Hi Lorraine :) So awesome you'll run a marathon in Tokyo. The official mask rules can be found here: www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/covid-19/mask.html we've been trying to follow what others around us are doing also, so we don't make anyone uncomfortable, but currently it seems that most people are wearing their masks out and about and indoors, except while eating or drinking

My de-facto cheapo strategy when I was living in Tokyo was to head to any of the numerous 'Yayoi Ken' restaurants and order the cheapest 'ichiju sansai', a set meal (which is either grilled miso mackerel or deep fried chicken) with unlimited top ups (it's self service, so don't feel shy) of plain, white rice. I would basically fast till as long as I can till about 3-4 pm (there was once I hit a 6 pm record, but it was the summer and I did nothing but hang out at Tower Records listening to records) and head to Yayoiken and eat 6 bowls of rice or something. It's immensely fulfilling for a mere 590 yen. The meal will last you an entire day. Comes with free cold unlimited green tea, pickles and miso soup too. It gets pretty packed during rush hours, but at other times, you can sit there as long as you wish without anyone bothering you, which basically means you can eat as much rice as you like. Some of these branches (like the one in Ginza, several in Shinjuku) are open 24 hours!!!!! That's insanely awesome!!! : )
One of my fave google translate interactions with someone in japan was in a restaurant where they had run out of pasta and they had google translated their sentence to “the noodles have disappeared”…it ended up being the saying for the rest of the trip with my friends 😂😂😂
It is considered rude behaviour to eat and walk in Japan. I think because it can lead to you bumping into someone and spilling on them. That was the best explanation I heard while I lived there for a year. Happy Travels
Ramen used to be a "rough" meal, like for blue-collared workers kind of image. Those panels between customers were invented to make it easier for ladies to come and enjoy by themselves. Culturally, it is considered shabby, lack of etiquette and an indecent act to eat while walking. Especially in a crowded city like Tokyo, it is possible to bump into another person. It is more acceptable in the countryside. And also, I think that those instruction boards are for preventing tourists from littering. Trash cans are always provided at such places.
This is really helpful context, thanks for sharing this. Had no idea what those labels were invented for And good to know about walking and eating! A side benefit for us has been more appreciation for our food (and not eating so fast 😂) but we can definitely see the cleanliness part, especially compared to where we come from
I'm Japanese but I never knew that Tokyo was that fun. You guys definitely discovered better way to enjoy Tokyo! Well done :) Please visit Japan again!
13:47 really hits home. reminds me of the first time i went to ubud in 2015. went to a random warang and it was just such an incredible/authentic experience. then i heard they were building a starbucks there a few years later so i got worried. went back to ubud in 2018 and the same warang was still there. i was so happy. sorry your coffee shop wasn't there.
While I've had very little experience traveling internationally I am in love with Japan. I've always wanted to experience Japan but have been totally intimidated. Lisa and Josh you have made the whole thing seem doable, everything from booking tickets, finding a place to stay, things to do finding great food, and all on a budget! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your TH-cam videos. You've changed my life!
Some of those places brought back memories of my trip to Japan (Tokyo , Kyoto, Nara and Hokkaido)in 2019. My only regret is not trying all that food you two had ! Definitely need to make another trip there . Looking forward to where you’ll take us next .
Really great video, I've been to Tokyo 8 times to visit my wife's family. I think you guys hit all the best spots - I'm going to show this video to friends who are heading there for the first time. Enjoy your month long trip, autumn is the best time to visit 😁
Really enjoyed the video and how you guys try to do it on a Budget. Because there’s so much to do in Tokyo, it’s a bit overwhelming trying to figure out what to do in such limited time. We wanted to go to team lab planets too and it was so far away from everything else. Glad u included it! Am enjoying the three day series!
4:13 In Japan, "eating while walking" or "walking indoors in shoes" is as vulgar as "burping in front of the other person's face," and is therefore prohibited throughout the country. On streets with many tourists of different cultures and food stalls, "Please do not walk around with food" or "Strictly shoes off" signs are posted in many languages. Enjoy the cultural differences🍙🍙
this is so helpful to know, thank you! we wondered if it was maybe to ensure people don't litter and so people don't eat in front of other restaurants. we're enjoying this new difference because we find that it helps us slow down and actually enjoy the food slowly and not just keep moving ☺️
Which hotel or hostel did you stay in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, you didn't tell and at what price? Dunno whether I missed out on that very important information or you didn't actually tell. Please let us know about it here
I’ve come across first on your hour long Camino video as I’m planning to go this September and I can’t help but smile when again I’ve stumbled upon in your channel while just binge watching everything about Japan. I love Japan and seeing you two in this video made me love Japan even more. There’s something about you two that really make such a breath of fresh air and a beautiful sight combined. Keep your inspiring videos coming. ♥️
This vlog was amazinggg! Was supposed to have a trip there in 2020 but was cancelled so living vicariously through your video 😂 hoping to visit soon. Great job on this and looking forward to more!
Ahh we completely understand that feeling, canceling and rebooking, crossing fingers and cancelling again :) hope you get to visit soon!! Thanks for watching
As we started watching this video we felt your voices were familiar- we had watched your videos about the Camino last spring as we prepared for our summer 2022 adventures. Alas, here we are again watching your videos to prep for our summer 2023 adventures! Just wanted to say thank you- we find your videos super helpful, engaging, and entertaining!
I'm going there in November this year but already I'm watching all these videos from lovely travellers like you guys for new information. Thank you for the nice work and for keeping my enthusiasm alive for the next ten months!
Was there this past November and I’m still learning about things to do.. like is this the same Tokyo I visited ? Making notes for my JAPAN 2 trip. Well done you guys. 😊
I'm glad that I came across your videos as I'm preparing my trip to Japan next week. I don't like going all touristy when traveling and I always try to avoid the crowd so I really loved your Kyoto video. Also, I love Lisa!! She's so pretty!!
This brings me back to when I met you there in 2013. Wish you wouldve had the channel back then. Ill never forget our karoake session. Miss you buddy! Thanks for the good times
Great Video! My wife said that the eating and walking is not forbidden in Japan normally. I never heard of it either. Japanese don´t do it by themselves. NEVER.BUT she said, maybe too many foreigners threw their garbage aways or crushed into other people with the food... So they started forbidden it...
super helpful context, thank you! we figured this was a rule in popular tourist spots especially with lots of food stalls nearby. we don't dare walk and eat at the same time now, but we do find that it makes us appreciate our food more! :) :)
@@LisaAndJosh You're welcome!! As a foreigner it helps to know the unwritten rules i guess. So, even if it is not written somewhere, do not do it. And yes, for us viewers it is nice too :-) Looking forward to your next videos! Great work!! Greetings from Germany
Just finished watching your Kyoto and Osaka video and went back to this one. I just realized I was in Shinjuku on Halloween day 2022 as well.! Spent so much time watching the 3D television of the cat and spaceship.
This lays out a fantastic itinerary. Super helpful. Have watched several times and dissected a lot of this for inclusion in our Tokyo plans. We’re two hours away from landing in NRT and can’t wait to get into it! Thanks for putting this together.
I just had to reminisce when you mentioned konbini karaage chicken. My son, back when he was a minor, would spend his allowance to by the nuggets DAILY. Thank you for sharing your journey…lovely couple
Oh, my gosh!! What a wonderful showcase of your time in Japan! As a foodie, I was in glorious heaven throughout your time there...loved the food, sights, sounds...ALL of it! You guys knocked it out of the park with this one! Thanks so much! 🙂
Loved the budget aspect because it's true that we don't all have limitless budgets or comp'd flights like the TH-camrs taking first-class flights. And even that moment of the "seating fee" will save so many people the pain of being scammed. You took the hit for the team :-) Happy travels and thank you for your channel!
The music outside you heard in the morning is called “Radio Taiso” which is the music you exercise along with. If you went to Japanese school, you know what that is.
Thanks guys love you videos I'm taking my 13 year old daughter to japan next April/may after watching your blog I think I'm going to put on 30kgs while there food looks amazing thanks for all your ideas and experiences.
Just came back from a week in Tokyo and I want to turn around & go back tomorrow! I did go solo and unlike you two I'd never been. So I got crazy lost a few times and didn't find the restaurants you show here but all the food everywhere was SOoo good! Omg. The trains you did make seem easy were pretty confusing to me, but one can learn. Yes, Google maps satellite view made getting around easier. It's such an amazing country! Your videos are helpful.
Doh did like such an adventurous trip! Our first trips, respectively, were also solo trips and we can definitely relate. Seeing those station maps without google maps back then 🙃🙃🙃
Welcome to Japan! I approve of the budget eats and your Tokyo itinerary! Don't feel bad about the difficulty in finding the exact food you want - it's everywhere, but sometimes you gotta accept delicious curry instead (although I often hit the Indian/Nepali version instead).
Walking and eating is considered rude. I’ve also heard that some people consider it poor time management, since you can’t stop and eat. You also shouldn’t eat in front of other shops and inconvenience those shops.
ah yes, we wondered if this was one of the reasons! poor time management--totally get that now--we are *always* rushing and we're glad to slow down now when we eat! :)
I'm surprised it's not knowlege people load up on before visiting another country. Just saying. If I'm visiting somewhere I'm not sure of, I would want to make sure I'm not being rude to others or getting arrested for something I think is ok
@@LisaAndJosh In spring they have an azalea festival there. I haven't been yet but hopefully in 2023 and hopefully you guys can also see it some day ☺️
Eating while walking can also cause a lot of litter dropping. You are usually always considered to consume food & drinks directly at the place of purchase - thats why it can also be very hard to find trash cans. Also people don't pay attention where they walk. The rest (rude, time management etc.) was already mentioned.
23:35 is exactly how i feel planning my trip.... worried i'm gonna miss something in tokyo because there's SO MUCH and, unlike y'all, iunno if i'll ever go back a second time. it's made planning this trip a lil overwhelming tbh.
26:55 50$ for both and hostel, I remember I stay at the same times as you I paid for apartment about 30$ per person a night (3ppl) I don't recommend hostel in terms of price if you are in a group of 2 or more.
Absolutely love what I just watched. I’m going to watch it over and over again. Thank you so much for sharing so much of what you enjoy. If you ever come to the DC area let me know I would love to help you get around. You guys are fabulous.
I will be doing 3 days in Taipei later this year and 5 days in Tokyo in January of next year. Your vlogs help a ton! Any vlogs for Malaysia? Going there in March
I would love to meet you guys in a place like Tokyo so you could be tour guides and hang out! Not gonna lie, going somewhere like that feels a little overwhelming/intimidating to me (kinda like your nighttime bar experience), but I know it would be so awesome!!
ohhh that'd be so fun! :) we totally get that--it's the initial uncertainty/unknown that get us the most. but then, as soon as we arrive, get to exploring, and start to figure one or two things out--it all becomes so much fun!
Arigato for your great video and welcome to Japan ❤️ Although I am Japanese and have been to most of places in this video, I really enjoyed 😭 I am so jealous of your editing skill…!!!!
a awesome video! you two have great Carisma.... ,I'm taking my daughter to Tokyo in March . her 1st time , my 5th. always looking to learn more. thanks
I came across your channel and watched the Osaka/Kyoto on a budget video. I immediately followed while watching! Love the concept of your channel, being real, and showing so much appreciation for what you end up experiencing. You both give me Chip and Joanna Gaines vibes! Haha. What is the name of the outdoor garden around 29 mins?
Love the videos and your personality/style, makes it easy to watch. Not sure if I'm missing something, are the places in the video actually mentioned? I saw other people mention things like "you hit all the spots" type of comments, but never really saw specifics; the description on the vid doesn't say anything except gear, how to connect and support. (The sights are largely obvious, more interested in the food spots)
thanks for the message! we just started making a map to all the places we went in our videos and are just getting to this one now :) here ya go! hope that helps! (it's also now in the video description too) www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=13xDdvtZ6JwvqhgHC3ieyve8igvQfjiM&usp=sharing
Lisa / Josh ~ You guys NAILED IT. Very helpful indeed. I am planning in June this tear, where did you guys stay in Tokyo? let me know when you can. thanks - VK
Glad it was helpful!! We stayed in Asakusa at a hostel called Sakura Hostel. We love the entire neighborhood of Asakusa, although a bit further away from the center, it’s so beautiful and well connected. Enjoy your trip!
I just discovered your channel and love it. My dream is to go to Japan one day. I have been working for Toyota for almost 17 years, so I am a bit familiar with culture. The both of you are great and your videos are well done. Your friend in San Antonio. By the way, you earned a new sub!
Omg! The second I started watching your video I’ve realised you stayed at the very same hostel in Tokyo as I did back in 2016. Currently planning my 3 week trip in August this year and wondering whether or not to stay at the hostel again. :)
Oh my gosh this was amazing!! Although I didn’t get the name of the cool place with the weird bean bag. I’m going to Tokyo in May for a week and I’d love to do some of this stuff!
@@LisaAndJosh thank you! In your opinion, What area in Tokyo is best to stay in? Shinjuku? I want to be able to access the subway and trains easily! definitely saving this vlog and its itinerary for my wish birthday trip hopefully in Jan!
Seeing those station maps without google maps back then 🙃🙃🙃
@@LisaAndJosh I had a hard time getting out of Tokyo station !! Lol
僕は英語は分かりませんが楽しかったです。地方に住んでいるので東京を観光した気分になりました。また日本に遊びに来てください。
どうもありがとうございます
I'm going to Tokyo soon, so thank you for this video and your google maps link! 😀
Love you guys. I'm going to Japan in November so watching a lot of vids. You guys are the only couple I can watch🤣🤣
Welcome to Japan! I approve of the budget eats and your Tokyo itinerary! Don't feel bad about the difficulty in finding the exact food you want - it's everywhere, but sometimes you gotta accept delicious curry instead (although I often hit the Indian/Nepali version instead).
ah, yes, thank you!! delicious curry is always delicious
Walking and eating is considered rude. I’ve also heard that some people consider it poor time management, since you can’t stop and eat. You also shouldn’t eat in front of other shops and inconvenience those shops.
Also, so jealous you went on the Imperial Palace tour! I just walked around the garden area.
ah yes, we wondered if this was one of the reasons! poor time management--totally get that now--we are *always* rushing and we're glad to slow down now when we eat! :)
That’s is facts
I think that is the reason why Japanese people eat so fast in restaurants
I'm surprised it's not knowlege people load up on before visiting another country. Just saying. If I'm visiting somewhere I'm not sure of, I would want to make sure I'm not being rude to others or getting arrested for something I think is ok
Wow, thanks soo much for this fun video! Heading there in a few months and you gave me soo many ideas for our trip!
Awesome’ have a great time!!
I'm so glad you guys got to check out Nezu Shrine. It's my favorite place in Tokyo.
it's such a sweet spot in Tokyo--we had never been until this last trip and so happy it exists
@@LisaAndJosh In spring they have an azalea festival there. I haven't been yet but hopefully in 2023 and hopefully you guys can also see it some day ☺️
Thanks for the post. Amazing video. So much fun. I can't wait to be back this year.
Loved your vlog! Going to Japan in sep ! Can’t wait. Thanks for the inspo and recommendations of things to do and eat ! ❤
Thanks, Gang. Good Job.👍
Like your style, I've been to Japan a number of times (~6).
I'm Subscribed.
Love from Texas.❤
Awesome! Thank you!
Eating while walking can also cause a lot of litter dropping. You are usually always considered to consume food & drinks directly at the place of purchase - thats why it can also be very hard to find trash cans. Also people don't pay attention where they walk. The rest (rude, time management etc.) was already mentioned.
What a fun time you guys had. We are going to Tokyo in June 2023. Looking forward to a great trip
have a great time!! :)
Thank you so much for this video! I am leaving for Tokyo in a week and was feeling really under prepared for my trip.
Have a great time!! :)
Thank you for talking me places in Tokyo virtually, and I really enjoyed watching your video!!!
thank you so much for watching and coming along!
Thank you for sharing! We took some notes for our upcoming trip! 🙌🏻🙏🏻
Hope you enjoy it!
23:35 is exactly how i feel planning my trip.... worried i'm gonna miss something in tokyo because there's SO MUCH and, unlike y'all, iunno if i'll ever go back a second time. it's made planning this trip a lil overwhelming tbh.
Totally get this feeling! It’s hard to be present and have constant fomo, but it’s going to be an awesome trip, no matter what :)
26:55 50$ for both and hostel, I remember I stay at the same times as you I paid for apartment about 30$ per person a night (3ppl)
I don't recommend hostel in terms of price if you are in a group of 2 or more.
Absolutely love what I just watched. I’m going to watch it over and over again. Thank you so much for sharing so much of what you enjoy. If you ever come to the DC area let me know I would love to help you get around. You guys are fabulous.
Thanks for the kind words, Diane!! Really appreciate that and that sounds amazing :) we haven’t been to DC since we were kids, that sounds fun
Wow been to Japan a dozen times and never knew they do tours at the Imperial Palace that's amazing access.
We were surprised too! Not sure how long they’ve been doing them, but we didn’t know either until we just saw a line forming that morning
@@LisaAndJosh we did the same tour in oct 2019 ...... pretty sweet as we just stumbled across it as well
loving the videos, Lisa and Patrick Wilson!
I love it when travel vloggers collab!
I will be doing 3 days in Taipei later this year and 5 days in Tokyo in January of next year. Your vlogs help a ton! Any vlogs for Malaysia? Going there in March
we have a few from our time in Malaysia in 2021--we visited Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi :) th-cam.com/play/PL2wef12rf3A_w9qLMuqi5k_pkokAEkQa8.html
Thanks for sharing your experiences in such detail!
You guys are so chill with your vids that I had to subscribe. 👍🏻
Thanks for finding us and subscribing:)
First time watching your vlog. It’s after work, having a little whiskey and came across this. Love the whole vibe. 👍
Thanks for finding us and watching :)
Super motivated to take my hubby with me to Japan next year😍😍
Arigato for your great video and welcome to Japan ❤️ Although I am Japanese and have been to most of places in this video, I really enjoyed 😭 I am so jealous of your editing skill…!!!!
thank you for the kind words and warm welcome! :)
a awesome video! you two have great Carisma.... ,I'm taking my daughter to Tokyo in March . her 1st time , my 5th. always looking to learn more. thanks
Hey, thanks!!! Have a great time, that’ll be such an awesome trip
Think I'm gonna just follow your itinerary for my first trip! Great vid!
Just found your channel and fell in love. Such an amazing insight into Japan that no one else ive seen does
Oh wow ! Halloween 🎃? And the trees 🌳 & grass were green !!? Woah ! 😲
I love this. I can’t wait to return this winter. ❤
have a great time!!
Hi there! You guys are very sympathic! 😁 thanks for the video. Love Japan and hope to go back soon! Cheers from🇨🇭 ✌️😎
Love this video! Very detailed and looks like you guys had a great time!
What month did you guys go?
Omg your the best! Your Singapore video was so helpful and great and now I'm going to Japan you have done a video on too. Thanks so much 😁👍
so glad to hear!! :) have a great time!!! Japan is such an awesome place to visit
I love your content! I've stayed in Asakusa and loved it!
(it's also now in the video description too)

Awesome video! I really appreciate your practical approach to travel! Your content is always so interesting. I love it here!! Lol
Thanks, Brandi!! Tokyo is awesome!!
Appreciate the long video and action packed too. ❤❤ it.
so glad you enjoyed it! thank you for watching :)
By the way, you earned a new sub!
so awesome, thank you for finding us and joining us! can't wait for you to visit Japan someday in person :)
hoping since I work nightshift and have a terrible sleep schedule will help me with the jet lag!! Super authentic video, love your guys vibe! (:
Omg! The second I started watching your video I’ve realised you stayed at the very same hostel in Tokyo as I did back in 2016. Currently planning my 3 week trip in August this year and wondering whether or not to stay at the hostel again. :)
i LOVE that hostel - i've stayed there probably 10 times over the years
Oh my gosh this was amazing!! Although I didn’t get the name of the cool place with the weird bean bag. I’m going to Tokyo in May for a week and I’d love to do some of this stuff!
It’s team lab planets in Tokyo! We loved the experience!! Have a great time :)
@@LisaAndJosh thank you! In your opinion, What area in Tokyo is best to stay in? Shinjuku? I want to be able to access the subway and trains easily! We’re taking the bullet train to Kyoto for a day/overnight. Thanks so much! I can also check out your other videos ☺️ I enjoyed watching this one. It was super helpful
Cool video and Channel🔥I was with you in the death metal bar! Hope you have a lot more fun in Japan and I will definitely watch some of your next video’s in Japan

Thank you very much.
I am very happy to be Japanese.
Have a good year!
thank you for watching!! ❤️ Japan is so wonderful!
So fun to watch the meet up. I was watching Tia and Chevio (sp?) when they posted from Day 1
HiYa, I really enjoyed your tour and the places you went to. You both have good chemistry together and you look like you really enjoy what you're doing. Ironically, my daughter and her husband are in Tokyo right now and they do vlogs also hers is Sam Fournier, I told my daughter to watch your vlog for ideas on where to go you went to some really cool places. Thanks for sharing 👍.
Thank you so much! How fun! Hope they are enjoying Tokyo :)
You enjoyed very much !
東京は、楽しかったかな😃
Tokyo is one of our favorite cities in the entire world--we had a wonderful time :)
It will be a new discovery of Japanese tourist attractions! I also send information about visiting Japan, so that will be very helpful!
