    Fun fact: Anne Boleyn was the only Queen Consort who was crowned with the St. Edward's Crown during her coronation. A crown usually reserved for crowning the reigning monarch, so her coronation was quite a statement. She was 6 months pregnant with the future Elizabeth I which symbolizes crowning the unborn child as the heir which they thought would be a male.

I hope she has a new crown, maybe one that looks a little like those feathery starburst hats she wears so well. I am excited to see what is chosen. I think The King will want her to wear Queen Elizabeth 1937 crown to make everyone realize she is the Queen now

    The Bohemian Crown is an extraordinary piece of craftsmanship!
    I too wonder, as others have commented, what the British public (note I'm Australian) might feel about a new crown being made for Camilla. There are several choices she could make from the collection. Either way, she will look stunning!!
    Thanks again mate, cheers.

    The Bohemian crown is absolutely stunning in its delicate beauty -- a true work of art. I also hope that Camilla avoids the Koh-i-Noor and selects from one of the other existing crowns. I'd be curious, too, to see what a "modern" creation would look like, but I wonder how the public would feel about the expense involved with that sort of project.

    • @dianalindeman1644
      @dianalindeman1644 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sweptashorestudio The only reason to omit the Koh I Noor is that Queen Consort Camilla is unworthy to wear it.

    • @MrBulky992
      @MrBulky992 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Kohinoor could easily be removed from the Queen Mother's crown and replaced with another gemstone. Queen Mary's crown currently contains a rock crystal replica of the Kohinoor so that could be used at a pinch.
      But what a waste not to use the original and what a precedent to set. Basically, no one would ever use it or see it in future as none of the numerous claimants would ever be able establish any legal right to it. Also, valuable jewels have previously been returned to one particular country (India) and never seen again because they are too expensive to insure for public display. It sounds like a "scorched earth" policy.

If the Koh-i-noor presents an issue, could it be substituted with a similar diamond, or perhaps even a lesser stone? That might avoid controversy. You make an interesting point about a new crown showcasing contemporary work. However, wouldn't a new crown run the risk of appearing "extravagant?" I suppose that could be defused if the King and Queen were to pay for such a crown personally.

    We can do nothing about it, but Mary II was the daughter of James II and should have worn the St Edward's crown, not her miserable little husband. Too bad the attitude towards queens still seemed to be a hangover from that towards Matilda about 500 years earlier. This was in spite of the fact there had been two regnant queens, Mary I and Elizabeth I before Mary II.

    Thank you for this - especially for voicing your doubts about the crown in the Museum of London being the one for Mary of Modena (at least in its present form). I always found that difficult to believe, but I've never found anyone else who believes the same way. Nevertheless it remains a mystery what happened to M of M's coronation crown. Unlike later consort's crowns it was made at public expense and so in theory should have remained legally part of the crown jewels (like the corresponding state crown and diadem), or at the least, if it was disposed of it there should be some official record of that.

    • @allanbarton
      @allanbarton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a great mystery - I think she took her crown with her when she went to the continent. We know that James II took some other jewels with him, including the Stuart Sapphire now in the Imperial State Crown - so it plausible. I was unable to find in the course of my research any evidence of the provenance of the crown in the Museum of London. The Museum's records are next to useless in that respect. My real suspicion, given the size and that the crown is made of gilded base metal set with quartz, is that this is in fact an early 18th century votive crown from a statue of the Virgin Mary.

    13:40 the Kohinoor was not actually an heirloom of the Sikh Empire. To begin with, the Sikh Empire didn’t really last long enough to have heirlooms.
    The Kohinoor belonged originally to the Hindu Kakatiya Kings and several others subsequently, each looting it after defeating the last owner in battle - until the British obtained it from the Sikh Empire.

    The controversy of showing the Koh-I-Noor would be a distraction. Couldn’t the Queen Mother’s crown be used with a coloured stone set in the front? That would be my preferred option.
    A completely new crown would seem extravagant in the present economic circumstances and I believe KC3 wishes to cut out unnecessary expense.

As an aside, a video breaking down the distinctions between a circlet, diadem, corolla, and whatever one calls the tiny head dress that Queen Victoria wore would be brilliant. Like dogs to spilt gravy, I assure you, we would certainly lap up that content! LOL
    Looking at the photograph of Queen Alexandra, not only is she burdened and heavily laden with pearls, I suspect she might have been quite the expert at holding her breath considering such restrictive garments! Finally, I should hope Queen Camilla will have a crown crafted specifically for her. It will come as no surprise that I share your reasoning on that point as well. What a joy these videos are for me. Bless you, Allan!

      @Terry C: the crown that (probably) originated as the mortuary crown of Edward the Confessor was the old St Edward's crown destroyed in 1649.

    Allan I don't know why I'm still feeling a bit sad and disappointed as I always imagined the vision of The King and Queen being Enthroned, both in full Regalia, holding Sceptres and Rod. Alas The Queen's hands will be empty, without her Sceptre and Rod. To me it feels like a big mistake.

    The last three crowns are lovely, but I think they're too big and tall, plus the controversy of the diamond is not something to be desired on a day that should be happy and glorious. I think given the Queen Consort's low-key and no fuss personality, an elegant, modern, and modest crown should be fashioned for her. They could modify any of the ones already in the vault, it doesn't have to be a new one from scratch. But truly, I hope she doesn't wear a crown with "the diamond".

      @@lenwilkinson672 Well, you and I are in agreement over that issue, but Queen Camilla has enough to contend with regarding the late PoW devotees. She doesn't need to add anything else to her plate, especially something that has absolutely nothing to do with her.

    I had thought that His Majesty King Charles the third has announced that Her Majesty Queen Consort Camilla would not wear the Queen Consort's crown, due to the controversy over the koh-i-noor diamond.

    • @allanbarton
      @allanbarton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No announcement has been made - there has been plenty of speculation among the more ill-informed press, who seem to think there is only one crown available for the consort and do not realise that a new crown has been made for all four of the previous consorts and that these remain. It would be a small matter for a crown to be provided or adapted without the Koh-i-noor in it, that diamond being only a recent addition to the regalia. Although of historical value, the crowns are primarily working, symbolic objects and the expectation is that these objects are adapted for each successive reign. Both St Edward's crown and the Imperial State crown have already gone off to be altered for the king.

    • @gregorymartin6488
      @gregorymartin6488 ปีที่แล้ว

      Over the centuries the Crowns have been continually changed for many reasons, the koh-i-noor is only a recent addition to the crown jewels and first used for the coronation of Queen Alexandra in 1902, been of significant Indian origin and association, it most likely was there to indicate the Queen was also the Empress of India, Queens Mary and Elizabeth (The Queen Mother) were also the Empresses of India but Queen Elizabeth II was not and neither is Queen Camilla, for that reason alone its reasonable to assume the diamond will be removed or another crown made or adapted...
