Fish Hydrolysate - Fermented Fish Fertilizer

  • This batch is based on 2 large wild king salmon I caught. The fillets went into the smoker, freezer, and our bellies. The fish carcasses went into a bucket with molasses and water and allowed to ferment with naturally incurring lacto bacteria. It will stink for 1-3 weeks but then become a wonderful fertilizer for your soil and plants.

    A buddy started giving me walleye carcasses and I just kept dumping them in a 55 gal. steel barrel with water. I did add some urine at one point. It sat for a year before I ventured to use it. Believe me..... it still smelled pretty rank. Wear rubber gloves and don't spill even a drop on your clothes. I didn't dilute it nearly enough cause I managed to burn 30 tomato plants and several pepper plants on first application. Fortunately I had plenty of extra plants to replace them with. So lesson learned..... dilute, dilute, dilute.

    You can dissolve fishbones with vinegar. 1:10 . And that solution can be added 1:1000 . Great P fertilizer. same goes for eggshells (Ca) or carbonized/burnt animal bones. (P)

    The recipe I watched and are going to try, uses leaf mould and not molasses. He also used a water seal so that the gas can escape but the air can't get in. This process took 3 - 6 months (preferably a year!).

    You could drill a small hole in the side of the bucket at high level and tape a much smaller piece of mesh over it to take care of off gassing.
    That leaves the lid in one piece to keep out rain and critters.

      Good idea. I use it too fast, plus I fish enough I often make new batches. I'd also be nervous that freezing might kill off some of the beneficial microorganisms that helped break down the carcass.

    This will beat just burying the frames. I get mixed results the old way, sometimes it attracts root rot sometimes not... but I think this way will avoid that

    • @OutdoorScienceDad
      @OutdoorScienceDad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Another advantage doing it this way over just burying a fish carcass is that this goes a really long way because you can dilute it. Burying a fish carcass just puts those nutrients in that one localized area. Give it a shot, I think you’ll enjoy it!

    • @OutdoorScienceDad
      @OutdoorScienceDad  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      El uso de pescado para producir fertilizante le brinda a su jardín todos los nutrientes y minerales principales que su suelo necesita para estar muy saludable y sustentar la vida de las plantas. Un pez, como la mayoría de los seres vivos, está formado por muchas cosas diferentes, sangre, huesos, grasa y más. Todo eso construye un suelo saludable y alimenta a los microorganismos que sustentan las plantas.

      @@OutdoorScienceDad If you have the time and patience, everything will be totally dissolved after 1 year. I checked mine at 6 months... and still had all the rib, back and pin bones and gill plates left. 6 months later? All liquid. A piece of advise if I may: use a good blender to blend the fish liquid and bones together. Comes out a lot smoother and doesn't clog the watering can as much. Cheers!
