Fun fact, Herschell Walker retired as the NFLs All Time leader in total yards gained (since surpassed).

I will say, for the amount of capital the Vikings gave up for Walker, they were actually able to bounce back into a perennial playoff team in the 90's under the guidance of Dennis Green. You'd think a trade like that would nuke the franchise for more than two years. And one of those picks that they got from the Cowboys did turn into Jake Reed.

the untold story should be, if they had kept Tom Landry and don't make any trade, Landry was going to draft Aikman and Landry had already drafted Irvin and they had Walker and a lot of the key players were already there, Kevin Gogan, Ken Norton Jr., Kelvin Martin, Mark Tuinei, Nate Newton, Jim Jeffcoat, and others that jimmy let go that were starters on other teams like Lockhart, Jack Del Rio, and Everson Walls, and then Laudry hit on some players from the rest of the 89 draft and the early 90s drafts and you could say they still win a least 1 Superbowl before 1994

I doubt this, because Landry was still running that Flex defense which was an outdated scheme. Jimmy's 4-3 zone defense with undersized D lineman rotated throughout the game put pressure on opposing ofenses forcing turnovers. The flex defense was too vulnerable to the pass on the weak side.

@@jeffreywhitlock4882 Landry actually was going to switch to a 3-4 in 89. He hired a new defensive coordinator (I think it was from Indy's staff, but I am not sure).

As much as I loved Landry he’s not drafting Darren Woodson. Maryland, Kevin Smith, Darrin Smith in 93, Alvin Harper, so many cogs to those teams that Jimmys scouts found that played huge roles in their success. Woodson alone was a major find. His ability to cover slot receivers while leaving Kevin Smith one on one with the top receiver on the team allowed Dallas to be efficient defensively against the pass. And of course Jimmy trading for Haley. Stupid Niners letting him go to Dallas 😂

"Why did the Vikings think Walker was the missing piece?"
    A) He was a 2x All-Pro.
    B) You are aware of something called the USFL, right?
Also Darren Nelson was a well-known player in the mid-late 80s. He was a member of the Vikings' 40th Anniversary team. That also tells me none of you played Tecmo Bowl. You'd know that name if you did.

Walker was, and is such a legendary player in the college ranks that at the time I think the Vikings felt they were so close getting over the hump to the Super Bowl. They were coming back two playoff campaigns, but couldn't break though the top dogs. Walker I think was just seen as a missing component. This was back in the 80's where a workhorse halfback was still highly coveted by many teams around the league. So I'm guessing that is where the rationale to acquire him came from, even if the Cowboys were a lousy squad with such a quality player. That didn't matter to the Vikings.

The worst thing was letting Jimmy Johnson go(even though he didn't want to be there any longer). They easily could've had at the very least one more bowl under their belt.

What I don't hear this guy saying is walker had yrs in the usfl so in rb yrs herchal was long in the tooth already if memory serves he had 3 or 4 yrs in that league...add up all his yards and he was easily a top ten RB of all time at that point

    • @4040visionpod

Darren Nelson was a pretty good running back in the 80s. I think Walker was never used as an every down running back during his career because he was so versatile. He played on special teams for goodness sake. If he would have been a back that got 25 carries a game his stats would have been different but a shorter career.

Funny thing is, after the trade the 49ers were still better than the Cowboys. Trading for Charles Haley was the final piece of the puzzle.

If the trade never happened the Cowboys become like The Lions with Barry Sanders......You literally have 1 good player in your entire offense so he either scores or you lose

Some of research was accurate. There are omissions and errors in your presentation. Then Minnesota General Manager Mike Lynn thought that the Vikings were ONE player away from a Super Bowl... a great running back. Hershel Walker was great at Georgia, for the Generals in the USFL, and had excellent stats for Dallas.
Darren Nelson fumbled late in the NFC Championship Game the season before in D.C. He was just a couple pf yards from the end zone and tying the game for Minnesota.
Thus, the ridiculous trade for Walker, the worst move in NFL History. Lynn did not consider the heavy load and number of carries for Walker in cillege and the pros, the toll it took on his speed, his body, hard shot and tackles that break down a body, and Walker was a between the tackles runner. The Vikings needed an outside threat, a back who cut break OUTSIDE the Tackle/Tight End. They tried to have Walker run it outside. Disaster.
The trade looked acceptable for two games. After that... ADVANTAGE for a DECADE= Cowboys.
Team set back for ten years = Vikings.

@4040visionpod I'm surprised you think Dallas would have won at least one SB. Without the Herschel Walker heist and the Charles Haley trade, I don't think the 'Boys would have gotten past the 49ers. That's just my humble opinion.
Were it not for Dallas, I believe Steve Young & Co. would have three-peated (1992-94).
