I always enjoy how Horners like Somalis became Muslim. Literally the prophet sending his own family into the Horn of Africa before the Hijra to Madinah. That’s how. There is even a mosque still standing with two qiblas. Which means it was built before the change. Incredible.

you are misguided, Brunei is not the first area to convert to Islam, the first Islamic kingdom is in Aceh, and Aceh is historical and realistic evidence of how Islam is very strong and the first in the Malay region.

9:31 It was not that simple. Since 1578, the Portuguese had to deal with a huge crisis back home. The death of the ambitious and young king Sebastian in Morocco, leaving no descendants, generated a huge succession crisis in the Portuguese kingdom.
His cousin, king Phillip II of Spain, got the opportunity to seize the Portuguese throne, unifying both kingdoms. This put the Portuguese in a huge trouble, as they had good relations with the English and the Dutch, while the Spanish were fighting wars against them.
Because of that, Portugal lost almost all of its Indian Ocean ports, and were also losing the richest territories in Brazil to the Dutch.
It was only in 1640 that the Portuguese revolted against the Spanish and regained their independence. But it was too late for them to challenge the English and Dutch status quo in Asia. They reconquered Brazil and had some luck in finding gold in the Brazilian countryside. Because of that, they concentrated their efforts in maintaining Brazil, then a no-man land that they were relegating in the times of the Indian conquests.
But, yes, the Portuguese were extremely brutal against the Muslims. They even murdered entire cities in India because of their extremism. Cities which had rulers that were willing to negotiate a fair deal with them, if they were more tolerant. This attitude made the word spread in the region and people started to fiercely resist them in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Yeah, the Portuguese didn't just abandon Malacca and Jakarta (the Portuguese was actually the first European to control the port of Kalapa a.k.a Batavia a.k.a Jakarta after it was purchased from the Kingdom of Sunda). The Dutch took over both cities by conquest because, at that time, Portugal was in personal union with Spain which was at war with the Netherlands.

In Singapore, Islam became a minority after the Sultan of Johor gave the island to the British and the British encouraged mass migration to Singapore to work on the port. Even though Islam is a minority, lots of food is halal. Theres a shariah court (for divorce) and a separate Muslim registry for marriages, and we even have a minister dedicated to the affairs of Muslims.

But I'd add somethings to it; for instance, the first recorded Muslim polity dates back to the XII Century, which was the Kedah Sultanate, located in today's northwestern Malaysia. Also, many Muslims, instead of leaving China, married local Chinese, which actually helped to spread the faith further. And one last thing I'd add is that the Muslim regions of Southeast Asia also include the southern Philippines, which to this day have a large Muslim population.

Nor was there any mention of the importance of local imams and saints that spread Islam around, especially in the Indonesian archipelago. There were 9 muslim scholars in Indonesia headquartered in Javanese island when Demak Sultanese was established. They are often called The Nine Waliyullah. They taught Islamic practices including fiqh, aqeedah, and thareeqah. They got in to the society by promoting Islam through Javanese traditional art such as wayang, poetry, etc. Now Indonesia has muslim as majority and has the biggest amount of hajj pilgrims in the world every year. Thanks for the review anyway my brother Syawish. Regards from Jakarta, Indonesia.

Oh that's interesting, what you say here about the Hui Chinese: I had heard of them being a Muslim Chinese minority group, but I assumed most of the Islamic influence in China was in the Xinjiang area (which you talked about previously). Looking it up now, Hui seems to include both people from the land-based Silk Road as well as the sea route you talk about here. I didn't realize there was another route of influence, from over the seas.

The religion was named "kapitayan". In the policts of the Capitaly they believe that God is only one and is not shaped. In this religion there is also fasting, even his worship movement is similar to the muslim's prayer movement. This "kapitayan" religion is brought by 2 people who survived the great flood in the past. and when Islam is entering Indonesia, Islam is directly accepted by the wider community because all its religious concepts are similar to the ancestral religion

Ancient India exerted a profound influence over Southeast Asia through trade, religious missions, wars and other forms of contact. Pre-colonial Malaysia was part of 'Indianised Kingdoms' such as Srivijaya, Kadaram and the Majapahit, which formed part of a cultural region known as Greater India. There is a possibility that the first wave of migration from South Asia towards Southeast Asia happened during Asoka's arrival towards Kalinga and Samudragupta's, The ancient Indian Kalinga was located in southeastern India occupying modern day Orissa and northern Andhra Pradesh. In the 7th century an Indonesian kingdom was named Kalingga after the aforementioned Kalinga in India. Chinese sources mention this kingdom (Holing) as a center for Buddhist scholars around 604 before it was overshadowed by the Sanjaya or Mataram Kingdom. The most famous Kalingga ruler is Maharani Ratu Sima atau Shima putri, Syailendra putra Santanu (Sriwijaya) adalah istri Raja Kalingga Kartikeyasinga, Ayahanda Kartikeyasinga adalah Raja Kalingga (632-648) M. Sementara ...Dikenal atas: Ratu Kerajaan Kalingga (674-695) In Malaysia the existence of Indianised kingdoms such as Gangga Negara, Old Kedah, Srivijaya since approximately 1700 years ago. Early contact between the kingdoms of Tamilakkam and the Malay peninsula had been very close during the reigns of the Pallava dynasty (‪from the 4th to the 9th‬ century) and Chola dynasty (‪from the 9th to the 13th‬ century ), prior to arrival of Islam, Malaysia was a predominantly HINDU-BUDDHIST dharma religious country, JAI hind, shanti Aum 🕉🙏.’

Indonesia only gained independence from the Netherlands after WWII. The guy who began this colonisation, JP Coen, still has a huge statue in the Netherlands, it is ridiculous! This creates the social division between santri (those who're practicing common islam) and abangan ( who're practicing syncritised form of islam / sonewhat more animistic). The real islamisation actually begin after the fall of sukarno, to prevent any communism activities (which at that time associated with syncritised group)

Very interesting video. I am an Indonesian moslem. From all the history I study in school. We Indonesian believed that Islamisation of Indonesia is because of the traders.
Moslem sailor & traders from Gujarat India, Yemen, China etc was spreading islam in the port city and gaining followers because of the unjust Buddhist and Hindu's rullers.
There was also many moslem working in the court of many Kingdoms in Indonesia that evemtually gainig followers within the elites of these Kingdoms.
Beside that there was also conquest by Islamic Kingdoms after the fall of Buddhist and Hindu's Kingdoms.
We Indonesian never have thought that it was European powers that forces the their religion and cash crop cultivation that makes Indonesian people became moslem because it was better choices than becoming Christian...
Thanks for the insight ... I am interested to follow through this hipotesis to my fellow Indonesian.

The part that you said that the Ming dynasty driven all Muslims out is a contradiction here. They only driven the Mongols and the Christians out but allowed the Muslims and the Jews to stay as long as they adopt the Chinese names and culture. Heck, I heard that during the reign of Zhengde Emperor, he had plenty of Central Asian Muslim concubines and eunuchs of Muslim origins.

It’s a ridiculous statement indeed. Other than the solid fact of Cheng Ho as a Chinese Muslim, the first Emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuan Zhang even wrote a 100 character eulogy praising Islam.
The grand mosques of Wen Zhou and Nanjing were too constructed during the Ming Dynasty.
