For David to be able to be T posing, then snap into character immediately is so impressive to me
Thats CGI David LOL
@@Unreality_3D eh? At :57 seconds? That's not CGI lol, it's the on set camera monitor.
I mean, he's an actor, soooo
â@Unreality_3D no see I think you're confused the background is cgi hence the green screen David is not
Almost like he's an actor or something... ð
Such a strange turn of events to witness David Tennant become The Doctor twice, and be involved in 5 regenerations in my lifetime (both ends of the regeneration, 9-10, 10-10, 10-11, 13-14 & 14-15) it's bloody wild
Edit: some people are confused about the 10-10 call, that's cause (in Time of the Doctor) it's officially recognised that even though he was still called the 10th Doctor, the Stolen Earth/Journeys End regeneration used up a full regeneration, even if it was just to heal him from his death to the Dalek. If you want to discount that regeneration by all means do, but it was still a regeneration scene, hence why I included it (as that literally is the point of this comment)
literally thinking the same lol
He's probably so tired of being stood with his arms stuck out now
What happened to Peter Capaldi's Doctor ððð. 12-13
â@@coverdave1259tenant wasn't there
Twice? He became the Doctor thrice.
I loved Jodie's regeneration, and the transition into David was seamless. You'd never have guessed that they were filmed months apart with a completely different crew.
Props to the vfx team, motion control cameras are fantastic for this sort of shot
I concur. Kudos to both crews for a beautiful and seamless scene.
@ I know, these are notoriously insane to film. Like, regeneration is such a complicated visual effect to film in general, so that of all things is NOT something you want to be filming with a tiny unmanned skeleton crew/two separate crews working apart from each other. And yet due to the secrecy involved (well, in the revival years of production), it always is and is therefore an even more massive undertaking. So props to them for nailing it in such circumstances.
I like that they could onion-skin it to really dial in the pose similarity
@@vincentjohnflorio there's a video of Tennant reacting to the behind the scenes footage of Baker regenerating into Davison, they used onion-skinning there as well.
David definitely will always hold the record for most regenerations on Doctor Who
AND additionally stopped another regeneration sequence thanks to his floaty hand.
â@@justfellicityaWrong, that counted as a Regeneration
@@funnyfunnyvalentine7991 Nope, that was a metacrisis Doctor formed by 10s aborted regeneration and his/Donna's DNA. Not an actual regeneration. He used up regeneration energy, but it wasn't a true regeneration.
â@@justfellicityano, the metacrisis was the combination of Donna and the doctors regeneration energy.
They even stated it in the show that him pumping his regeneration energy into his hand counted as a regeneration, and that is exactly why Matt Smith was the last regeneration of the 12 regenerations. As if David Tennants hand regen was not included then he wouldn't have been the 13th doctor.
@@mastere6115 The metacrisis used regeneration energy but was NOT an actual regeneration. See: Doctor Who Wiki.
I absolutely adored the regeneration response. Having 14's response be, "What? ... What!?!" was so delightfully believable while still being hilariously meta.
I thought he was going to say Barcelonaððð
Rachel Talalay is the director equivalent to RTD ð So happy she's back, even if it's just for a few eps
It's fun how she used to work on all the nightmare on elm Street movies to becoming one of the main directors of doctor who
@@mullaosloI think at this point Tank Girlâs failure led her to greater paths. How many other directors can say theyâve directed in two of the biggest sci-fi franchises of all of Television?
Don't need to compare her to RTD to say she's amazing.
Sheâs only directing the first special
But Iâm surprised she directed Davidâs part of the regeneration

- The Curator (Tom Baker).
Every time Russell tries to convince us this is not a trick, we double down on it being a trick haha. I'm so excited for these specials!
...and now I think it's a trick involving The Trickster!
I love how he mentions the Trickster and says: "He's not responsible for this" and I'm like: "No, of course not, it's the Toymaker."
@@MagicMartin666 While I don't think this has anything to do with The Trickster, him mentioning The Trickster does make me think he might show up for the 15th Doctor
Because that's exactly what Russell would say no matter if the Toymaker was involved or not ð
@@bast713 Exactly.
Aw, I love the fact David was messaging Jodie through his breaks. I loved her Doctor, 13 was funny and relatable to me, but I'm overly excited to see David back as 14
Same, that's really lovely!
â@SteveyTheEx-EeveeWhat makes Jodie Whittaker a psychopath? Are we and Scotland Yard missing something?
@@bojurie The incarnation of the doctor she played, the script, the writing, not her as a person or her acting, but what she was given and what she had to work with.
@SteveyTheEx-Eevee Bet you a million quid you would not say that to Jodie or Chibnal's face. Hide behind a keyboard, what a hero.
@SteveyTheEx-Eevee did anyone ask? no?
David is so sweet for messaging Jodie when they were filming the regeneration (because its her regeneration too). And it's cool to see that David was the one that decided he wanted to do the same comment about his teeth as when he regenerated from Christopher Eccleston. And yes RTD and David's plan to surprise people with that fact he was the new Doctor instead of Ncuti worked.
Love that were starting to get more behind the scenes stuff now, just like the good old days.
They had some sort of full lenght special for Jodie's final episode, so technically 'the good old days' started there.
â@@timrob12good riddance for that
Yes! Reminds me of the old "Doctor Who Confidential"s from the RTD days. Now if we can just get Christmas episodes back, it will be just like the old(ish/newwho) days. âš
@@justfellicitya To be fair, I missed that for 12 and 13's runs.
Jodie's regeneration is probably the most beautiful one we've ever seen.
So true, it's really positive compared to so many others.
Modern technology for ya
Visual effect in her era where definitely great.
@@Kritigri And it suits her. When 12th regenerated, all he wished for the next Doctor was hope, laugh and smile.
It looked beautiful, but I only cared about seeing Ncuti Gatwa (turned out to be David)
It's actually really cool to see the other side of a regeneration scene filmed, even though it's like less than a minute on screen.
David Tennant coming back means so much to me, it made me feel like a kid again, thank you Doctor Who!!
Oh hello new teeth thatâs weird weâre was I? Oh yeah thatâs right Barcelona.
I remember that like it was yesterday
1:38 I like how RTD mentions the Trickster. I love the villain sm. I also like how he is doing an in universe explanation for the clothes change
The man knows his lore.
i mean... he created the trickster so it would be weird if he didn't know him@@stuff31
wouldn't surprise me if the trickster showed up at some point during 15's run since rtd seems to really like using that character and theres stuff he never got to do with him because of Sladen's death.
@@stuff31To be fair he should do, he literally invented the Trickster lol
@@kingp260 was that him or was that a Gareth Roberts thing?
This feels like a scene from DW confidential, and it's making me super excited for Unleashed!
It's always so fun and inspiring to see the show get made, and I very much appreciate the fact that it wasn't just a simple BTS clip of the green-screen footage which they released as an afterthought, but instead clearly planned in advance to include some interviews as well.
Huge respect and thanks to whoever is behind the creation of these clips
This is basically an Unleashed thing, RTD mentioned that we would see a little of it before The Star Beast aired. This must be it.
@peterchu5609 Oh that makes sense! Still, looks great if it is (:
It is so great to finally see behind the scenes footage of this regen scene, and Tennant messaging Jodie while doing it to make her feel a part of it at the same time is so sweet, and David was right on the ball with how fans would react as well, they definitely got what they were aiming for, even though everyone kind of knew because it was a huge theory going around that just wouldn't subside, but fans still either screamed with joy or were speechless due to David being there instead of Ncuti which is just amazing, and the fact that RTD has confirmed he is not a fake Doctor or trick of some kind by the Toymaker but an actual incarnation is very interesting as well as exciting, and I can't wait to find out what the "subtle" reason 14 looks like 10 is in the specials, I reckon it could be something to do with the Time Lord Victorious but that's just me!
As an American, I find Rachel Talalay to be an inspiration. The idea that even someone not born in the UK could still be a part of this amazing show, and I hope (probably in vain) that I might make a contribution one day as well.
Good for you! I hope one day you do too
Good luck to you!
Indeed, good luck. Rachel Talalay is an excellent director, she has directed some of my favourite Doctor Who episodes, not least "Heaven Sent" - Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat and Rachel Talalay coming together to make one of most critically aclaimed episodes in the show's history.
As an American, my dream job is to be a Doctor Who showrunner and writer.

David Tennant is back. The 60th anniversary is going to be legendary
I love the scene where the Doctor regenerated. Not just because of how beautifully it's filmed, or because of the twist. In this scene I appreciate that she was 13. The Doctor smart enough to climb out of the TARDIS so that she doesn't destroy her during her regeneration like the other Doctors did
9âs and 11âs regeneration didnât do anything to the tardis.
10âs and 12âs were plot contrivances to give an excuse change the appearance.
For 11 one of the changes they just did it between seasons and rolled with it.
The 60th really feels like the best of every era, the writing of Tennants era, the phenomenal Rachel Talalay from Capaldis era and thats just a little bit of what is coming up. Im so hyped
NOVEMBER CANNOT COME SOON ENOUGH
What a feat it must've been to be at a different studio on a different day with a different crew and having to match the lighting, blocking etc. but with a different actor. That's a break from most regenerations, where there's a bit where the old Doctor leaves, the new one comes in and they do it on the day. (David's had a part in one of the few exceptions, when he was cast much later after principal photography on The Parting of the Ways.)
I think David to Matt was the only time so far in the revival they did both sides on the same day.
Good to have you back David Tennant
The fact that he was texting Jodie so that she was included in both halves of her regeneration is so wholesome!
Love all the effort they put into matching up these shots, behind-the-scenes stuff like this really helps you appreciate the effort that goes into shows like this. Great that we're getting DWUnleashed to continue on from DWConfidential! So excited for when it comes back. :)
I remember the Confidential episode of Utopia and seeing how Simm's first part of his changeover from Sir Derek Jacobi was him constantly moving around on the set to match Jacobi's position.
I know the topics about David, but goodness...I shed literal tears knowing that they were going to possibly be resolving things w/ Ten and Donna. Rose hurt me for awhile...Martha put into view of the importance of yourself and your loved ones...Donna though, was just a normal and somewhat self-centered individual, full of determination. I remember initially not liking her because she was this super-snappy person, but by the time that episode ended, I loved just how well they meshed together. She healed him and brought him back to reality, which is what I adored about their friendship. She was a real "Ride or Die" individual who ended up discovering the true value of her existence, only for fate to f-k her over like that, man. It might as well have been her re/degenerating for me and seeing Ten suffer like that, having to lock her away like that, was absolutely painful...When I saw the trailer though, I had a good little scream. I don't expect the same atmosphere from prior, but I'm going in hopeful that she can remember(-without repercussions) just how important she was to 10 and the universe.
Ooo been waiting to see the behind the scenes of this! ððĨ
Can't believe that was a year ago. I'm so hyped for the anniversaryðððĨðĨ
The whole team is SO talented! The actors, the director, the camera staff, all of them ^^ Bloody genius!
To David Tennant and the rest of the Doctor Who crew: Thank you for this behind-the-scenes look. And an incredibly galaxy-sized "Thank you!" to David Tennant in his willingness to return to Doctor Who.
When David filmed his regeneration, there were a couple of photos of Matt and David together on the Tardis set which I always liked seeing as a "passing of the torch" moment, similar to the photo of Sylvester McCoy handing over the Tardis key to Paul McGann for the 1996 TV movie. In this case, since Jodie and David filmed on separate days, they missed the opportunity to see them together on set for any "passing the torch" photos. It's a trivial thought, I know, but at least a considerate one too.
History repeats, since David filmed his first regeneration long after Chris had left. Hopefully he gets the chance to do a proper passing of the torch with Ncuti.
Of course, if multiple Doctors do show up in the specials, then hopefully they can all be there on the same day.
I think that time was the only instance in the revival of shooting both ends of the regeneration together.
i think the reason was because they didn't want the surprise regeneration given away. hence why we have a different director and crew here for tennant's arrival. i expect even the crew with jodie didn't know she was going to regenerate into tennant
@@jhibbitt1 Even Chibnall didn't know that.
@@andyh4518 Even the Edge scene wasn't filmed with all the Doctors. Jodie only met David Bradley, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy (McCoy having shot his 'hologram' bit in the morning on the same day) while Peter Davison and Paul McGann short their bits seperately.
So cool to see David back can only imagine what it must be like for him!
Rachel is such a phenomenal director and Iâm so excited sheâs back for this!
Jodieâs regeneration was one of my favourites of all time. Not because itâs into Tennant, though Iâm not complaining about that, but because her final words suit her so well and the actual effects for it are amazing. A Regeneration has never looked so beautiful.
Watching the regenerations live and even knowing info beforehand do to news and or leaks, is still so exhilarating!
This for Doctor Who is as momentous as Hayden Christensen and Mark Hamill returning to Star Wars as Anakin and Luke over the past few years, great to see David back.
This put a huge grin on my face âĪïļðĨ
The excitement of David as a fan, Rachel talking through Regeneration & Russell talking about the 14th Doctor not being a fake. The excitement is tangible ððŽ #DoctorWho
What a fantastic moment it was, and great to see all the love that went into it, David Tennant is absolutely right in talking about the magic of these moments. Hereâs to the future.
Great to see David's genuine enthusiasm and excitement at being involved in this whole bonkers process (again). This why he's such a great Doctor, and a great ambassador for the franchise. Put him in a long coat in front of that blue box and he's a fizzy fanboy again, still struggling to process the reality of playing his childhood hero.
Just IMAGINE how cool it wouldâve been if nobody knew going into this that David Tennant would show up. Such a missed opportunity from the marketing team.
As far as I remember, it WAS known that Tennant would return, but NOT, that he would in fact be the 14th doctor.
So, it WAS a surprise!
@@ClockMaster-mq2hm Agreed. There was still an element of doubt, even knowing David was doing the 60th we couldn't be entirely sure if it would be David or Ncuti right up until that final moment. That was the clever part David talks about in the clip, by announcing Ncuti, no-one could be certain who would turn up next! There was still a heck of a surprise in there that we don't normally get. And if you see some of the original fan reactions, it seems lots of people didn't get the DT memo! They were falling off their sofas in shock! ðð
@@hotdog1214 I remember the day when the episode came out. I'm german, and it takes a while for new Doctor Who episodes to arrive on Amazon in our country.
Luckily, shortly after the episode aired originally, I watched the official video of the regeneration - I knew, that thumbnails of future youtube videos talking about the special would spoil me, so I decided to at least authentically witness the regeneration itself.
My body was shivering out of surprise!
(and because my wish was granted: finally a regeneration with competent CGI ... 12ths clearly showed that they gave Capaldi all the time to do his last speech - at enough time for proper special effects being the price, I assume ...

Kinda adorable how David was texting Jodie during the whole filming.
Also Russel casually namedropping the Trickster.

1:01 Oh yeah, they know
Oh my gosh absolutely fantastic. Love the transition to David Tennant's Doctor.
David's chuckle at the end ^^ I felt that one.
Even though I knew he would be back for the specials I was still shocked at the generation when it happened. At the time I thought the specials would bring 10 back, that they might be multiple Doctor stories or other shenanigans [great word!] so this really surprised me and 14's "what"'s definitely echoed my own :D
I also tried to keep away from social media, fan theories etc. as soon as David's comeback was made public because I really didn't want to know more. That was a good strategy and I keep doing it though The Official Doctor Who TH-cam Channel makes it really difficult XD [I mean, they seem to prepare us with those reference videos and so on. It's maddening guys! But I also love it ;)]

Doctor who confidential is back???
Kind of, there'll be a new Behind the Scenes show called Doctor Who: Unleashed which will be similar!
I'd heard the rumours, but I still gasped when it was David
My theory is the reason the Doctor changed back into David Tennant is because of a side effect from Yaz and Vinder reversing the forced regeneration done to the Doctor by the Master in the previous episode. So we might see the Doctor change back into some of his old faces like Smith or Capaldi or Eccleston in the upcoming specials.
Either that or Donna is still somehow connected to the Doctor because of the Meta-Crisis thing and her remembering the Doctor caused him to change back into the Tenth Doctor (14th Doctor with the face of 10).
With all the reverse-regeneration shenanigans in the power of the doctor that's pretty clearly it, they might have overshot a little bit when trying to revert the regeneration
i assumed it was a trick by the celestial toymaker as he made the Dr invisible and incorporeal the first time too and hartnell's regeneration was originally going to be a trick by the toymaker, but he ended up renewing his contract for a bit longer. however RTD seems to be debunking that here, unless he's trying to lead us off the path
