If you are sad, depressed, heartbroken, frustrated...the best way to recover is to dive in feet first and HELP OTHERS! Volunteer anywhere you can, as often as you can. Animal shelters, homeless shelters, boys and girls clubs, hospitals, nursing homes, etc. By helping others you will overcome your personal hardships. Trust me. I know this first hand. It really, truly works.

You are absolutely right. This is called "seva" in the Indian Dharma traditions including Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikkhism. Our depressions and suffering are a result of our attachment to our mental images of ourselves (ego). When you go and do "seva", you relinquish your attachment to your bodily and mental comfort. Slowly you start chipping away this ego and realise that you don't NEED to live up to that image in your head to be happy. Making your entire life a service to others without any expectations, makes you let go of the ego and flow with the flow of the universe. That's happiness and joy.

His lectures are truly eye openers for many people. I cannot help but think that if I can continue to reinforce these messages of his about fear, depression, and other ways of suffering in the world, I will finally be able to overcome my severe/extreme case of depression, my social anxiety, and any other mental illnesses that I may have. The mind is a powerful thing; it is foolish to just waste it away, either because the body seems to be doing badly or for whatever other reason.

@girjaye I'm not so sure. Those decisions were, unfortunately, in the hands of people elected to political office. And, also unfortunately, many people will vote with their emotion regarding issues for which candidates claim to stand.
The "freedom for security" aspect is often only seen in hindsight, but the point is valid that we've sacrificed too many freedoms to fear of terrorism. Until things like the TSA and PATRIOT act are gone, I think it will continue, this institutionalized fear.

@BhudhaLovesBudlight: Walk up to a bear without fear? How would you know that it is a bear without fear? It may be afraid & maul you in self defence. LOL
Seriously, fearlessness means we don't have to be afraid of the bear & kill it in self-defence if the bear is not threatening us. If it is threatening us but we can get to safety, we still don't have to kill it. Fearlessness does not mean foolhardiness - walking up to a bear. Fearlessness has to be combined with common sense & wisdom.

Don't you think that's the reason you still have a small place, old car and no companion. Because you became content and stopped trying hard. If you don't try hard no pressure of doing things and no passion you will have nothing to look forward to. I am afraid if everyone feels this way there will be no progress in the world.
