buyers stranded in this vehicle. Thanks for posting the video!!
Yeah, officer, and tow driver, the face to face members of society, were personal, and professional... the computer, and corporations, were a labyrinth of occlusion, behind a fog of war, silver lined in a sweet candy coating
Different stuff here, he has some video evidence to help a tech diagnose. But this new of a vehicle with so few out their this should go to the engineering team to investigate a serious safety issue. a recall till this has fix for the issue. Mechanic/tech at a dealership
If the dealership is dumb, but if the dealership is smart it will be there for weeks until the vehicle is fixed, stop this propaganda and start asking questions
Hummers have a fine, and well deserved, reputation for unreliability. GM simply doesn't want to ruin its reputation just because this one doesn't have so many moving parts.
What was that horrible anti-social noise when the doors were shut?! Car alarm to protect a brick? I hope that can be turned off, no way I could use that on a night shift!
@@stpfs9281 a physical cable or lever to put it into neutral wouldnt be a bad idea, or maybe a separate motor hooked up to the power supply to limp it out of danger would be smart too
My 2006 H3 has rarely had any issues and wouldn't give her up for anything. She's da man! Maybe other models have issues. All I could think while watching this was "F that software running my car s*hit." The only time I've had a similar situation with the H3 was when I accidentally hit the "low" button not long after purchase. Thank God I was in a parking lot AND had a hardcopy manual. OnStar did the same thing and called for a tow, the dealer said they had no idea why I could only go 12 miles p/h, so no help there. The manual explained it and I fixed it so no tow needed. Can't imagine going through that on a larger scale like these guys with the computer running everything. Oy.
Seriously props to that tow truck driver I would have taken something for my time but I guess he got some advertising out of it. The guy should of at least got like $100 though for his time but again just a really patient man.
And that’s why trucks (semi trucks and heavy duty [light-ish medium-ish duty pickup trucks} Pickup trucks) should be gasoline (petrol) or diesel (petrol but runs cleaner in the engine?) not electric
@@Bellathebear777 My dad put more than a million miles on his H2. Put a turbo and whatever else to get 600hp out of it and towed other vehicles, forklifts etc on a trailer. People would leave notes about how he's ruining the world on the windshield and he had a few breakins since it was a juicy looking target in hotel parkinglots. He likes his Toyota Landcruiser more now. It draws no negative attention. He sold the hummer with a freshly bored engine to an employee for less than the engine renovation cost.
A GM with electrical problems? Never heard of that before. I think its a good idea to make one that runs on electric only. Next week we'll do a Chrysler!
Facts. I got an 03 gmc envoy with 300k . Never any electric problems. My 2016 malibu with 46k had them all. Shifter wouldn't work , couldn't get the car out of drive was the biggest. The windows not working is a regular thing these days. Steering column warning happened twice.

First it was Tommy's problem with one of the button's during the off road test, now it refuses to move?? I hope GM looks at this seriously, this is NOT a good look!
Never buy first year models. With all of this tech that needs to work together on lines of code… it only takes one misplaced ; and the whole system dies
The Hummer they tested off road was a LOANER from GM, so it may have been abused quite a bit before it reached them, but even so. The vehicle should be built with more tactile buttons and less electric computer controlled items...
I was under the impression those were two different vehicles. The one that they took off roading was a loaner from GMC, and the one in this video is a different one that they purchased.
Can you imagine if this happened while crossing treacherous terrain in a mountain or in the middle of crawling a steep incline? You guys were lucky to experience this closer to home where help can arrive fairly quickly.
Most owners probably do not even know that even a 10,000 lbs megabatterypack EV still has an ancient 12V battery hidden somewhere. That they can't reach in an emergency 🙂
That is my greatest fear with my Mercedes EQS which does not permit access to the frunk where the 12v battery is located. I will probably get a new one every 36 months to avoid a similar experience.
I’m going to be honest no I wouldn’t have thought that it had a regular battery I thought that it all ran off of the big powerful battery, of course I have never owned a electric vehicle.
As a former Range Rover owner... I want to argue with you. I've NEVER ever EVER had so many repairs in 2 years (before selling it) in any other vehicle in my life. Want to know how much it will cost you to tow a Range Rover where no standard sane Tow Trucks will go? Between $3000 and $4000. And no, the warranty does NOT cover those tow charges.
@@Erin-Thor got an 11 RRS Lux with the 5.0, 160k and no issues. Only complaint I have is they are a pain to get a proper alignment done. Most Indy shops don’t know how to line one out properly.

Oh, and 1 transmission issue and one replacement. When the transmission began showing issues again I sold it.
Surprisingly enough my grandad only ever had issues with two discoveries a Series II Fuel pump failure and the rear camera on his Disco 4. Realistically now both those repairs should be piss easy because the parts are on the used market.

@@thumbsdownclub7514 nah I doubt it. He looked like a positive guy. Most tow companies are just normal people there to help. Don't let a few people ruin the reputation of everyone.
That hood release ring under the dash is a good thing to know! No matter whether it is full electric or hybrid, it's valuable to know where the 12 volt battery (usually an AGM sealed lead acid) is, and how to get to it, when everything goes 'dead'. I've had to disconnect the 12 volt battery to reset my 2006 second generation Toyota Prius hybrid. Make sure you keep the tools necessary in the car/truck, so you can actually disconnect the battery terminal.
The best car I've ever owned was a 1990 Mercedes 190e with the 2.6. I kept it till 2016. Changed it for another lightly used one and it runs well. We should have the choice to drive simple vehicles if we want to. I only need a radio.
This is happening to a lot of expensive vehicles. You guys should do a whole segment on this. Listen to ppl dealing with lemons and have them come on your channel, random shut downs, etc.. Call out these companies, hold them accountable.
I think they are aware that there are issues in other vehicles, but the point they are trying to make is how this issue left the owner stranded in a dangerous situation. But more importantly, the vehicle lacked intuitive controls or mechanisms that would allow the user to reset the system.
My new GMC AT4 was dead in my driveway the first day with 180 miles on it. It was stuck in what I call “accessories mode”. Fan was on at full speed could not turn fan down or off, could not start engine and could not shut the It off or get it in neutral. Dealer said it was a bad battery, well yeah the batter died after it sat stuck in my driveway all day with the accessories on. The dealer put a new battery in the car assured me that fixed the problem, a few days later check engine light is back on. 3 weeks later check engine light has been on every day, dealer said I hit a bird and took out a shutter on the front grille and he was so proud to show me the missing shutter, The service advisory was confident that was the problem and would order the shutter assembly. He was a little embarrassed when I asked if he ordered enough to fix all the new AT4’s on the lot, he looked at me confused when I said all his trucks on the lot must have also hit a bird as they were also “missing” the same shutter vane. I then explained that the truck never had the Vane and it was designed that way. I should have stuck with the ugly Tundra, but one more service appointment and I qualify for lemon law.
Thank you for showing us another example of why you should NEVER buy the first model. ESPECIALLY a whole new concept and technology for $115k! Love your videos!!
I mean someone will have to be the guinea pig for the first models. The new V6 Toyota Tundra had engines issues however unlike GM, Toyota fixes and refines their vehicles meanwhile GM we get these clunkers
Dont buy any ev untill atleast another 5 years until they work out the troubles if they can, at this point as said in another video these are really just over priced toys if you have 115, 000 or 140, 000 just to throw away and im sure most of the population doesn't.
This is a totally unacceptable issue with the Hummer EV. Due to the long-distance trailer towing attributes of all EV trucks. I will be keeping my 2006 Chevy Duramax Dually for a while longer! Great video!
Keep that thing for as long as you can. I have a 2021 F150 and I cannot wait for the lease to expire so I can get rid of it. I never had any issues with my old school trucks before it. This F150 is nothing but problems
I have a friend that just bought one of these and he’s had nothing but problems as well. Less the 1500 Miles the same thing happened 3x. He’s having Buyers remorse and returning it to the dealership.
I’ve never had a computer that didnt have issues/glitches at some point. To think that nearly all functions of the vehicle you are in traveling 80 mph down the road are software controlled is terrifying when you actually think about it. Thanks for the honest account of this experience- eye opening for sure!
I had water leaking in to my 2017 f150 v8 XLT and it was shifting me from 2 high to 4 high automatically. Computers shouldn’t be in vehicles controlling major functions that could get you killed.
It's insane that something like this could happen with any of the other Hummer EVs on the road. Imagine this happening on a highway, or a simple route.
Usually when gm vehicles lose power completely, the open and close windows is for re calibration of the auto up down. But good to know gm still has steering rack issues!

Hey now. My dad's 12 valve left him stranded once. Granted it had 650k miles on it and it was a issue with his mechanical pump... but it did leave him stranded!
I put a 12v cummins in an old suburban i can fix it myself and if i need parts i take back some empties and get the few bucks needed for parts. Cheap, reliable and built to last. 3 things new vehicles seem to lack
I was the owner of a 1st gen Tourage which had a bad battery and we had to tow however it was stuck in park and the tow driver/owner used a bottle of dishwashing soap to grease the ramp and it was so easy! Thank you Ronny at Alton Edge Towing!

A true GMC to me was a small cargo van that was super reliable and simple to work on…I’m talking about a 1985 GMC Safari V6 4.3L (Chevy Astro) that my parents drove all the way to Guatemala and back to California with no troubles. I really miss the era of good cars.
A square body GMC or Chevy truck with a 350ci and turbo 350 transmission = few problems and easy/ cheep to fix. This "Hummer" reminds me of the black box tech in Apple products. Lol I wonder how long I could keep the before mentioned GMC/ Chevy truck going for $115,000.00 !
I bought into the EV craze, partially, when in 2014, I bought a first gen Volt. From that day on I was at the stealer at least once a month for one thing or another. Four years of utter grief later, I bought a gas powered truck and never looked back.
Should have bought a gen 2 instead. 😆 The second version and onward of anything is always better. Cars, phones, computers. Allow the manufacturer to have enough time to work out the bugs that they thought weren't there.

In my experience with other GM vehicles with indexing windows after disconnecting the battery you are prompted to cycle each window. That part looked normal. Overall this is an embarrassing failure for GM. I appreciate your coverage.
Things happen. Decades ago the same thing happen to me in my VW Jetta. It just plain shout down on the highway, in the rain. Since that was long before cell phones I had to hike down the embankment and find a pay phone to call for service. Luckily, I was only a block from a major intersection with a gas station. The only thing that would have made that breakdown worse would have been if it happened at night. BTW, the malfunction was a faulty fuel pump. Something I found out later was not uncommon for VW. Although this was one of the first new models.
Roman acted like a spastic child. I had to skip through most of the video because of his panic stricken ramblings. Tommy saved the day and the video. What do you want to bet they say they can't find anything wrong with it. Watching all the BS it prompted you to do reminded me of the torture of getting a new phone. You can't make a new one do half the crap you want because it doesn't work like the old one. So I guess that means with an ev you have to "relearn" everything every time you get another one. Pathetic stupidity is what an ev is.
This is going to be a problem because some EVs stay in park when there is a malfunction. If you don't get off the road you're stuck. You can imagine how dangerous this could be in certain situations.

Same goes for the Dodge Ram with the rotary knob shifter thing... sucker stays in park if you don't have the key and enough battery power to turn on the electronics. It could be just bad luck, as all first year vehicles suffer some infant mortality, but I suspect that it is not. Some 2021 Broncos blew up in short order, but many more have been relatively trouble-free. I would pick Ford over GM just about 100% of the time, especially for a 1st year vehicle.

Trust TFLT? They cover for Ford constantly but right they're super trustworthy LMFAO. Why didn't they ever cover the major lawsuit against Ford by all the owners with 10-speed issues. TFL didn't hesitate to cover GM's 8-speed lawsuit, yet they went out of their way to suppress coverage of Ford 10-speed lawsuits. Roman is a Ford fanboy and his auto coverage reflects that constantly. How much coverage did he give to all the Bronco's with junk engines? How much coverage did he give to F-150 owners with junk transmissions? How much coverage did he give to all the guys with Ecoboosts that were going through timing chains and had brake failures due to junk master cylinders? He covered GM trucks with vaccuum booster failures but when F-150 owners had random brake failures due to junk master cylinders, that got swept under the rug, even after Ford lied about the breadth of the issue and it later turned out that they lied about how many trucks built 2015 or later had that junk master cylinder.
It’s on page 350/352 in the manual. It’s basically recommending to lower the suspension, put vehicle in service mode, and put it in neutral. It will stay in neutral up to a certain speed.
Coal powered vehicles aka EV's are only viable when the government forces you to buy one or it tries to bribe you to buy one. No thanks. If they were any good, people would be pounding down the doors to buy them - instead we have failure after failure, power outages and unicorn dreams.
Then you missed the entire point that he was making about the issue being the computers controlling the motors which is a concern for both EV's and ICE.
THAT is exactly why I treasure my '07 Silverado with its simple L59 and 4 speed tranny. It burns only 4 oz of oil every 3,000 miles, starts every time, and I don't have to argue with computers.
That's what I was thinking. If I experienced something like this I would have serious trust issues in the future. There's enough careless drivers on the road to worry about without having to worry about a vehicle failing like this at any time much less right after driving it off the dealership lot.
Imagine being in that situation in 105° heat with your family (toddlers/baby) on a road trip in the middle of nowhere. No thanks. I’ll stick with my 4Runner.
Bonus points for being able to put it in neutral and push it out of the roadway even if it does break, lol. GM straight up just bricking cars on the roadway.

How about just friggin run mode???

The dealer put a new battery in the car assured me that fixed the problem, a few days later check engine light is back on. 3 weeks later check engine light has been on every day, dealer said I hit a bird and took out a shutter on the front grille and he was so proud to show me the missing shutter, The service advisory was confident that was the problem and would order the shutter assembly. He was a little embarrassed when I asked if he ordered enough to fix all the new AT4’s on the lot, he looked at me confused when I said all his trucks on the lot must have also hit a bird as they were also “missing” the same shutter vane. Exactly.
EV's are the Betamax and VHS of the 2020's.
@@dartmoordave I'd say they're more Laserdisc. High tech and futuristic, but expensive, unreliable, and just generally less practical than the alternative.
@@tbr2109 😄👍

Even if u get the vehicle in a neutral there isn't really a transmission it is electric motors so you can potentially damage them if you move the vehicle without it "running" there is a proper tow procedure that must be followed or u void warranties
"we brought it home, hooked it up to the Internet and made sure all the software was up to date"
Who ever thought we'd have to say that about a new Hummer... Big red flag right there.
My 2022 Forester and Tiguan both receive software updates.
Don't need to do any of that on my 64 chevy. Just get in, turn the key, and haul ass.
My Alfa Romeo communicates through my app on my phone. Tells me when a new software update is available and once it also asked me to upgrade my phone 😳🤣 The updates are super easy. Download from the web onto a stuck and then feed it to the USB port. That's it. The dealer also checks the software for relevance when required but they can do it wirelessly via Bluetooth.
I never had t do that with old fangled
gas powered cars of the 70s 80s or 90s...
And, I wonder why ??????
@@barbusie5217 carburetor, which is also the reason why you had to idle for 5-10 minutes before driving, since you had no fuel injection. Fuel injection has to be controlled by an ECU. On top of that, you had electric windshield wipers and some electric door locks, which can help prevent locking keys in your car, and your windshield wipers don't slow don't when you go up hills (vacuum powered) but yes keep telling younger generation your old decrepit technology was better even though a 5 second Google search and listening to old people talk for 5 minutes will prove you wrong. The best combination will be either diesel electric (like on diesel electric locomotives) or gas electric. These are not hybrids they use fuel and only fuels the electricity is powered but onboard generators which are powered by the ICE, and is us led only for electrical systems and applying torques to the axles.
In my experience with other GM vehicles with indexing windows after disconnecting the battery you are prompted to cycle each window. That part looked normal. Overall this is an embarrassing failure for GM. I appreciate your coverage.
Most vehicle with autodown and autoup window will need to reset limts when the battery is cycled. You could dismiss that notice.
Yeah as though window regulators never go out, not to mention using them in rain is what deteriorates them.

Tommy is so good with his reviews and is endlessly patient with his dad.
The no easy access to the 12V battery when its dead seems to be a common design feature of EVs in general.
Imagine buying GM and not expecting this
Just when you thought Russian cars were crap, GM says “hold my vodka”.
This is going to be a problem because some EVs stay in park when there is a malfunction. If you don't get off the road you're stuck. You can imagine how dangerous this could be in certain situations.
Almost all cars are switching to electronic shift so you can't even put the car into neutral to even get it out of traffic or other dangers.
@@cheesecurd100s manufacturers should consider adding a backup mechanical method of shifting of the electronics fail. You should be able to switch to it by like a hidden compartment button. :/ Though, I'm no car mechanic or even remotely knowledgeable on cars so I don't know if that's possible.
Same goes for the Dodge Ram with the rotary knob shifter thing... sucker stays in park if you don't have the key and enough battery power to turn on the electronics. To manually put it in neutral you have to basically open up a panel on the dash with a screwdriver and yank on a hidden release cable.
On the upside, if you're stuck on the road with a fire, that probably reduces the likelihood of a brushfire that might get ignited on the roadside. (Not a serious comment)
@@sanfayyaad they do always have an unlock button often hidden near the shift lever. Idk about new cars with fully electronic gear selection.
Thank you for posting this video! Some of us need the ability to respond to emergency calls (at the hospital, etc). This kind of occurrence could be a serious problem. RELIABILITY is very important to us consumers.
This is exactly the scenario that happens when your the first to rush out and buy a new production vehicle.

@@Jerry.V thanks to GM for tainting EVs.
You better wait for a model to be at least 2 or 3 years old. The time statistics comes out
Somebodies gotta buy em so the rest of us don’t have to go through this
This is the same issue that some have had with the C8, which is the first vehicle to use GM's new OTA upgradeable software suite. It's likely this could happen on any new GM product.
OTA, all vehicles bricked, brilliant.
Thank you for letting us all learn through your experiences. Sorry this happened to you guys and hopefully it will be resolved with no more issues. Anyone in that area needs to use that tow truck driver. Heck of a nice guy.

so the Lightning made it to the Arctic Circle and back and the Hummer made it....200 miles?
That GM quality!
They are leading the ev race 😆 🤣 😂 😹
It could be just bad luck, as all first year vehicles suffer some infant mortality, but I suspect that it is not. Some 2021 Broncos blew up in short order, but many more have been relatively trouble-free. I would pick Ford over GM just about 100% of the time, especially for a 1st year vehicle.

i think there should be physical neutral button to prevent the electronics from leaving stuck in a spot.
With EVs they are mostly direct drive and don't have a transmission like a normal vehicle. Even with a neutral lever it would be hard to drag or tow

The Window stuff was to calibrate the auto up/down fonction. This is something you have to do after taking the battery off on most cars. This is the first vehicle I've seen that actually ask you to do the procedure on the dash.
I was getting on here to say the same thing. I think it's silly that they have you do it right away when there are other problems going on. There should be a skip option.
@@timwiley1844 there was. It says dismiss for each one right on the dash.
Yukons, Corvettes etc require the window to be indexed and displays it on dash.
All GM vehicles with Auto windows do this when the battery is disconnected. My 14 silverado does this as well.
there is a skip option. it said (dismiss) for all of that window calibration . they just had a bit of a helmet fire. and clearly were not familiar with window calibration which has been a thing for a long time. all they had to do at that point was hold the pedal like it said.
You may also want to look for the video of Rob Schneider where his Tesla bricked itself in the middle of the road. This is going to be a big recall to not let this happen.

You are the reviewers I trust the most. Thanks for always bringing us the good with the bad. Having a 115K truck die in traffic has got to be frustrating. Roman handled it better than I would have. Glad y'all are safe.
GM better start opening classes at the dealership like apple store, so you could learn how to operate their vehicles.
Good luck, there's a reason that GM built a tailgate so you're more comfortable waiting for the tow truck 🤣🤣🤣
More like having requirement of emergency manual releases for like towing & doors & this is for ALL EV's not just the hummer

Every time I listen to you about electric vehicles it makes me more convinced that we're just not ready to abandon the internal combustion engines.
So either way shits getting worse

That's what I was thinking. If I experienced something like this I would have serious trust issues in the future. There's enough careless drivers on the road to worry about without having to worry about a vehicle failing like this at any time much less right after driving it off the dealership lot.
