  • (Edit: GEEZ, okay, you like these ones!) There's bound to be a great many new Ultramarine Captains in the next couple of weeks - it seems to happen every year! READ MORE:
    Starting your own army of miniatures can be daunting, and it seems there's hundreds of different ways of painting them. Ultimately, this is true! But part of the fun of tackling your own painting projects is in finding a style that works for you and gets models on the table in a way that you find appealing. Here's one of mine where it comes to getting Ultramarines on the table in no time at all and with a minimum of fuss and paints - you could base your own differently, of course!
    How I Paint Things is a series of simple instructional videos designed to help the newcomer through some of the basics and demonstrate how the very simplest techniques can still give you some great results that're easily replicated. Aimed at the beginner to painting miniatures, there might be one or two tips or tricks that help even you old hands!

    I have seen a lot of painting video on doing the Primaris smurf army quickly, and this is probably the best. Two powerful techniques you demonstrated will give best results with least amount of fuss. Starting from a dark to lighter is the trick, but powerful tool.. and dry brushing for quick results. I do the same but instead of dry brushing the blue, I do it with air brushing, not as straight forward as your example, but gives the best blending of colors. Then just finish up with a small amount of edge highlighting with a small dry brush, finishing touches are the guns and badges. good work.

      If you've got paints and brushes already, there's a great little box of three Intercessors that goes at a fraction of the usual price. Could be a fun way to just get your hands on something different to paint, with the bonus that if you want to go crazy with the colour schemes, you don't really have to worry about the rules. :D

      @@SonicSledgehammerStudio Almost, I have brushes and I asked for paints for december.. I've been focusing on terrian so I have lots of hobby paint but only a couple bottles of washes, primer, and varnish for minis until I get to unwrap gifts. =) I think I'll likely get the First Strike set as that's a really good value and then I can rope my hubby into playing with me at some point hopefully. Seems like GW is using that set as a gateway drug. LOL

    Well, I'm currently painting my first minis as Ultramarines and yesterday I've spent a good 40 minutes basecoating one thoroughly so I guess my approach so far hasn't exactly been "speedy" :D
    To be fair I had the paint a bit too thin so I basically coated the entire model twice. I think I'll stick to the method though, I like the blue coverage and then shading down afterwards. Maybe I'll change my mind when I'm done with this first round of models but we'll see ^^
    I think if I continue with the method I might just get Macragge Blue Spray to at least more or less skip the first step.

    If you are not entering your figures into a contest, there is not much point in going crazy with the painting. The whole point is to play the games and have fun. The techniques in this video are more than adequate to get a bunch of figures done quick that look okay, so you can play. I have been playing for a quite awhile. Sure you get better at the painting, but I still don't waste a lot of time on regular troops. get them done and on the table.

    I'm going to be giving painting minis a go with the introduction intercessor kit and I think I'm going to use this style as an inspiration.
    I do have a question though: A lot of other videos have recommended priming with the zenithal highlight, would that even work with the way you went about painting this guy? Initially I would think no but I don't really know anything when it comes to painting so I figured I'd ask.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Given the way this technique works, I doubt it'd make much difference. The zenithal highlighting technique isn't particularly advanced, but it's an extra bit of Fuss that you really don't need to worry about if you're just getting started. On top of which, if you put a lighter shade of primer on the upper edges of the Marine, this 'overbrushing' method won't work as well - those recesses are going to be shining out from under the blue!

      Just watched that upload and it's really cool to see you getting into it and having fun. So begins a long, long habit! I'll admit to being the sort that doesn't really like a lot of battle damage and heavy weathering on Marines - I usually take the idea that mine are just catapulted into battle as and when needed - but I know plenty of folks like the worn look, so I'll see if some tank weathering tricks work on these guys. There's plenty of armour... that ought to work, right?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The easiest way to do it is to paint 'down' into the gap between the bolter and the chest. So rather than trying to approach with your brush from the front, move the model so you're holding it almost as though it's laying down and paint down its front like that. Alternatively, what you can't easily reach with a brush isn't often easily seen once it's on the table, so skip bits!

    What do you think is the equivalent to retributor armour in vallejo paints?

    Macragge Blue spray I think is a better base coat. Quicker to.

    Thanks for the tips, how I’ve tackled the chest eagle is not installing the arms until after I’m done with the eagle. It’s probably some sort of sacrilege doing that but we all have our processes.

    Love these new videos. One thing a lot of people forget is if you super detail your rank and file it doesn't let the leaders, SGT's, LT., CPT., or HQ units progressively stand out the way they should.

      Plus, if you've got a large block of grey plastic to get through, it can be kinda disheartening to see how 'slow' it is to paint everybody to competition standard! It doesn't hurt to knock out the troops. ;D

    Loving your painting videos so far, especially these ones, I'm curious if it would work for other chapters like Dark Angels? (got a bunch I need to get table ready...)

      The Dark Angels colours might be a little dark overall, but I'd try overbrushing Caliban Green, then a very - very! - light drybrush along the edges with something like Niblet Green for the highlighting.
