The Best Daily Driver Ever Made?! // 2023 Honda Civic Type R Family Review

- Few cars can do it all like the Honda Civic Type R. Obviously, the Civic Type R is a legend for its performance credentials, but that's not the point of this channel. This channel is about how these cars fit into a real dad and real family's daily life, and to that extent, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R might be perfect. When it's not blasting around racetracks or back roads, the Civic Type R becomes a slightly more intense Honda Civic, itself the best all around car in the class. The fact that the Civic Type R is a hatchback, based on the regular Honda Civic hatch, makes it even more practical and versatile. While we had the Honda Civic Type R, we went grocery shopping, on college visits, and of course had some fun on mountain roads. Over hundreds of miles, the Civic Type R was a willing and able companion as much as it once a barnstorming lunatic. Whereas the Hyundai Kona N and Elantra N are a little more raucous and raw and the Volkswagen Golf R is more... German, the Honda Civic Type R rolls all the best attributes of those cars into one package that is even more capable. Only the Toyota GR Corolla has a similar mix of instanity and usability, but the back seat in the GR Corolla is smaller since it's based on the Corolla hatch, itself different from the Toyota Corolla sedan. At $45k before the inevitable dealer markups, which are growing tiresome for sure, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R represents peak enthusiast family car. As an enthusiast dad, there is no higher praise than this: if I were spending my own money on my own daily driver, the Honda Civic Type R is absolutely the car I would buy. Although I could be swayed to that Acura Integra Type S in candy red with the gold wheels, simply for the looks!

I’m a Dad and have had our FL5 for almost a year. It’s handled everything so well. Other than a few stone chips and some scuffs to the red carpet it’s going great. Never want to sell it.
Nice! Might be the perfect dad car, honestly.
Glad I'm not alone. Dad of 4, oldest 18. Just put my order in at the dealer. 😅 finally back in a jdm after 15 years.
@@josephgaal394 Nice! Love to hear it!
This was an awesome video! Thank you for putting it together. I’m a Dad looking for my fun car and I enjoy seeing the family’s perspectives on the CTR.
Thanks so much! Sounds like it might be the perfect car for you 😉👍🏻
God what a joy to drive something like this around North Georgia... The styling on these have really grown on me, but I'm certainly still more a fan of the 10th Gen's exterior styling for my taste. The 11th Gen's gauge cluster though? That's something else.
Yeah, the current gen Civic makes for a much better interior starting point with a lot higher feeling of quality. I prefer the simplified styling of the 2023 Civic Type R, but the previous Type R didn’t bother me all that much. Now the Integra Type S… that looks fantastic .
@@jax1079that’s why the Si made alot of sense to me when dealers were hoarding and hiking the prices of the Type R up.
It gives me 65% of what the Type R would’ve given me.
I’ve been daily driving a type r since 2019. Great car. Switched to an fl5 this year and I’m more than twice as happy with it compared to the fk8. Great cars
45 yr old Dad here tapping in! Great video by the way!! I have 3 son’s ages 19,17, and 5. I just signed the paperwork for my Championship White CTR yesterday. I found one in Maine of all places for $45,109. Having it shipped next week and it will Arrive just in time for Father’s Day ☺️. My wife’s daily driver is a 2019 Nissan Maxima (paid for) and my daily is a 2018 Honda Accord Sport 2.0t which is also paid for!! I haven’t driven a manual since my days in the Army with the old 5 tons 😂!!
Nice! Congrats! Hope you enjoy many satisfying miles.
Hey I have the accord too! Are you keeping that one?
@@nicholaswilliams6697 yes I’m keeping the Accord. I love that car! It will go down in history as the best Accord and engine combo ever. Fun fact that most people didn’t know about the 2.0t. When you put the car into sport mode it will auto rev match when you get above speeds of 45mph and brake. The car will auto rev match. Now what I’m not sure about is if it was only a 2018 model year thing or did they keep this feature for all Sport 2.0t. Not sure why Honda never included this in there information when advertising the car.
I just traded in my my FK8 for one in boost blue absolutely best decision I ever made the FK8 was a blast but the FL5 is on another level I’d like to see you review an integra type S and see which one you like better
I absolutely want to test the Integra Type S! I’m afraid I’ll probably like it better from a livability standpoint, but it’s really a win-win 😂
What have you managed to do so far in fl5, that you weren't able to do in the fk8?
I'm happy to read a comment like this Im doing my way to one hoperfully soon
@@jax1079the cultclassicness of the Type R is hard to shake off.
If you seat in the TypeS and the seats aren’t it, you’d regret leaving the Type R for it
Damn. That makes me want to switch up, too. Could you please expand on the things that you find thr FL5 to be better at?
They did a fantastic job on cleaning up the body! My 2nd honda since my 04 dx sedan. Lol. Was interested in the 10th gen until I saw the lines on this one. So here is another 40 year old dad getting the 2024 type r for here and there. My daily is a work truck.
Well played 😎
Wanted a daily driver, preferably with hatch, that was fun to drive and ideally could be used for
Autocross or track day. For me the competition was a VW GTI or Golf R (haptics are terrible, shifter rubbery) BMW 3 series (yawn behind the wheel and weird dash) or Porsche Macan (just sits too high). I went with the Type R.
Excellent choice 😉👍🏻
How many miles have you put on it since new?
I actually thought your wife had great feedback, nice to see she was impressed with the boot too even if she didnt want to admit it. Great video 😂
Thanks! I think I'd have an easier time convincing her on the Integra Type S though 😂
I got mine 3 days ago.....amaizing car....!
Lucky duck 🦆
would love to have one. Much prefer this one to the previous gen (basically saying I'm old!). Man... your daughter, although she might not want to hear it, looks exactly like your wife. So it's, Jax, Mrs Jax, and Mini-Ms-Jax !
Haha! This is true. They’re practically twins.
It is perfect dad car ,I'm considering selling g my beloved c63 507 and get a type r
Tough choice, but you might find the Type R more satisfying
@jax1079 it is, but can't go wrong with a stick shift and cheap track days since benz cost 5k after each track day just for maintenance
Really considering trading in my 2.0 accord for the brand new Type R. Would u say it’s good for someone new to manual driving??? It’s always caught my eye but never fully learned how to drive manual yet.
Absolutely! If you’re going to learn to drive a manual better, why not learn on one of the best manual transmissions of all time?! 😉👍🏻
Once you go manual you won't wanna go back to auto. Auto is boring.
Think 🤔 about this for a Sec - Sh-awD typeR or Integra typeS?!? ☝🏿 now think about Sh-awD jus got an update or revision…I can See honda/acura tuning it for the typeR n typeS differently jus like the difference between their all-wheel Drive system in pilot vs mdx . But it should be one System for both with adjustability for both
I think we’re all secretly hoping for something like that, but I’m not sure it’s in the cards.
Integra type s is more my style. Its a CTR in a button up shirt
Then you're going to like an upcoming review... :-)
Got mines last year at 9k mark up and I still don’t regret it!!! I love it more each time I drive it
Nice! That’s quite the endorsement! 👍🏻
The truth that most TH-camrs hide from folks so they don’t get lambasted
Uh… I definitely know what I’d chose.
Is it roomy? Wife no it is not. Husband defense mode how about those seats lol
She’s definitely playing prevent defense in this video 😂
“Let him buy”??? Man. No way I’m not buying this car.
Very sad
Who can afford this thing?
People who make money.
My God. Karen was a whiner.
I bet you get all the ladies.
Lol there is no way I want to drive a car with that wing with family. It is a great vehicle for a young person 🤣
Hahaha! I have a surplus of self esteem. Embrace the wing. You know you want to… 😂
Spoiler
You’re family must really be fun and cool to be around then
@@jax1079haha. My only issue is the wing isn’t big enough 😅
@@washout04 There's always room for more wing.

You did absolutely nothing to convince the wife, but made me want it even more now...
That’s what I’m here for 😂
Mrs is clearly not a sports-car person 😆I can relate... BUT my missus loves "Honda" and "VTEC" + the big boot... so looks like I might get this one over the line personally!!
My only thing is the red seats... Personally hate them - and wish I could get black with red stitching or something less intense!
I can understand that. You can have any color... as long as it's red. :-)
It took years, YEARS!! for me to be able to comment how much I like a car I would see in front of the President and CEO of Domestics Incorporated. Without her almost immediately going into the reasons I will not be owning one. After 30 years she now enjoys talking with me about them.
Haha! Well I pay her back with unlimited Amazon boxes at our front door, so it works both ways...

Great video man! I love the Type R. 👌
Would love to drive one someday!
Thanks, man! One of the few machines that truly lives up to the hype and then some.
You sure? It’s not a Toyota!
@@commonduck10 haha I know I know… but it’s still coming from a reputable Japanese manufacturer! 👌
You have to ask for permission? Something is wrong here.
Wow, you’re so alpha. Teach me how to be more alpha like you.
@@jax1079 she kind of treated you poorly there, just an observation….
This dude LOVES his daughter. Very wholesome.
Uhh hell yes I want one!!👍 in
championship white…. Dad here checking in awesome vid loved the detail and passion behind it. I also have kids one has her own car she’s a teenager going to college soon. Last 2 will fit just fine when the time comes. Rooting for you if you’re trying to get one of your own!! GL! Subscribed
Thanks so much! Welcome to the channel!
Just bought an FL5. This is my exact use case, do everything dad car. Even my wife, who did not like my 10th Gen Civic Si, likes the Type R.
Nice! Love to hear it!
Excellent video, really covered the "living with it" element that so many tubers just gloss over or ignore altogether. Could do without the passenger histrionics though 🤪
Haha! Comes with the territory when you're the lone enthusiast in the household! 🤣
What's a sporty mix sports car? Her energy was so intense and aggressive... She literally gave me anxiety. I had to turn it off
A bit sensitive, are we? Davey Boy?
@@jax1079 I don't think it's right to try and insult your viewers. Better not to reply then call me a little girl. Anyway I'm no more sensitive than the next guy... Her energy was just manic, contentious, and just unrelenting. Anyway I just realized she's your wife, and you have to live with it. I take back my comment. Good luck, really
@@Daveyboy_GolfR So let me get this straight: you say something unkind, I respond that you're sensitive (never said you were "a girl"), and then you respond by being overly sensitive AND insulting? And somehow this is MY fault...?
@@jax1079 I wasn't trying to be unkind, I was being honest. I didn't know she was your wife when I said it. It was way too much... Way way way way way too much and it caused me to not subscribe. You were fine, actually very articulate. She was a nightmare
@@Daveyboy_GolfR I just think your premise is hilarious: "I wasn't trying to be unkind... But your wife is a nightmare." I bet you're a real hit with the ladies.
It would be nice if it didn't look like a station wagon, I like they old designs.
What station wagons have you been hanging out with…?
The best part of the video was when the wife left the video HEHE
I bet you get all the ladies
Dad car, dad review and dad body, what else can you ask for.. lol
Yikes! Time to hit the gym, I guess… 😂
You don’t know about the original type r?
Integra type s?
Yes…?
Is it worth with a mark up? That Is the real question, because you can't get it otherwise. And if so, how much of a markup would you pay?
Sadly, this is an excellent question. I’d say I’d entertain a few thousand, maybe as much as $5k, but I would bend over backwards and go anywhere to avoid a markup just on general principle. I’m so over the practice.
@@jax1079Can’t Honda or the government do something against the unabated price hike ?
Great video!! Great family. Your wife and you are very entertaining.
Thanks so much!
Honda went and made the best car.
Sure did, but I'd take the Integra Type S, I think
@@jax1079 Both rule

Your wife had me dying 200mph! 😆
To be fair, she treats 45mph like 200mph 😂
better than a 2023 BMW 330i?
More satisfying
Maybe a 340i M-sport might be it
Best daily is a tesla. Most fun daily is ctr. Use logic, not emotions fanboys.😂
… says a fanboy…? 🤔
@jax1079 yeh I'm calling out my fellow fanboys. I love the ctr but it's not the best daily, that's just reaching.
@@XOX-fs4ww Best daily for an enthusiast is my point. I don’t disagree with you, but I’d take an Ioniq5 or Ioniq6 over a Model 3 currently.
It isn’t the circuit GR Corolla?
