MG 1100 No. 64. Year of production 1967. Matchbox renovation. Diecast model.

The Lesney factory produced the LG 1100 from 1966 to 1970. The last year of production was the super fast series model in blue. My car dates back to 1967 and was complete but very damaged. The biggest difficulty was repairing the windshield, because in addition to deep scratches, it was painted. Nice job and well done . That brought back some memories, when I was a kid my Dad had an MG 1100 , two tone paint , British Racing Green on top , a thin chrome strip divider and cream on the bottom , of course the MG grille , wire wheels ,walnut dash and tan leather seats and I THINK there was a a small fold down tray on the back of the front seats for use by the rear passengers . I wish I had it now !

Super restoration. Such a contrast with the finished result from what you started with. Smooth, glossy paint. This casting is full of character, with the driver and Corgi dog included. Not sure about the towbar Matchbox included. In real life, the 1100cc 4 cylinder would struggle to haul a trailer up a steep grade.

Very nice one. I had that Matchbox car back when I was 5 years old in 1970. I remember it well because I liked the dog in the back seat! But I think it was just a tad darker green...

Paul, nice job overall, but these are the things my brain screamed as I watched. Don't use brake fluid or any other chemicals over the top of your painted car. In fact, don't work over the top of a finished piece. It's nice to see it, but damaging fresh paint is very easy to do and dropping a drill on top of the model will add new repairs to what you are doing. At the very least you should use the chrome pen before reassembling the model, no chance of getting it on the fresh paint that way. In this car I would have polished the metal and clear coated it instead of using the pen. Tap for the screw before painting and put the screw in so it will be painted like the original rivet surface. The original axles for this model appeared to be in good shape and were long enough to use your method to secure the wheels, it would seem to be preferable to retain the originals when possible. Last one is really more of a personal preference, I would polish the entire clear piece regardless whether it is easily visible or not.

I'd have done the polish and clear coat method too. Maybe the sharpie for the door handles and red and orange details for the tail lights etc.. I'd have detailed the black and silver period number plate too - as the reg' is visible.

I have found so many of these and corgi models while clearing out one of our unused rooms. Some look new, some my brother, when he was young obviously played with crashing them together. We must be sitting on a little goldmine!!! Thanks for showing what is possible given skills and patience.

My father had an actual one of these cars, also in green (and a few more ADO16 variants after it as well). Love it! I also had this model as a child (remember the dog in the back). Maybe not how the original model was released, but I would have chrome painted the side strips and also painted in the tail lamp clusters in red

A fairly easy resto for you.I was cringing when Isaw you clean other parts with the brake fluid over your freshly painted body. The poor dog must have caught his snout on the window frame. A shiny final result.

Excellent. Liked the way you restored the glazing, filing and paste. I would not have 'silvered' the grill and bumpers unless it was originally done that way. But, you could have done it before assembly. Loved that box you made, you're the only one I've seen do that.

I don't know what the hell Lesney was thinking when they made this casting. I have done two of these and both of them had the base plate snap off behind the rear wheels. It's like it was made out of diecast paper or something. Anyway... this looks great. Nice job my friend :)

I have seen that too. I'm lucky enough my MG base is ok. On many other castings, there is often a reinforcing made to later production models, so Matchbox must have spotted a weakness. But not this one.

@@railtrolley The first one I did snapped off and I didn't notiice it till I was cleaning it. Never found the piece. had to reasemb;e it without a rear piece. It looks ok though

@@2ahdcat Sympathy for you, mate. I've just looked at mine, and if the rear baseplate is snapped off, do you lose the rear bumper as well? Very difficult, if not impossible to fix. I wonder if a batch of baseplates was cast and the metal was not as pure as it should have been. There is some very early Dinky aircraft and boat models, which are just dissolving. Impure batch of casting metal called Zinc Pest. Something I have seen elsewhere on the 'net about it.

You've done a great job here, chum. Speaking as one who grew up with these Matchbox (etc) cars and only sold them off a few years back, I have yet to see a single renovation of this type (of very many from many renovators) on which the paint looks anywhere near right. Everyone that is, not picking on you here. Someone who really knows about the paints used in such manufacture could find a profitable gap in the market and many happy renovators if they could crack it. Is it a lead thing I wonder.
