Missed the most important part of the whole trade. The fact that there was a caveat that by cutting the players Dallas received they would get a bunch of picks which included 2 more First round picks. They ended up with extra 1st round picks in 90,91,92 on top of extra seconds. They never wanted the players.
Yeah. I remember all that. Jones/Johnson broke all the unwritten "Gentleman's Rules" of trades in the NFL. They did what no other team wanted to do because of these "rules". You just didn't do that. Some reporter called it the "Great Trade Robbery". I wish this video had covered the whole aspect of this.
The way jerry handled his success is the NFL is the exact same reason why we haven't sniffed an nfc championship since then he spit in the face of the architect that gave him those rings
When your a fan for 42 years you say we I ride with the team I die with team so when I say we for you illiterate idiots it means the DALLAS COWBOYS! AND THE FAN BASE THATS BEEN WAITING SINCE THE 90S TO GET BACK TO WHERE THEY BELONG IN A CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Cowboys have been mostly a decent competitive team since winning their SB. Cowboy fans think it’s somehow a birthright to get a SB win every decade. And yet, each team should have a 1:32 chance, one SB win every 32 years. But a lot of successful franchises struggle at getting back to mountain top. 49ers have a longer drought than Cowboys. Chiefs won their 2nd SB after some 48 years after not making a SB appearance. Many teams that have existed during the entire SB era have never won the Lombardi. Browns and Lions have never been to a SB. Lions have only won one playoff game. Talk about a vast wasteland for accomplishments. Lions fans wish they could have an era of relevance like the Cowboys had since 2000
The fallout between Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson is another factor, Jones was self-centered, he hated how much praise Johnson got and he wanted more recognition, Jones also made that snide remark about how 500 other coaches could've took them to the Super Bowl, don't take this the wrong way because I'm an Eagles, we may be heated rivals but I have nothing but respect for you guys and every other team in the league and I simply speak facts, I could only imagine how it feels to mostly dominate year in and year out only to be disappointed in the playoffs, but hey at least y'all 5 rings opposed to the only one we have
you failed to mention the reason Dallas had so many picks is because Minnesota didn't realize that if Johnson cut the player he aquired in the trade, it'd turn into a draft pick
Mike Lynn (Vikes GM) was an idiot. Why exactly he tied a high draft pick to each player is beyond rational thinking. He legit thought that Dallas was so bad that they would love all the players sent from Minnesota. I can imagine Jimmy fighting back a giggle when Lynn agreed to it.
I remember Bum Bright’s ownership. With his stingy hands on the finances, we fell into a pit of losing. So I was thrilled when Jerry bought the team and really thrilled when he hired Jimmy. Of course I had NO IDEA what would happen! 😊
How can you talk about that trade without talking about the players being tied to the draft picks, and to get the picks, the Cowboys had to get rid of the players???? You left out one of the most important parts of this trade, and how Jerry and Jimmy tricked the Vikings. Come on man.
As others mentioned, the most important part of this is Jimmy getting to tie each player to a conditional pick, knowing he was cutting them all. This hadn't been done before, and it's probably why Minnesota even agreed to it and why we won't see a robbery like this again. Another underrated part of the rebuild was Jimmy and his staff all being 1 yr removed from CFB, they had a better grasp on the players coming out in the next 2-3 years via their recruiting trails
Greetings from the UK, I remember this trade it worked great for the Cowboys hopefully the Russell Wilson trade will be the same for the Hawks. So far the signs look good. Go Hawks
Incorrect! Danny White had the Cowboys very competitive in the early 80s. 3 straight NFC championship appearances. You can argue “the catch” was the beginning of the end but that was the first of 3 straight nfc title appearances.
He was just another Tony Romo… Cowboy fan here. Let’s say that both was the product of the pieces around them. Neither is a Staubach.. or Aikman. Tony had Ware & Co, Danny had Doomsday 2… so fast forward to 1986 or 2016😮 when talent has left the building or retired. And both are in their twilight of their career’s. 1-15 & 8-8 are the norm.
You know, i am real sick of the say rinse repeat of this story thag so many get wrong. The reason dallas and the media didn't call this a one sided deal was because of the hidden trade details that gave so much more back to dallas. The players the vikings gave up were meant to help dallas rebuild. Jerry and company pointed out they knew nothing of these players medically and wanted 'insurance' just in case. The vikings gm, very sweet and naively gave full assurances. Giving eqch player a pick value if they were cut. In his mind due to injury. Jerry and company, seeing a loophole, knew that if they cut players just befkre that deadline, they would pocket the picks. And despite 2 of the traded players being starters in the 1st dallas sb of the 4, they were cut. Not due to pay or injury or talent. But purely for picks. Jimmy played the vikings for honest suckers. That is why the value balloned so much. And the vikings gm even went pit of his way to resign the cut players or help them sign elsewhere, feeling terrible for them. Now to the walker side of things. Vikings had a spread pass attack style in the early 90s, and walker is a classic ground and pound. We would not even give him a full back on most plays and kept him closer to the line. And the coaches and players hated him. He got a lot of money to come here. A house and cars and would not even try to change his style. And that is why they put him in on special teams. Which most veterans hate viewing it as disrespectful. And walker did all he could to get cut so he thought he could return to dallas. Vikings played nice guy, and it cost them everything. And jimmy, now shown as taking advantage of that, never had success anywhere else after that dallas time. And jones as well. That is the other side of this deal no one talks about. And it should be
I think this horse has been beaten to death but it’s always nice to be reminded of the big trade. Herschel Walker was my favorite Cowboys player but the trade off was superb.
Waste of time. All you did is tell what happened but you didnt break down how the traded players that were cut converted to draft picks etc. Everyone know that the trade happened but many dont understand how the trades broke down into draft picks. And you never mention it.
listened to several History documentaries *-* as much as a purely kidding notion as this IS . . . perhaps someone has (at some point) contrasted this trade with the highly uneven nature of The Louisiana Purchase
Sorry, but they never once threatened for another championship? Going to 3 NFC Championships after Staubach’s retirement qualifies as 3 treats. Lost 1 by a point, and another when Danny white got knocked out
Hopefully not. He was a great football player, but we are voting for Senator, not Running Back. Walker is ignorant of public policy , violent, paid for abortions, lies constantly, and has a Trump supporting son who says not to vote for him. Maybe he will win, but as a Georgian I made the moral choice: the Reverend Raphael Warnock.

He wasn't the Herschel of U of Georgia and of the USFI but he was one of the best all around players of his era. He could pass protect, run and catch the ball was a kickoff returner and also a gunner on special teams.

From a rabid Cowbiys fan, this was a concise, factual, and very entertaining video.

You forgot to mention they got those picks from cutting those players lol
3 straight nfc title games is NOT challenging for a title? Wtf
Exactly what I thought too.
The Russell Wilson trade very well might rival this one day.
How about the Deshaun Watson trade?
@@edwardgaines6561 OR how about the Bears trading the # 1 overall pick in 2023 to the Panthers?
