Just followed this guide to get mine painted up and couldn’t be happier with how it came out. I only started back in the hobby this year and this mini was super daunting. Following the guide worked so well. Cheers!
Aw I’m so glad to hear it helped! Welcome back to the hobby 😊 very glad to have you here and really appreciate the kind donation as well! Any questions or requests, just let us know!
I haven’t painted anything as of yet, new to 40k and have been learning the lore. After watching this I can’t wait to start painting some custodies! Thank you!
Im halfway through this process now, just wanted to thank you for the amazing guidance! Id never have dared Guilliman before seeing this. Ive just finished the filigree and about to do the scary part of flooding all the work with flesh shade. I love the macragge blue contrast so I'm in two minds about the lighter blue, but I bought the paint so might as well go for it. The how to paint faces vid really helped too.
He looks spectacular!! That filigree looks like it could cause some hobby based ptsd lol, that technique on the sword was great too I hope the lion is announced so we can see him join his brother both loyal and traitor im plastic I'm almost excited to see how you'd paint him if he is announced Great video as always Andy :)
Thanks so much! I always try to avoid airbrushes in my tutorials because not everyone can access them, or wants to use them! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Nice. I just undercoated the big G, keen to get going on this. I think i'm just gonna go darker blue than Caledor sky. In any case, great tutorial thanks man!
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, very happy to hear it will help you out! Yeah some people definitely don't go for Caledor Sky but it's an easy switch out for whatever tone you prefer! Let me know how it goes!
Great video, thanks for sharing how you would tackle Guilliman. I also like Caledor Sky as my preferred shade of blue for ultramarines. Nice job on showing an easy way to paint flames too.
im in awe! after watching this tutorial I want to challenge myself and try to paint this mode tool. Thank you so very much Andy for taking time so show us how you painted this beautiful model
That’s exactly why I do these videos-to show people they can paint anything, even the difficult looking ones they’ve been putting off in case they mess them up! Let me know if you have any other questions when you get him!
Oh wow, that was very helpful. I've just received Guilliman through the Imperium subscription and I've been trying to think how best to paint him. This video has helped me greatly and Caledor Sky was one of the first paints I brought when the new range came out but I've hardly used it, pleased to report it's still good, though a little lumpy, but I really like how it helps the model stand out from all the other blue marines in the army. Will certainly consider using it on my own, though I am thinking of getting all that gold and silver out the way first then picking out the blue armour after.
Guilliman is currently buried in my pile of shame. I can't see myself getting to him anytime soon, either. When I do, I'll check back on this video. I'm not sure I'm sold on the caledor sky, it might be a little too light of a blue for my tastes. I'll try it on something small, like some intercessors, first and go from there. Model looks great 👍
Very cool mate...yeah 2 and a half hours for the gold sounds about right...took me around that time as well. Wish I had this tutorial back when I did mine haha. Great job 👍
I am so happy you mentioned the return of the Lion. Now that is offcial that he has returned could you please (asking on bended knee) would you make a step by step color by color in depth start to finish tutorial on how you would paint this model. I hope im not asking too much, but I love your channel and watching you paint. I have learned so much from watching your tutorials. It would be so beneficial to Dark Angel Fanatics and those who are chomping at the bit to get this model and paint it for their own army. Thanks again for your videos and tutorials. Cheers Mate!
The Lion will 100% be making his grand entrance onto the channel as soon as I get my hands on him, don’t worry!! I am DYING to paint him, he is absolutely stunning, not just as a gaming piece but a beautiful model to display as well! And yes I will be making it as simple as possible as well! Thank you also so much for your kind words, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment and I’m so glad to be able to help. More recent models are becoming more and more complicated looking so it’s good to remind people they can achieve great results in a simple way! Thanks again!
I don't! I use the gold straight from the pot and the white that i used here is slightly more watery than GW paint. Please don't ever feel like your questions are stupid, its the best way to learn! I do usually mention if I've mixed paint with water, sometimes I use a wet palette(not for metallics!) but i wouldn't add water unless I mention it in the video. You might need an extra coat of macragge blue if you’re painting over black but yes that will look great! At the end of the day, all that matters is you’re happy with the result!
I was also thinking of applying a full base coat of retributor armour and painting the blue after... i m just a bit afraid that i ll mess it up @@MediocreHobbies

I have a big noob question ( since i m a begginer it does makes sense though ) how do you cover mistakes when you do gold trims ? Since contrast paint acts as an ink and is not opaque, can you undo mistakes by using maccrage blue for example ? Thank you very much
Hey glad the videos are helping! The process of painting this guy is done in a specific way that’s easier to cover up mistakes! You can be messy with the first coat of contrast, more careful with the gold and cover up mistakes when you start working on the blue stages! The gold easily covers the blue contrast, then the next stages of blue will cover the gold well enough. Does that make sense?
@MediocreHobbies thank you for your quick and detailed reply, if i understand well i can cover the gold part mistakes with the Caledor sky blue stage when we paint the flat surfaces ? I m following step by step stages of course so i will cover small gold mistakes at caledor blue stage.
Damn, i bought the starter paint set and it came only with one brush (the pinpoint brush). Is it worth painting the whole thing with just it or should i get a wider brush for basepainting?
you're going to need more than one brush anyway for the hobby, the starter paint set is for basic models and to see if you enjoy the hobby first so it's worth getting more if you're doing a model like this!
